FAQ: Is a 12MP or 14MP or 16MP compact digital camera better than 10MP one?

Not really. The size of compact digital camera limits the size of its image sensor which in turn limit the amount of light available to produce the image. Basically the sensor divides the available light into pixels, so more pixels means lesser light for each individual pixel. You can imagine that a decent picture need decent pixels and decent pixels need decent amount of light. The consensus among expert photographers is that 6MP to 10MP is a good compromise for compact pocket-size digital cameras. Beyond this point, the picture quality might actually degrade, especially under low light conditions. Of course bigger cameras (like a digital SLR or a super zoom bridge camera) can accommodate bigger sensors hence they can accommodate more pixels too, so 20MP or 30MP can also be found in professional cameras.
