Review for Star Trek 5 - Final Frontier - Dvd [1989]:
Very good- deals with philosophical, spiritual and personal issues
Admittedly Star Trek V used to be my 2nd worst Star Trek film, the worst being the original motion picture. However, in recent weeks, I have grown to appreciate it on it's own merit if you wish.

The scale of the film is in parts radically bigger to the 4 prequels- especially with the terrorists taking hostages on Nimbus 3, to which the Enterprise is called to respond.

Admittedly some of the humour is rather cheesy, and Kirk, Spock and McCoy sitting around a camp fire at the end of the film singing songs is hardly a fitting end. Still this is partly remedied by the spectacular cinematography of the Yosemite National Park.

The scenes with 'God' in, are quite remarkable, and suspenseful. Main bits to avoid are where Sybok takes Spock and McCoy on a mental tour of their pain- this part which last a good 15 minutes is undeniably boring.

The concept of the Enterprise flying almost 22000 light years to the centre of the galaxy is scientifically- even by star trek standards quite unrealistic, but somehow retains a profoundly entertaining air about it- what with penetrating what Kirk describes as 'The Great Barrier'. The arrival of the klingons at the end is totally predictable, but the conclusion to that crisis, is shall we say, slightly more original.

Finally, I think what gives this film a good edge is the stunning musical score composed by Jerry Goldsmith. I mean what a genious! The film is energised by the great score music providing a refined film with much to enjoy.

This is a very good film. A worthwhile buy.

Review for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season 4 [1995]:
Outstanding achievement
This season sees the cast of DS9 becoming really grounded in what they do, as well as excellent scripting, storylines, action/battle scenes etc. This has to be the best season of DS9 there is. Although some of the episodes are very political, the pleasing acting performances of each character sustains enjoyment.

Best episodes:
The Way of a Warrior 1 & 2
Starship Down
Paradise Lost 1 & 2
Shattered Mirror
Hard Time

Excellent special features make this is a 100% must have.

Review for Star Trek: Voyager - Season 4 [1996]:
Enjoyable
Although I was a little disappointed with Voyager in the first few seasons, I still found it very enjoyable to watch.

My main problem is to do with writers ignoring what you would think to be the biggest issues in Voyager's unique situation. Being cut-off from aid and supplies, I was expecting the ship to loose many of it's systems/technology from fire fights and lack of power. But each episode, we see Voyager looking brand-new and fully functional.

It would be much better if, say for example, the shield generators were badly damaged and couldn't be used again until they could find replacements via trade or something. Their ability to repair anything at any time just detracted from the fact that they were supposed to be in a harsh situation.

Also the whole Maquis thing was hardly touched upon except in the first season. We are supposed to believe that they are all getting along fine now, since the crew agree with every decision that is made, without any internal conflict. Some great stories could have come from this, but alas, it was not to be...

I think that this season realised they hadn't done what was expected, so just admitted that and did much bigger and better stories, without worrying too much about the being cut-off aspect of the show or the crew conflict side, unless a particular story required it.

So with that, we are introduced to new character 7 of 9 and lose the lovable Kes. The Borg also play a much bigger role this season, although they don't seem as deadly as The Next Generation's Borg. 7 of 9 has this uncanny ability to solve just about any of Voyager's problems with [insert Borg technology here] or by recalibrating [insert modified technology here], which can become tiresome at times. But the sci-fi story is still fun to watch, if somewhat unbelievable.

I would have thought that Voyager would become a much deeper and complex show, but has in fact become more fluffy, but in an enjoyable way. No where near as good as Deep Space Nine, but worth seeing if the long story arcs of DS9 are a little too ming boggling for you. Voyager is just no-brainer fun!

I know there are knockers with The Next Generation but if you are a trekkie, then it is just one of the things you have to have.

Review for Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 3:
Where it all starts to come together
The first two seasons of the Next Generation certainly weren't bad, with some classic episodes and the gradual development of charchters, but this season is where the show repeatedly hit the nail on the head. There aren't quite as many stand out shows here as in season 4, but a genuine feeling of quality in writing, acting and set-design graces the show.

Review for Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 6 [1990]:
The best Season of Next Generation
In all the other Star Trek seasons all the episodes act as a small movie. Each episode, never really carries the story further from the next episode, as each episode acts as a complitely new adventure. This was actually quite cool at the beginning, but after a while when I get to love the characters and to know them by heart, I thought this began to wear out the series. You would think that after an encounter with the borg, the ship would have to undergo repairs. Why couldn't the episode after that be about the star trek crew at the space station (with their ship of course being repaired?)

Ah well. It was therefore surprising that in Star Trek generation 6, you actually saw elements of each episode being carried over to the next. Hurray! A surprise second part of an episode (that I fell in love with) from season 2, Q (well, I've missed him), Barkley, and a whole lot of other nice treats. If you want the best season of Star Trek in my opinion, get this season.

Review for Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 7:
Final send-off
It's a great show.

It really was worth watching all seven years. And now we've slowly come to an end and it is really sad to part from the weekly adventures of the bold crew that was on USS Enterprise 1701-D.

I admit, it is fiction, but it is hell of a ride through scientific fiction. It was educational, emotional, overwhelming. And as Spock would say, fascinating.

All Good Thigs [must end] was, ironically, the episode title for the final two-parter which featured everything that fans wanted combined in an episode. Excellent writing, which earned several awards, gave Q a role that actually set continuity in the whole series and Q was the one that had the honors to engage the stories and to end them in style, as he did in"All Good Things".

Season 7 isn't the best what TNG had to offer but it had somewhat weird stories dealing with the inner parts of the charachters. The DVD box-set is, as usual, packed with standard stuff, such as the:

Mission Overview: Year Seven
which takes us over the most memorable missions of this season.

A Captain's Tribute
a real gem with Patrick Stewart where he talks about the experiences with the cast and crew over the past seven years.

Departmental Briefing: Production
of an episode directed by Gates McFadden and Brannon Braga bragging about how well he writes episodes:).

Starfleet Memories and Moments
it was the best of the times, it was the worst of times. All the fun and magic captured on the set.

The Making of"All Good Things..."
The title says it all. This episode will really knock you out with quality!

It was a wonderful ride. Farewell and don't forget to live long and prosper!

Review for Star Trek: Voyager - Season 5 [1996]:
Getting better and better
Star Trek series have a habit of getting better and better as they mature. Season 5 doesn't disappoint. Rather than write one of the usual reviews I thought I mention my surprise when I discovered that the feature length"Dark Frontier" episode - a highlight of this season - featured deleted scenes that did not air previously and were not present on the VHS version of the episode. As always these boxsets' bonus features are usually worth the price itself, but this slightly altered version of a much watched episode really surprised me and I'm so glad I bought this.
