New Price: £73.87

Review for Fujifilm FinePix AX280 Digital Camera - Black (14MP, 5x Optical Zoom) 3 inch LCD:
Not built to last
Firstly the positives. The camera doesn't take all that long to boot up, it has a wide variety of shooting modes, it produces high quality images, even at 5x zoom it can be used hand held to produce decent images, alkali or rechargeable both batteries seem to last forever.

Now the negatives which is unfortunately much longer. After booting up if left in auto mode it often picks the wrong shooting mode (eg Macro for Landscape shots) leading to ages trying to focus before giving up and taking a fairly poor photograph, this doesn't happen all the time but when it does is irritating, but can be fixed by leaving the camera in the mode next likely to be used. The video files are HUGE, but the auto focus is so poor during filming it the quality can't be seen during playback. Low light or far zoom pictures can look grainy.

Now for the reason for the two star review: Mine broke. It was outdoors in the dry in the operating range stated in the manual and the camera switched off without retracting the lens. Assuming it was the batteries and a very poor system for handing running out of power a fresh set of AAs from my pocket were used. But to no effect, the camera wouldn't respond. It was possible to eventually retract it after I got it home after many attempts, but the opportunity for taking my own photos was gone.

If it had lasted I would have given at least a 3 if not 4 for this camera as the price is certainly good enough to overlook a lot of its shortcomings.

Fujifilm Finepix F70EXR Digital Camera - Gun Metal (10MP, 10x Zoom) 2.7'' LCD

Review for Fujifilm Finepix F70EXR Digital Camera - Gun Metal (10MP, 10x Zoom) 2.7'' LCD:
Fuji Finepix F70 EXR - First Impression
Bought this camera after reading all the good reviews on the Internet. Found the out of the box settings did not give good results and I am still experimenting with modes/setting in an attempt to improve indoor image quality. I am a little disappointment with the Fuji Finepix F70EXR, as was expected an easy to use point and shoot camera, not one I would have to spend weeks trying to reduce noise issues on indoor images. On the plus side, I have had some good results using the zoom outdoors and the camera is very compact.Battery life is good.
I previously have had a Canon Ixus 400 and Canon Ixus 950IS, both of which gave some superb results indoors and outdoors before failing through punishing use. Both cameras were very easy to use compared to the F70EXR. I'm beginning to wonder if I should have bought another Canon Ixus?
Anyway, I'm going to keep persevering with the F70EXR's modes/settings and who knows, may just get the results I'm looking for.

New Price: £279.99

Review for Canon PowerShot SX20 IS Digital Camera (12.1 Megapixel, 20x Optical Zoom) 2.5 inch LCD:
Fabulous!
I love this camera. I've had SLRs, digital cameras, video cameras, etc for years. This is the best. It's not as good as a top end DSLR, but you don't have the hassle and the results are brilliant. You have full control or you can point and shoot. The HD video is superb and it's there at your whim. You can even take a snapshot in the middle of a video. It feels very solid so it's easy to keep steady. One con is that there are so many features it makes the menus a bit busy. However, brilliant, buy one!

Review for Panasonic FZ38 Digital Camera +4GB +Soft Case Bundle (Lumix DMC-FZ38 Black, 12MP 18xOptical Zoom 27mm Wide-Angle 2.7" LCD, Power OIS):
Good camera, shame about the memory card
I bought this camera because I wanted something slightly better than the standard"point and shoot" cameras, but I didn't want the hassle, expense, and weight of a Digital SLR. I'm not a serious photographer, but this camera seems very good - it does everything I want it to do, and there are still lots of features that I don't yet know how to use, which I shall explore more fully in due course. The build quality seems good - very sturdy. It's also nice to look at, and easy to hold - not as bulky as SLRs. The most impressive feature of this camera is the zoom - 18x, and it still takes good pictures at high zoom levels (assuming you hold the camera steady). The photos I've taken with it so far are quite nice - I think if I were a good photographer I could take some really good ones with this camera.

The software that comes with it is adequate, although could be improved, doesn't let you control the camera from the computer, or delete photos on the camera from the computer. Apart from that though, it will do all the normal things you would expect of camera software.

The case is fine - fits the camera in it with space for some other accesories (like a computer cable etc)

The only real disappointment was the memory card supplied with the camera. I didn't realise this, but there are different classes of memory card (something to do with the speed at which they process data I think). Anyway, the one supplied was 4GB, but was too slow to be usable. When trying to view photos using the camera, it took ages to switch between photos, and zoom in / out etc. To start with I thought it was the camera, but when I bought a faster (8GB) memory card, everything was much faster, and the video recording function (which wasn't working properly with the 4GB card) worked fine.

Olympus E-PL1 Compact System Camera - Black (14-42mm Black Lens Kit)

New Price: £434.50

Review for Olympus E-PL1 Compact System Camera - Black (14-42mm Black Lens Kit):
Great camera for P&S upgrader or photographic nut
I,m the photographic nut and wanted max IQ in a small package inc the tiny Olympus lenses, first trip was a Bon Jovi concert indoors in low light and the camera focused with no problems and gave me great high ISO results.
The controls could do with a few more things such as a control wheel and a extra button for something dedicated.
There is more controls in the menu,s then you will need but it,s all there if needed .
Jpegs out of the camera are the best iv,e seen and the VF-2 is amazing as a option ,almost like having a Full frame finder it,s so clear and bright.
So if you want a small camera with mid level DSLR IQ , fairly good allround speed and the ability to blag your way into a Bon Jovi concert where DSLR,s are not allowed then the EPL-1 is for you.

Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)

Our Price: £1,163.96
New Price: £1,147.99

Review for Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Great electronics, poor ergonomics
I've just replaced my trusty Canon 40D. The choice wasn't easy, as Canon have not continued the XXD series directly. The 50D is now two years old. Instead of a 60D, last year Canon introduced the 7D. This is more like a cross between the 40D and the 5D MkII, and is rather more expensive, but at least it's compatible with my ES-F lenses, so after some umming and ahhing that's what I decided upon.

Now before I get to the negative bit, let's acknowledge that the 7D is a very good camera. It does well all the things that other Canons do well, and I have great hopes for the advanced auto-focus, although I haven't yet found anything to really test that. I also really like the built-in level and composition grid, and the much-improved live view features.

Low light performance of the new cameras is very good, although the improvement is marginal over the 40D in the crucial (for me) 1600-3200 ISO range. If you want to see what I mean, have a look at the full version of this review on my website.

ISO 1600 shots will clean up well, and should make a decent print, the ISO 3200 shot is marginal, and will take some juggling to get a good balance between noise and sharpness. 7D shots at ISOs 6400 and 12800 will never be portfolio quality.

The 7D produces good pictures. Its offences are against ergonomics and design purity.

First up, weight. The dimensions of the 40D and 7D are almost identical. However, it weighs a whopping 80g more. That's all but 3oz in old money, or a more than 10% increase. Obviously my previous entreaties to Canon to"just add lightness" haven't yet borne fruit. There's no good explanation for the increase. Weather sealing has allegedly been improved, but rubber isn't very heavy. Maybe there's a lead weight (or, marginally more realistically, a tube of mercury) swinging around for the level? Whatever the cause, I predict a number of 7D owners becoming tired either directly of the weight, or the blurry images to which it may well lead.

Then there are several completely superflous controls, most of which just get in the way. My bète noir is the rear control dial lock switch. What's the point of this? If you're such a klutz you can't pick up a camera without randomly twiddling the controls then maybe a high-end Canon isn't for you. And why just lock the RCD and no other controls? It doesn't even lock the RCD fully - the latter can still be used in the menus. Instead it's a needless point of failure - my first 7D had to be returned because this switch had failed, and I have seen several similar cases on the web.

Next, the"multi-function button", and auto-focus control. Functions carried across from the XXD series have a delightfully consistent logic: press a single button, and then the front control dial sets one aspect, while the RCD sets the other. For example, exposure compensation and bracketing. In most other Canons, AF is similar. Not the 7D. First you press the AF select button as before, then you have to press this fiddly new button next to the shutter release to cycle through the AF modes, and finally you can select an AF zone or point with the RCD. Why not just cycle the AF mode with the front dial, and the detail with the RCD?

The"multi-function button" isn't well named, as by default it only perform this function and flash exposure lock. However you can, if you ferret around in the custom function menus, assign a much more useful function - triggering the viewfinder display of the level and composition grid. This excellent capability really needs to be enabled by default - why not on the wastebasket button, which falls naturally under the left thumb and otherwise has no function when shooting?

The idea of being able to re-assign some buttons is a good one, but very strangely and half-heartedly implemented. For example, I'm never going to use RAW+JPEG button, because I always shoot with that combination anyway. Why can't I assign this to something useful, like mirror lock-up? Yet I can re-assign the shutter half-press to another function (from the absolute SLR standard of"focus and meter"), which would be a remarkably contrary thing to do.

Finally, what's with the"reprofiled grip"? I don't know who Canon reprofiled it for, but it's certainly not men with average sized hands, who now find a painful ridge under the thumb pad where the 40D was fine. At least one 7D is going to have to be modified with rubber tape, and that's not good.

So sorry Canon, I can only give the 7D 7/10, and I wanted to love it like its predecessor. You've got the electronics right, now focus on a more consistent, streamlined and comfortable user experience. You know how to do this - just look at the 40D.
