not what you expect

when i first bought this dvd game, i was expecting to be entertained for days on end. imagine my disappiontment when i only played it once before consigning it to oblivion in my dvd collection. don,t get me wrong, its a brilliant enough game and the concept is good too, but after playing it once it keeps repeating the same questions over and over again. once you have answered 5 questions correctly, you have to move on to another catorgory and can,t choose the same one until you start another game and then it justasks you the same questions. there is also no option to just work your way through the catogories testing your knowledge, you have to play some stupid game, answering questions to get home, which gets a bit tedious after a while. all in all, a very big disappointment

Great game for all the celeb gossip

This game is great fun. You get to see all sorts of celeb pics and videos that you might not have seen before and answer loads of different sorts of questions. It fab for anyone who loves a bit of celebrity gossip and a glimpse of all the famous people when they are caught off guard... I highly recommend it.

This is a great dvd game. It has loads of clips from the past and newer ones too, so everyone in my family was happy remembering them. A really good quiz. They should bring TOTP back.

Not perfect, but a reasonable DVD quiz for 'Carry On' fans

I have been a lifelong 'Carry On' fan (even thought I wasn't born until the year of the series' swansong, 'Carry On Emmanuel', in 1978). From the gentle early entries, to the very saucy later ones, I love them all. So when I saw the interactive DVD 'Carry On Quizzing', I quickly snapped it up, for the family (all 'Carry On' lovers) to play at Christmas.

The proceedings are hosted by Richard O'Brien, best known for 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' and 'The Crystal Maze', who is also a 'Carry On' enthusiast (and also had a very small, uncredited role in 1965's 'Carry On Cowboy'). I couldn't make up my mind about the choice of Richard O'Brien to host the quiz. I don't dislike him, but I found him a bit hard to warm to here. He spends most of the time impersonating Kenneth Williams, to varying success. I would have preferred to have seen one of the actual 'Carry On' stars at the helm, but sadly, most of them have now passed away. Even so, surely one of the surviving secondary performers could have been used.

As for the quiz itself... You can play as a single player, or against others / as teams, with up to four teams allowed (each given a different name relating to various things from the films).

Rounds are made up of questions randomly picked from such categories as 'Carry On Guessing' (a straightforward question), 'Carry On Watching' (a question related to a clip), 'ohhh Matron' (a quote question), 'Have A Butchers' (a picture question), and 'quite an earful' (an audio clip question). Each question has four choices of answers, and you select your answer by pressing the corresponding arrow key on the DVD remote.

I found that there were a good mix of questions and categories; the only gripe that I have is that some of the questions seemed rather obscure - and that's coming from a lifelong 'Carry On' fan. For pure example, one of the questions that came up during my first play, was about an actor from one of the films, and the title of the 'Doctor Who' story that he also appeared in. Surely this would have been more at home in a 'Doctor Who' quiz than a 'Carry On' one! If the general answer had been 'Doctor Who' it would have been reasonable, but asking for the exact story title (considering that the original 'Doctor Who' ran for 26 years), I found a little too specific - and bearing in mind I am a 'Doctor Who' fan as well as a 'Carry On' one. That's just one random example of more than a couple of niggley questions I came across.

The multiple player option has a rather questionable system of play, as it asks the same question for each team. This means that, to avoid the following team scoring points off of your answer, you have to press the answer without saying it out loud before passing the DVD remote onto the next team. Especially as the game suggests that you play as teams, this means that you have little option to discuss the answer out loud with your team-mates. It would have been better, in my opinion, to ask a different question to each team.
Of course, this system does mean that you can cheat slightly, by playing the multiple player game on your own, giving you up to four chances to answer the question correctly (and as each question has four possible answers, you're bound to get the right one eventually!).

At the end of each round, you are given a total of the points you have scored. The higher you have scored, the further along the 'Hall of Fame' you progress. You get a different picture from this hall the further you progress; although I couldn't quite work out how the pictures were chosen, as the low ones, where you have only scored a couple of points, are obvious pictures, of Kenneth Williams, Hatty Jacques, etc., whereas the pictures further along are a little more obscure.

For all I've said against it, 'Carry On Quizzing' is an enjoyable little game. If nothing else, you get a nice selection of classic clips. I just feel there is the odd kink that could do with ironing out. Maybe we should hope for a second edition that will address these niggles.
If I had paid full price for it, I would probably have been a bit disappointed, but thanks to reductions on sites like Amazon.co.uk, it makes a fun and entertaining - if not quite perfect - quiz for 'Carry On' fans.

UMMM

Well when I bought this I thought it would be a combination of cardio and toning, and then when Nikki said you need to include Cardio, i realised I wasted money.
I do Cardio, but I haven't really got a workoug that combines cardio and toning in the same time otherwise I have to do two different workouts.
Instead I decided to do eithere 1 section 10-15 mins long or 2 sections 20-30mins a day instead and then changing the levels so i didn't get bored and worked out all different muscles...

If your not ready to tone up yet, and you need to do Cardio avoide for now, but after you've lost a bit then start using it.

I can't wait for this one. Shane Warne is the best bowler that has ever walked the earth. Every cricket fan knows he is great & he is a cheeky chappy personality as well. I also heard Mark Nicholas commentates & Simon Taufel umpires in this game...just great!

He will be the big star of The Ashes this winter & this game will be massive.

Disappointing, as it's too repetitive

Although the concept of this game is good and a group of us had an enjoyable evening playing it, the game very soon became repetitive, so I don't think it's good value for money. It was also confusing following the instructions at times.

Calling All United Fans

If you want lots of football clips and trivia then get this.

You choose round by round from a 'team sheet' style selection screen. If you get enough questions right the DVD reveals a secret video which gives you a chance to win Premier League tickets at the end of the game. Cool Eh?!

Gameplay is better than other DVD games and there are so many great goals on this that I had forgotten (and it was great to remind my Liverpool supporting brother about). Good to see the boss introducing and some action from the old boys (Cantona and Bryan Robson etc).

Excellent DVD treatment of the olf favourite

The combination of DVD sound quality (Dolby and/or DTS)and picture and a fine performance lead me to recommend this highly. A real joy to own. A small ensemble accompanies Ms Fisher playing the four seasons in one of four set-ups within the National Gardens of Wales. An inspired choice of venue. The performance is just perfect to my ears. Thee are two different programmes on the disc. One of them cuts between the performers and the National Gardens. While I enjoyed the views around the botanical gardens, I was distracted by the overlaid sound effects (rustle of leaves, gurgle of running water in a stream and so on) which I felt unnecessary. This was my first exposure to the work of Julia Fisher, a fine young German violinist. After buying this I've found she is recording work solo and with orchestras on Pentatone SACDs. Her Bach solo violin discs are outstanding also.

Loved it

I really enjoyed volume one and the family and I were ready for vol 2. We weren't disappointed, it was as good as the first.

Nicholas Parsons rules! But...

I have to start out by saying that I am a fan of Nicholas Parsons, both in Just a Minute and Sale of the Century.

This is an interactive DVD done in a small studio with, at the beginning at least, a slightly nervous-looking Nicholas Parsons. He is dressed very well, and is a gentlemen throughout. Four stars for his performance.

The rules of the television version of Sale of a Century are these: You start out with £15, and the three teams may choose to buzz in to answer questions worth initially £1, and in later rounds £3 and £5. An incorrect answer costs that amount of money. At the end of each round the leader is given the chance to buy something.

Now forget all that. The DVD version is nothing to do with this. So why is this"Sale of the Century"?

There are 6 rounds, and the first 5 rounds are the same. A subject is chosen at random, and each team has to answer 5 questions about that subject. Nicholas Parsons reads each question - that is a nice touch, and is worth an extra star. Whoever wins the round goes to the bonus round.

Here's the problem. The 5 questions in the round are multiple-choice - and easy. The time limit of 15 seconds was not a real time limit at all. We consistently got all 5 questions right, which meant it went to sudden death, where we had to answer another question correctly - and then another - and then another.

The questions were too easy, and the only mistakes we made were eventually silly mistakes to progress to the next round. Why wasn't the time limit reduced? Maybe because this isn't an arcade DVD? (But then, see the 6th round).

The difference between each of the first 5 rounds - the money per question, and the subject. Wow(!) Lose 2 stars.

So, the winner goes to the bonus round, where he has to answer a question. In the first 4 rounds the prize reduced the longer you took to answer it. But you had to answer the question. Get it wrong, and you lose that amount of money. Don't answer the question, and you don't lose the smallest amount of money on the board - you lost the biggest amount. So winning the round was not necessary the best thing to do.

Additionally, some of the prizes were ridiculous amounts of money. Suppose you were playing for £5 a question, then £10, £15 and then £20 per question. And then you could win in the bonus round a prize worth £800. That is just way out of proportion, and make a mockery of the competition.

In the 5th bonus round, assuming you were still awake, you chose the amount of money you were playing for. That's the big difference(!)

Finally, the 6th round. You could answer as many questions as you could in 60 seconds (because this is apparently an arcade DVD!), and no penalty for wrong answers. But in one of my games, there was no variety of questions; there were only 16 questions for the DVD to choose from. For all 3 players. This means that the same questions were coming up, time and again. And the answers were in the same position. So eventually you didn't read the question properly, you just pressed the correct button. Lose 1 star.

So, a great host, too easy questions resulting in endless tie-breakers, out of scale prizes, and presumably bad programming in the bonus round. 2 stars.

Sorry Nicholas. You were great. It was the DVD.

Good value

Really easy and quick to play and a good mix of questions. Liked this one a lot.

Brilliant - much better than the first one!

I bought this DVD game yesterday and it's great. It's much better than last years because the questions are much more approachable and you can play with all the family. There is a bigger variety of questions and its really up to date. The Gary bits are great too.

Hugely disappointing!!!

Emmerdale has been on our screens for nearly 35 years now, yet this DVD game only concentrates on events and storylines from the 1990s onwards. It seems that whenever they do a celebration video or DVD game, with Coronation Street, they can be bothered to go back to the early days of the programme in the 60s and 70s, but Emmerdale is very badly treated in this sense as they only seem to concentrate on storylines from the plane-crash (1993) onwards. There was a wealth of storylines and characters from the 70s and 80s which could have been used if only they had been bothered to do any research, and the same goes for the VHS from the last big Emmerdale anniversary (30 years) in that it zooms through the early days and is just a shoddy compilation of recent clips, with very little from the 70s and 80s. 30 Years of Emmerdale? 10 years of Emmerdale would have been more appropriate.
