I've played it

I was fortunate enough to get a sneaky play on this game and can assure you that it's great entertainment for the whole family. It's really nicely put together - great video clips, good commentary from Mark Nicholas and, of course, the legend that is Shane Warne.

Entertaining but classic clips irritating

The basic format is good and entertaining but the classic clips round is very irritating. The first time we felt cheated as the 2nd team had exactly the same clip and questions. This got even more ridiculous when further playing the classic clip was the same every time either the bill for adults or totally frank for kids.

Nicholas Parsons rules! But...

I have to start out by saying that I am a fan of Nicholas Parsons, both in Just a Minute and Sale of the Century.

This is an interactive DVD done in a small studio with, at the beginning at least, a slightly nervous-looking Nicholas Parsons. He is dressed very well, and is a gentlemen throughout. Four stars for his performance.

The rules of the television version of Sale of a Century are these: You start out with £15, and the three teams may choose to buzz in to answer questions worth initially £1, and in later rounds £3 and £5. An incorrect answer costs that amount of money. At the end of each round the leader is given the chance to buy something.

Now forget all that. The DVD version is nothing to do with this. So why is this"Sale of the Century"?

There are 6 rounds, and the first 5 rounds are the same. A subject is chosen at random, and each team has to answer 5 questions about that subject. Nicholas Parsons reads each question - that is a nice touch, and is worth an extra star. Whoever wins the round goes to the bonus round.

Here's the problem. The 5 questions in the round are multiple-choice - and easy. The time limit of 15 seconds was not a real time limit at all. We consistently got all 5 questions right, which meant it went to sudden death, where we had to answer another question correctly - and then another - and then another.

The questions were too easy, and the only mistakes we made were eventually silly mistakes to progress to the next round. Why wasn't the time limit reduced? Maybe because this isn't an arcade DVD? (But then, see the 6th round).

The difference between each of the first 5 rounds - the money per question, and the subject. Wow(!) Lose 2 stars.

So, the winner goes to the bonus round, where he has to answer a question. In the first 4 rounds the prize reduced the longer you took to answer it. But you had to answer the question. Get it wrong, and you lose that amount of money. Don't answer the question, and you don't lose the smallest amount of money on the board - you lost the biggest amount. So winning the round was not necessary the best thing to do.

Additionally, some of the prizes were ridiculous amounts of money. Suppose you were playing for £5 a question, then £10, £15 and then £20 per question. And then you could win in the bonus round a prize worth £800. That is just way out of proportion, and make a mockery of the competition.

In the 5th bonus round, assuming you were still awake, you chose the amount of money you were playing for. That's the big difference(!)

Finally, the 6th round. You could answer as many questions as you could in 60 seconds (because this is apparently an arcade DVD!), and no penalty for wrong answers. But in one of my games, there was no variety of questions; there were only 16 questions for the DVD to choose from. For all 3 players. This means that the same questions were coming up, time and again. And the answers were in the same position. So eventually you didn't read the question properly, you just pressed the correct button. Lose 1 star.

So, a great host, too easy questions resulting in endless tie-breakers, out of scale prizes, and presumably bad programming in the bonus round. 2 stars.

Sorry Nicholas. You were great. It was the DVD.

Slick presentation

I was pretty much forced into playing this game last night by a mate of mine who had just bought it and wanted to have a 2 player go. I think he really just wanted to thrash somebody, since my footy knowledge is pretty limited!!

Reluctant as I was, I gotta say it's fun! The questions have varying difficulty (you choose a short, medium or long pass for an easy, medium or hard question) so I could at least answer some of them (easy ones of course). Some good variations of question types - the Spot The Ball one's kept tripping us up all the time!!! Hint: the ball is NEVER in the obvious place! LOL
There's also plenty of movie clips and photo's with the questions (we saw some repeats, but that's ok...)

The virtual pitch was a pretty neat idea. Being that I play console games mostly and like to think I know what I'm talking about, it was a good choice to have iconic 'markers' for your players instead of trying to cram lots of detailed little men on-screen, would have been too messy in my opinion. As it was, it's clear and still nice to look at.

I thought the scoreboard animations were really slickly done too, when you 'score' and see the animation, you feel chuffed to bits and when it gets 'saved' you feel just as gutted! :)
In fact the whole presentation is slick, lots of glossy menu's slipping in and out of the screen, animated team selection flags, footage playing in the background etc... far better than I would have expected from a DVD game, more console-like (PS2, Xbox, and so on).

Anyway, short version - I was won over by it, and will definitely be playing this again!! A couple of beers will go down nicely with it, and it'd be great to get you in the mood before an England match kicks off!! LOL

i've never played this game but thought it could be good for xmas parties.
i was very disapointed, it doesn't have the original music so it makes it hard to guess what is being played and seems very tacky and cheap.

Great for a party

We played this at a christmas party yesterday and had a lot of fun. Really easy to set up your own little bookies, bet and then scream at the TV for your dog to win! Ideal game to play with a few mates, and maybe even take some money off them!

The running man out in the wild!

In a nut-shell rutger Hauer seeks out Ice T to be the latest in a long line of hunted prey. Offering Ice T money, food and a hair cut, he takes T up to his ranch deep in the forest. There he and some of his rich colleagues set T free and track him down. Picking them off one by one T manages to survive. Hauer eventually gives up and returns to the city closely followed by the ice man. Now ice T uses his street knowledge to carry out his revenge. Well worth a look

UMMM

Well when I bought this I thought it would be a combination of cardio and toning, and then when Nikki said you need to include Cardio, i realised I wasted money.
I do Cardio, but I haven't really got a workoug that combines cardio and toning in the same time otherwise I have to do two different workouts.
Instead I decided to do eithere 1 section 10-15 mins long or 2 sections 20-30mins a day instead and then changing the levels so i didn't get bored and worked out all different muscles...

If your not ready to tone up yet, and you need to do Cardio avoide for now, but after you've lost a bit then start using it.

I expected more

My girlfriend and I gave up playing after less than half an hour, The same t.v clip was shown twice in the same game on two occasions and the last straw came when we began a second game and the first question was the same as the first question in our first game! Perhaps we just had a bad experience but I don’t think we’ll be playing it again to find out.

Dull, waste of time and money

Was really looking forward to playing this game with our friends one saturday night, but have to say was utterly disapointed. Thought a lot of the questions were either far too easy or stupidly impossible. Took far too long to load each question, didn’t give you very long to answer, i.e by the time you read the question your time was up. Spent nearly 2 hours playing and didn’t seem to progress very far, took too long. Also questions were repetitive and dull.Waste of money.

Very good

Bought this after playing the excellent John Francome Wacky Races and although a more serious race game it delivered what it promised. John Francome's accent is ace!
