Star Trek 2 - Wrath Of Khan Dvd [1982]

Our Price: £4.98
Used Price: £3.98
New Price: £4.97

Review for Star Trek 2 - Wrath Of Khan Dvd [1982]:
Cheap DVD edition, nothing more.
It's Star Trek II. It is one of the best Star Trek movies. This DVD edition is a great price, however it has a reason to be...
The visual quality is a bit low. It looks rather pixelated in parts, especially shots with a lot of fine detail (it is most noticable during the end credits, which appear to wriggle up the screen). The other reason why it's so cheap is that has a lack of the additional features that many of the best movies come with. Also, the visuals doesn't appear to have been digitally restored, which was a let down (at one point the film appears to wobble and everything gets a bit 'fun house mirror' for a frame or two, just watch it in freeze frame). One more thing, it's in 2.35:1 which is VERY wide screen. If you have a 4:3 TV like me, then you'll be facing two very thick black stripes. On the plus side, it does have a vastly better sound quality in the form of Dolby Digital which is nice. If you have a VHS edition, then don't bother with this edition.

To sum up, this is Star Trek II on a DVD. Nothing more, nothing less. Excellent value for money for probably the best ST movie, if that's all you want.

Review for Star Trek: Enterprise - Season 2:
2nd season follows on well from the first...
If you are new to Enterprise and never saw these episodes on TV, you'll be pleased to know that this Season 2 set follows on directly from the 1st Season cliffhanger.

If you can forget about most of the Trek back-story from other Trek series and take this on it's own merits it's highly enjoyable. This season shows more character development as the crew(and viewer) travels along with them, discovering new planets and new problems! I originally saw the series on TV, and on second viewing I have been enjoying it more than ever on DVD!

The quality of transfer to DVD is excellent. The interactive menus are attractive and easy to navigate. The"easter eggs" are again fairly easy to find. The behind-the-scenes footage is, like the 1st season, very interesting, with entertaining outtakes too....especially if you aren't used to seeing the actors as themselves!

The design of the box set is great, and matches the 1st Season set. Nicely designed packaging all around.

If you liked the 1st Season then you won't need too much persuasion to buy this one. 5 stars!!!

Excellent Series but be careful!!!
This is an absolutely excellent series!!! You're gonna love it, however I do urge you to be cautious, The first disk is faulty in the two copies I have bought, from different companies, there appears to be a fault and the lasering isnt successful and the episodes either skip or dont play atall. If you can find a good copy then great cos it is an excellent series, but be warned!!, ENJOY!!!

Review for Star Trek 3 - The Search For Spock [1984]:
Enjoyable sci-fi.
'The Search for Spock' continues where 'The Wrath of Khan' left off and its a fine continuation of the franchise. Like many of the original movies, it has dated but that doesnt spoil the fun. This is also the first star Trek film where the Klingons take on the role as the major villians. The original crew still all look yound enough to make it believable and there are some inpressive visual effects for a sci-fi movie this old. A must for even the most casual of Star Trek fans.

Best of the odd numbered trek
I think this film works well as the middle part of the 'trilogy' of Kahn, Search and Voyage (On its own it is nothing more than an expensive TV episode). Despite it being rather flat there are some standout moments - we get to see Spacedock, Excelsior, the Star Trek cantina, the death of Enterprise and the always watchable Christopher Lloyd as Cmdr Kruge. 6/10.

Review for Star Trek V : The Final Frontier Se Dvd [1989]:
Not bad just dull
This fifth film from the original Star Trek crew does seem to give credence to the theory that the odd numbered Star Trek films are less than great. The Final Frontier isn't a terrible film it is just rather dull and doesn't have the excitement factor that many of its fellow Trek films have. The plot about an outcast Vulcan searching for Eden at the centre of the galaxy doesn't really grab your attention as it should and the general lack of conflict throughout much of the film does lead to little in the way of excitement.

The performances of those involved tends to swing from hammy to good in different places but this is something that many of the Trek films have in common. The film does have its moments being both funny and touching in places, and it does pick up somewhat at the conclusion but I feel this is generally a bit to late to salvage the film totally. Overall although this is not the worst film in the Trek franchise it is by no means one of the best either.

Review for Earth Final Conflict : Complete Season 1:
Worth the wait
I'm admittedly a stalwart Earth: Final Conflict fan, but even if I wasn't, I think I'd be thrilled with this DVD set. The fan community is in general agreement that the first season is the most solid. It does tend to be a little more cerebral than its subsequent seasons, but in a very nicely-done way. It has its action moments, but they don't overpower the rest of the show, and because they're not prevalent, they tend to be that much more special when they are there.

Characters and developments are generally not outlandish: while many sci-fi shows will have a gadget-of-the-week which is never heard from again, season 1 E: FC on the whole avoids that particular pitfall. Characters also generally behave in a consistent (and sensible) way, which makes them more engaging, sympathetic and believable.

The special effects are exceptional for a first-time low(ish)-budget television production from 1997, though a few of the SFX shots do look quite dated in comparison to 2006 standards. Others still hold up very well.

The only slight gripe that I have is that you don't get a whole lot more than just the episodes. The strength of the episodes means that this is not much of a problem in the long run. It's very solid science-fiction, and tries not to patronise its audience or subject them to gung-ho action with be-catsuited women.

Star Trek Insurrection Se [1998]

Our Price: £6.98
Used Price: £3.74
New Price: £6.84

Review for Star Trek Insurrection Se [1998]:
Not bad - but could have been better
The Star Trek films are notorious for suffering from an alternating pattern of good and bad films - even numbered films are good and the odd ones are bad. Good films include Star Trek 2 - The Wrath of Khan, 4 - The Journey Home, 6 - The Undiscovered Country and 8 - First Contact (although the 10th Trek film, Nemesis, broke this trend). There are many theories as to why this should be, but needless to say that the weakest films in the Trek series have been the odd ones, most notably Star Trek 5 - The Final Frontier (what WERE they thinking?)
So its with this in mind that we look at Insurrection, the ninth in the series of Star Trek films and I have to say that its not bad at all. It does suffer from a slightly wacky plot (a planet that bestows immortality and NO-ONE has heard of it!) and there are times when you feel someone should have taken the writer to one side and had a quiet word (klingon puberty - hmmm...) If you are willing to set these things aside, the film is enjoyable to watch with an interesting plot twist at the end. The writer gives Picard more action man moments, continuing a trend set in First Contact which the audience seem to enjoy but I find a little dissapointing. Here is a man of long experience that in his later years of being a captain seems to resort to solving problems with a gun rather than diplomacy - but that's another matter.
In short, Insurrection is a good film but not un-touched by the curse of odd numbered Trek film.

Review for Star Trek 7 -Generations Special Edition [1995]:
Underrated Trek film
Generations is often looked at as one of the rubbish"odd" number films of Trek. I disagree. Upon viewing the new SE of Generations i've found a new affinity for this film. Is it flawed ? Certainly... the death of Kirk, to me, was not done well and in my opinion McDowell is the wrong choice for the villian.. personally i found McDowell failed to convey the angst ridden Soren well instead choosing to make him the stereotypical hammy Trek villian. But its the plus points of Generations that often get overlooked. The introduction of Cpt John Harriman was added to Trek canon for the first time (not to mention the Enterprise-B). The scene aboard the SS Enterprise at sea was heartily amusing"Data... that was not funny". Generations had a story to tell.. a story about regrets and the nature of life and time. Picards torment over his loss and Kirks regret at dedicating his lfe to starfleet both have very emotional resonances. The passing of the torch from TOS to TNG is handled seamlessly and with 3 original cast memebers plus the entire TNG to get camera time i feel that the script and the direction handled the job well.

Review for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 3 [1995]:
A great view
Season Three is a great season, with only a few mediocre episodes (Meridian & Fascination).

My favourite episodes are (in no particular order):
- THE SEARCH 1 & 2 (Odo meet his"family")
- THE HOUSE OF QUARK (very funny)
- SECOND SKIN (Kira's worst nightmare comes true)
- CIVIL DEFENSE (The look on Dukat's face halfway through the episode is priceless)
- DEFIANT (Tom Riker (from TNG's"SECOND CHANCES") steals the Defiant)
- PAST TENSE 1 & 2 (Great drama, great acting)
- VISIONARY (I always like stories dealing with time travel)
- DISTANT VOICES (A very surreal episode)
- THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS (another mirror universe adventure. The Mirror Kira is one of my favourite characters)
- IMPROBABLE CAUSE/THE DIE IS CAST (Great acting by Andrew Robinson and René Auberjonois (Garak & Odo)
- FACETS (We"meet" all of Dax's former hosts, including Curzon)
- THE ADVERSARY (a very claustrophobic episode with a surprise ending)

The extra's are all in the same league with those of season 1 & 2, with a feature on the Dominion, ODO'S CREW DOSSIER, MICHAEL WESTMORE'S ALIENS and several hidden files.
If you are a fan, as I am, you will already have bought this. If you are not, you will soon be if you buy it.

Star Trek 5 - Final Frontier - Dvd [1989]

Our Price: £6.97
Used Price: £3.08
New Price: £3.28

Review for Star Trek 5 - Final Frontier - Dvd [1989]:
Better than they say
My God, ( no pun intended ) does this film get some stick! And why? Bill Shatner's directing is actually good, from the opening, Laurence Of Arabia style slo-mo shot of the rider coming across the desert, to his ability to accentuate the punchy comic-timing of much of the material.

There's lots of laughs ( Scotty banging his head, Spock's casual one-up manship ), but also action and some seriousness. The acting is of a good standard - notably the 3 leads and Laurence Luckinbill as Sybok - and the relationship between Kirk, Spock and McCoy was never displayed better than here.

Many slate this film, and many of the odd numbered entries generally - and okay, the effects and sets aren't the best. But the other, 'even' films all have flaws too - II has no face-to-face confrontation between Kirk and Khan other than over the 'comms', nor a flashback to exactly why Khan hates the Admiral so much; IV's hippy-ish, new-age values are now very dated; 'VI' is meandering and slow, and has a feeling of 'one too many', and so on.

Like so many things, this is worth judging on its own merits.

Review for Star Trek 10: Nemesis (Special Edition):
Star Trek On Another Level..
Ok being a trek fan for a number of years, i feel part qualfied to provide some input. This film is really a reflection of the franchise needing to move on and represents the current environment we live in - obession with power, greed and oppression. Star Trek overall has been getting darker - something that i feel was key through DS9 and Voyager - and this film reflects how we deal with ambitious countries (S.Korea/Iran etc) - although Picard is trying to be ethical, the end result is a great battle to prevent a larger war - which is almost an indirect reference to U.S policy at the moment - prevention and no direct confrontation unless provoked. StarTrek has matured and does now need a break, with some re-grouping of the franchise - i think we need to stop doing retrospective star trek and keep on moving forward into the future and this film is doing this. This is not a traditional trek film, and was worthy of better box office returns - but please JJ Abrams - no pre kirk films, lets push trek to the future and build a new era of trek!

The conclusion to Voyager is very emotional and even shocking to the crew themselfs and you cant belive that it has happened and after all their struggles, arguments and losses you know that the crew or should i saw the family of Voyager FINALLY get back to Earth. Review for Star Trek: Voyager - Season 6 [1996]:
Favourite Season
This sixth season of Voyager is my favorite of the seven, as it moves above and beyond the typical storytelling style that has burdened the series in earlier seasons.
While there are a few less 'action' based episodes, there are plenty of situations where the characters really shine. The two that grew the most this season are without a doubt The Doctor and Seven of Nine.
The Doctor has a trilogy of great episodes. In 'Tinker, Tenor, Doctor, Spy', he has uncontrollable daydreams. 'Virtuoso' sees him become a popular performer to a race who is new to music. In 'Life Line', he has a chance to meet and treat his creator, who is not exactly happy to see him.
Seven of Nine has much to contend with from her past as a Borg drone. In 'Survival Instinct', she recalls a time when she and several drones were severed from the collective for several hours. She must also deal with her growing human emotions; specifically her maternal instincts when she encounters Borg children in 'Collective', and the parents of one of these children in 'Child's Play'.
There are several more episodes that are truly exceptional.
'Equinox Part II' concludes the crews conflict with a rogue Starfleet vessel.
'Barge of the Dead' is a very powerful inner struggle for B'Elana as she is forced to face her Klingon heritage.
'Riddles' is a chance to see Tuvok outside of his usual Vulcan mannerisms.
'One Small Step' gives us an insight into Star Trek history when Voyager encounters the wreckage of an early Mars probe.
'Pathfinder' chronicles the efforts of TNG's Reg Barclay as he tries to make contact with Voyager from Earth.
'Fair Haven' introduces us to a charming Irish village created on the holodeck.
'Blink of an Eye' is a facinating story where Voyager observes a planet where time moves much quicker and they observe the evolution of an entire civilisation in a matter of days.
'Tsunkatse' is a chance to see Seven of Nine placed into personal combat as she is forced to fight in a violent television show.
In 'Good Shepherd', we meet three mis-fits in the crew, and Captain Janeway decides to take them under her wing to help them adjust.
In 'Live Fast and Prosper', the crew discover that con artists have impersonated them to steal from other species.
'Muse' is a clever take on theatre when B'Elana crash lands on a world during a Shakespereian time period.
'Fury' deals with the return of Kes in a fit of revenge.
'The Haunting of Deck Twelve' involes the invasion of a sinister non-coporial alien entity that takes control of the ship.
Lastly, 'Unimatrix Zero Part I' sees Voyager face the Borg once again as they discover a small number of drones who can return to an individule state during regeneration.

To conclude, a very worthwhile season. The seventh season also carries on the trends of this season, albeit with a rather rushed conclusion to the series. Still a strong season however. If you didn't like Voyager early on, give this season a try and you may be surprised.

Review for Star Trek 6 - Undiscovered Country - Dvd [1992]:
Suprisingly enjoyable
The original Star Trek movie was decent. The subsequent 'Wrath of Khan' and 'The Search for Spock' were even better and enjoyable sci-fi sequels. However, the rot set in during overly cheasy 'The Voyage Home'. 'The Undicovered Country' however, is a decent effott and a movie that showed there was still some life in the aging franchise. The cast, despite getting on in years, manage to pull this off. Its a well written story, decently acted and well produced. This should of been the movie that helped us say goodbye to the aging original cast and prepared us for the next generation .... unfortuneatley they decided to make the 'Final Fronteir' instead ... bad move.

Review for Star Trek: Fan Collective - Time Travel Box Set:
A fine collection of episodes
This collection of time travel episodes from the first four Star Trek series is mostly excellent. There are 12 episodes in all and quite a few of them are classics:

The City on the Edge of Forever from the original series is one such episode. McCoy is accidently injected with an overdose which makes him paranoid (and somewhat mad!). Subsequently he jumps through a time portal and Kirk and Spock have to follow to save him. Unfortunately McCoy will change Earth history, by saving a social worker from a car accident in the 1930's. This is a wonderful episode written by the Science Fiction author Harlan Ellison. The ending of this episode is what made the original Star Trek series such a great show.

My other favourite from this boxed set (on 4 discs) is Trials and Tribble-ations from the Deep Space 9 series 5. In this episode the crew of DS9 travel back in time 100 years and meet up the original Enterprise crew. This is very cleverly done and frequently very funny.

There are no bad episodes in the boxed set, even the Voyager episode (which I was never a big fan of) is pretty good. So if time travel is your thing then this is a good set to get.

Review for Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 7:
Strong end to the evolution
With Star Trek traditionally being about 'boldly going where no-one has gone before', the final season rarely travels to 'strange new worlds', and instead the exploration turns inwards, searching the characters themselves. Comparing the final instalment, to the first season, the evolution of the show is obvious, the show started with a group of random people on a big ship, searching the galaxy, and ended with a group of friends, who have been through a lot together, exorcised some of their demons, and learnt a lot about themselves.

The happy endings, which were all the rage earlier in the show, are replaced by some darker episodes, ending with sometimes unresolved or only partially resolved conflicts.

Rather than tie-up the loose ends before the season finale, the show leaves us with even more questions; will Picard and Dr. Crusher ever get together, what happens to Wesley (though not everyone may want to know!!) and what happens to Ro Laren after she joins the Marquis... (admittedly, one or two of these questions are answered later in films and other series)

The final episode brings it all together, the last episode can sometimes be an anti-climax, but this one was a brilliant final legacy to the show, and gave some sense of completeness.

Recommended episodes:

Most have their merits, but watch out for: 'Descent', 'The Gambit', 'Parallels', 'The Pegasus', 'Lower Decks' and 'All Good Things...'

The DVD is well packed as usual, though after seven seasons worth of extras, some of the documentaries and interviews can get a little tedious. Still, it's nice to see that Paramount continued the effort to include loads of extras right to the end.
