Excellent camera

I bought this to replace my Fujifilm S2 Pro DSLR camera. Because it was 10.2 megapixels compared to the Fuji's 6.1 megapixels I'd expected the D60 images to be much better. In fact not much to choose between them - Fuji's are a little sharper and less noisy but D60's have very slightly more resolving power.

However this varies sometimes from photo to photo and even after very close looking the image quality differences are very small.

I also bought a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens.

Pros and cons of my new camera outfit:

* Slightly More detail
* larger image - better quality poster prints
* Vibration reduction ( on the 18-200mm lens )
* Massive zoom range on the 18-200 lens
* Slightly lighter and smaller than Fuji - less arm ache!
* Much quicker download of images
* I shoot in RAW format and find Nikon Capture NX2 software ( bought separately ) much more comprehensive than Fuji's version
* Much bigger and clearer screen - easier to see when shots out of focus
* More image info displayed
* Electronic remote ( buy separately ) operates from a longer distance
* Viewfinder seems a little brighter

cons

* Actual image quality no better - possibly very slightly worse depending on the photo
* No AF support for older lense
* LCD screen and easy change of some shot settings
* 18-200mm lense is soft in the corners at 200mm and widest aperture - better when stopped down 2 stops

You can see the pros outweight the cons so I'm happy!

From the reviews I've seen the Canon 450D has better image sharpness - but also more expensive. As I have a few Nikon lenses it'd be expensive to switch to Canon for the sake of a small image improvement.

Perfect camera

I'm a professional photographer shooting Nikon and I bought this for my parents as a present. Having played with it myself now for a few weeks, I can say it's a stunning camera with amazing features and very easy to use and to get fabulous results.

Given I'm a pro, I'm amazed with the S6 - Nikon have done a superb job and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Amazon have the cheapest price too for it.

Fair weather friend

Soft dull images at all settings, except at max zoom, compared to several similar cameras. After a gloomy week it performed much better in perfect overhead sunlight but that was the least one could expect. Add two more stars.
Nothing seems to match the sharp clear shots of my old but slow Coolpix 3100.
Coolpix L11 captures squirrels under trees better (chuckle). Fuji S6500fd quite nice with care. Nikon D50 handles all things exposure related much better - an unfair comparison but highlights the small sensor/many megapixels malarky.
The dodgy march of technology in small cameras? The megapixel proliferation contest? Surely this can't be Gordon's fault as well?

Boxed with French, no SD card

Just repacked it. Looks good, just. User manual is in French, the waranty from Neitherlands (but i hope it works in world wide).

A hassle-free way into digital...

I've had my D200 for 4 months. It seems longer because I've taken so many pix with it. It's my first DSLR, and I wasn't even sure I wanted the hassle of learning a whole new photographic discipline. After a couple of days, I stopped worrying. The camera, though complex, is intuitive in use. I've developed simple procedures for getting the pictures I want (which leaves many of the camera's features unused), and I'm gobsmacked by the results. It's given me a renewed interest in both photography and landscape. The only negative aspect is flare when shooting into the sun, but I'm learning how to control that too. I hope the D200 will last me for many years (I've only owned three cameras in about 30 years). I'd recommend the camera to any 'thinking' photographer; for once I made the right decision...

Nice photos, shame about the design flaw...

Like the title says, this camera takes great photos and I really liked it, but there seems to be a design flaw with the battery compartment. The springs in it are strong and force the batteries upwards against the cover, and in time this broke the cover off, cracking the camera body and rendering it unusable without using gaffa tape. Shame really as I did like it.

Customer Care Problems

First of all, I do not want to confuse any of you. But I want to add a small note.
The day after my D80 arrived (from amazon)... I took my first pictures. Just for a test. While I was browsing through them, I have noticed that black spot in all of the pictures.

This case is known as"dust in the low-pass filter". I am quite familiar with the problem. Was that a manifacturing error... or was I unlucky enough to get that single piece of dust inside my camera while I was mounting my lens (very carefully). I do not really know. The thing I know is that just after one day... I was in trouble...

There are two Nikon shops in the town. Both of them refused to apply the simple"Removing the dust from the low-pass filter" procedure listed in the manuel.

One of the shops said that they can send my camera to Nikon. This takes 4-5 weeks.
The shop said that they can send the camera to Nikon, it will take 4-5 weeks... and they charge me 100£ for this procedure (It sounded like the guy was trying to punish me for buying the Nikon D80 through Amazon, but not from his shop).

However I was lucky enough and the shop that rejected to help me the first time, noticed how desperate I was... and decided to help me... They applied the simple dust removal procedure as described in the manuel... and they saved me money and weeks...
But this has nothing to do with Nikon... It was my personal victory.

The result: Nikon has a terrible customer care policy. Once you buy their product... You are on your own. It takes weeks and money... Next time I will think twice before buying a Nikon.

Amazon simply asks you to first try going through the procedures of the manifacturer (I have already mentioned those procedures) and then... they probably will replace the product.

I have to say again: This is just my personal experience... But I was not happy with this entire mess. Especially with the customer care procedures of Nikon. I almost ended up paying extra 100£ and loosing my camera for 5 weeks.

After sales service

Camera received with information only in French. Emails to Amazon were passed on to Pixmania who referred me back to Amazon. Only help offered was a refund. Nobody bothered to explained that I could download the relavant information from a Nikon website.
