Superior Saturday (The Keys to the Kingdom)

Our Price: £2.99
Used Price: £4.45
New Price: £1.99

Review for Superior Saturday (The Keys to the Kingdom):
Worth buying
Superior Saturday is the sixth in Garth Nix's"Keys to the Kingdom" series, so I had high expectations for it. However, whilst certainly a good book, it was perhaps a slight let down after the brilliance of the other five. As Superior Saturday as been made to seem the all-powerful enemy in the previous novels, her defeat seemed a little too easy and less dramatic than expected. The plot followed the same line as the other five, which, although undoubtedly good, has become just a little repetitive: retrieve part of the Will of the Architect, defeat the Trustee and gain the Key, and so lacked a little novelty, apart from the cliffhanger ending that, admittedly, really made me want to know what happened. Another interesting development is that Arthur finally becomes more immortal than mortal and starts struggling with thoughts of superiority, which added a new level to the story and will probably have even greater implications in the final installment. I would recommend this book to bookworms aged about eleven and above who enjoyed the other"Keys to the Kingdom" books.

Review for Twilight (Twilight Saga):
One of the Best Books I've ever read!
I totally, completely recommend this book to you, if you are into fantasies, teen romance and drama this book is definately for you.

I have already read all of the books so far in the sequel and i was hooked from the first time Edward appears in the book, I love the fact that it wasn't just about vampires but about the difficulty between Edward and Bella in their relationship.

I wish Edward was a real person! & that he loved me as much as Bella! :)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) [Children's Edition] (Harry Potter)

Our Price: £4.49
Used Price: £2.72
New Price: £3.40

Review for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Book 7) [Children's Edition] (Harry Potter):
Best ever.
I am a very well read 16 year old (I've read everything from Ian McEwan to Jane Austen) and I am completly in love with this series. I've been reading them since I was 8 and this is the best one (followed by the 5th). It's so exciting and so much is cleared up but it also leaves some things open for discussion. It's great for escaping into! It's sad and happy at the same time time and when I finished it I put it down cried for about 20 mins (just cause the series was over!) then picked it straight back up and re-read it! I've read the whole series at least 10 times and i can't find anyway to fault it. Buy it now!! It's the best book ever!

New Moon (Twilight Saga)

Our Price: £3.99
Used Price: £3.04
New Price: £3.09

Review for New Moon (Twilight Saga):
Better than TWILIGHT but not particularly great
This was a slightly more interesting read that TWILIGHT because:

1. Edward is away for most of the book;

2. there's more action; and

3. the pacing is better.

The scenes between Jacob and Bella had a nice, natural feel to them and whilst there is some repetition in their conversations, it's not as obvious as in TWILIGHT. Meyers' werewolf mythology isn't particularly original, but the transformation scenes are nicely handled, as are the reactions of those forced to undergo it. Jacob is more likeable than Edward - taking Bella's wishes into account, and emotionally perceptive but I disliked what he becomes at the end, albeit there is context for it. Meyers makes the contrast between Jacob and Edward obvious as Jacob's skin is unnaturally warm and the repetition becomes boring.

Self-obsessed, shallow and in many ways wilfully dense, Bella's self-indulgence irritated me. Meyers continually refers to the"hole" created by Edward's departure and Bella wallows in it and is allowed to wallow in it by all around her. Some will find that romantic and believable, but I didn't. Her attitude towards vampirism disturbs me. She never considers the consequences for her parents and other people who love her and her motivation appears to be her fear that she will age when Edward does not. By reducing a potentially interesting theme to such a shallow perspective, Meyers robs it of resonance.

Everything that Edward does in the book is for him, not Bella and Bella's failure to challenge him reduces her character further. In one scene the lovers are reunited whilst the Volturi feast on a load of tourists. That Bella asks if it's bad for her to feel so happy when she's just heard the victims' terrified screams tells you everything about the couple. Alice is a nice counterfoil to Edward (and I enjoyed the greater role she played in the book), but it's not enough to mitigate his character.

The book constantly alludes to Romeo and Juliet. Obvious and heavy handed, it becomes tortuous in a scene where Bella compares Jacob to Paris, because that play is not about a love triangle in the way that this series seems to be. However, the end of the book sets a conundrum for the lovers regarding whether and when Bella will be transformed and the triangle element represented by Jacob posing an interesting wrinkle.

Once Upon a Time in the North

Our Price: £4.94
Used Price: £5.01
New Price: £3.84

Review for Once Upon a Time in the North:
Not what I hoped
It's too short.
It doesn't tell you much more about the dark materials universe.
It's just a straight forward story the two main characters meet and sort out a problem and that's it.
You get a bit more of an insight into Lee Scoresby the aeronaut but nothing of Iorek Byrnison which would have made the book far more interesting.
If you want a really good Pullman adventure story read the Sally Lockhart books first.
The game at the back is good fun but I didn't get the book for that.

The Gruffalo

Review for The Gruffalo:
An enduring favourite
Long after having bought this book it is still a firm favourite with my children. The story, which is told in rhyme, has a nicely rhythmic quality that gives the book an almost soothing feel. The illustrations by Alex Scheffler are first class and look bold and colourful. I have yet to see a Donaldson/Scheffler book that either I or my kids haven't liked.

Room on the Broom

New Price: £1.99

Review for Room on the Broom:
Buzz off thats MY witch !!!
Simply fantastic.

The rhyming scheme is fantastic and the characters likeable. Even tho the witch is 'ugly' and has a big wart on her nose, she is kind and helps people and ISN'T scary.

A very funny story, with great rhymes and moral messages but without being preachy- so they just absorb my osmosis that if you do good things for your friends and dont judge them on how they look, then they will do good things for you in return.

The highlight tho is my 3 year old and I booming out together"BUZZ OFF- THATS *MY* WITCH" at the dragon. Even funnier was when he reused it when his friend tried to take one of his cars !! Ha ha

Buy it, you wont regret it

The Night Pirates

Our Price: £3.59
Used Price: £1.96
New Price: £1.74

Review for The Night Pirates:
absolutely captivating
This is one of my and my 4 year old son's favourite books. It tells the fantastic story of Tom and a team of girl pirates who steal the front of Tom's house and use it to disguise their ship so they can steal treasure from Captain Patch and his grown up pirates.

What sets this book apart is the wonderful illustrations and the text which not only has a gentle rhyme and repetition but flows across the page using different fonts and layouts to help tell the story. for instance when the pirates run away, so do the letters.....

This book will be treasured by any boy or girl and it is particularly refreshing to find a story about girls who are not pink princessese. Buy this book - you will not be disappointed!

This was an instant hit with my toddler, who was entranced by the rhymes and learned the word snail within a single read. I found myself quite moved when reading it too, especially when the snail feels small in the big beautiful world.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book]

Review for The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book]:
Cut price, cut size!
My wife works as a nursery manager, so she recommended this nook for our 19 month old daughter. Babies and toddlers are supposed to be able to put their fingers through the holes in the pages like a wiggly caterpillar poking through an apple, but not only have they cut the price, they have also cut the size down to a miserly 18cm x 12cm.

I returned the book to Amazon and have ordered a 29cm x 20cm version elsewhere.

Review for The Spook's Mistake (Wardstone Chronicles):
Already waiting for the next Spook book
Never fails to amaze me how good this series is. Every book so far has had me wanting to read it in one go.
This will appeal to all age groups and I could not praise it enough. I like the fact that the books are a good size (always leaving you wanting more) and have stuck on a good price and not become too expensive.
Meet the authour recently and he hopes to be doing about 8 or 9 books overall. Cant wait. And will be interesting to see what the film will be like.
