Mummy's Ghost/Mummy's Curse (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Used Price: £4.20
New Price: £4.67

Review for Mummy's Ghost/Mummy's Curse (REGION 1) (NTSC):
Poor and average
The Mummys Ghost and the Mummys Curse are both late Universal horror films being made in 1944. Sadly by this time Universal had lost their ability to make classic horror films and were about to enter the Abbott and Costello meet the Wolfman era.

Curse is the better of two films and warrants the 3 stars I have awarded the pair. Indeed this film has one classic scene that must rank as one of the best scenes in any of Universals horror films. Watch when Princess Ananka awakes from the mud. This is really well done and has an almost 3D effect to it. Sadly though the rest of the film is at best average and rather pointlessly for a short 61 minute movie its starts with a song in a bar.

The less said about Ghost the better. Its only redeeming feature was the ending which was very unlike Hollywood. For that it deserves credit.

Overall though these are basically very average films, which certainly do not compare with Universals orginal film starring Boris Karloff. Now that is a film you should be buying!

Hard Work
Stopped watching it after 30 minutes and that alone was a feat of endurance.

For all I know it may have turned into a Busby Berkeley musical afterwards - but I very much doubt it.

Lord Peter Wimsey - Have His Carcase [1987]

Used Price: £45.00
New Price: £77.20

Review for Lord Peter Wimsey - Have His Carcase [1987]:
Strong stuff
A lot of women want to poison their ex-boyfriends. Only a few actually DO.

But the suspicion is enough to land a woman in the dock in"Strong Poison," the first of a trilogy of mysteries about eccentric detective Lord Peter Wimsey and his romantic interest, crime writer Harriet Vane. While this episode spends a little too little time on the interesting side characters, it's a compelling mystery that seems hopeless at first.

Lord Peter Wimsey (Edward Petherbridge) becomes interested in the trial of Harriet Vane (Harriet Walter), a mystery writer who lived with her boyfriend until he proposed marriage (it had all been a test). Six months later, after a visit, her ex dropped dead of arsenic. But Peter is sure that Harriet didn't do the crime -- and he's fallen in love -- and so becomes determined to break this watertight case against her.

And so he turns his attention to suicide, since there was plenty of motive for that. But the most promising lead turns out to be the dead man's cousin, a successful lawyer whose motives and opportunity remain unknown -- as the court tells us, the only food that the deceased ate was also eaten by the suspect. But the brilliant Wimsey knows he can find the answer, before Harriet's retrial.

"Strong Poison" probably had a special signficance for Dorothy Sayers. First, it introduced her alter-ego, Harriet. Secondly, some of the events that happened to Harriet -- living with a boyfriend, the"test" -- really happened in real life, although presumably Sayers didn't come under suspicion of having murdered her ex.

The murder itself is very intriguing, if very slow-moving and roundabout. The case against Harriet is practically foolproof, so it's intriguing to see Wimsey carefully pulling the chinks out of it, and exposing another motive for the dead man's death. But they include some funny (if too brief) moments, like Peter having tea with a hilarious lesbian couple, or the fake seance that Peter's secretary holds.

Not to mention some great dialogue ("I don't positively repel you or anything like that, do I?"), including Sayers' needling at double standards for women ("You are bearing in mind, aren't you, that I've had a lover?""Oh, yes, so've I. Several, in fact. It's the sort of thing that could happen to anyone. I can produce quite good testimonials").

Petherbridge makes a perfect Peter -- tall, skinny and blonde, with a long nose and perpetually falling monocle, and the impression that he doesn't take himself too seriously. Walter is also quite good as the prickly, and the supporting actors (especially Richard Morant as Bunter) are all extremely good, right down to the locksmith-turned-preacher.

"Strong Poison" was a good start to the trilogy of Wimsey-Vane mysteries, and an excellent adaptation of Sayers' mystery. Definitely worth watching, for those who like slow, dryly amusing British mysteries.

The Phoenix and the Carpet [1997] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Used Price: £3.66
New Price: £4.40

Review for The Phoenix and the Carpet [1997] (REGION 1) (NTSC):
The BBC adaption ’made’ into a Disney movie & very good
This is the BBC adaptation of The Phoenix and the carpet (from 1997). The book was written by Edith Nesbit in 1904. She wrote 44 books including 'The Railway children (1906)' and 'Five Children and It (1902)'. This adaptation has an all star cast: Miriam Margolyes, Jean Alexander, Christopher Biggins, and David Suchet (phoenix's voice). The story is the sequel to 'Five children and it' and does feature it's Psammead (sand fairy) in a guest role. This series was made well after '5 children' so the child actors had to replaced, although as usual for these BBC serials the top notch acting from the kids often upstages the adults. Naturally it's all a bit Edwardian middle class, but this often works to the story's advantage as it means they can wonder about freely in a gang as children used to do in simpler times (with the notion that the older ones are looking after their younger siblings).

Although an excellent adaptation and really enjoyed by my children (boy 9, girl 11), note that this is a 'Disney' offering and so the original 6 episodes at 28 minutes each have been heavily cut and made into a seamless 93 minute movie (still very good). The overall quality of this adaptation is excellent and the special effects are to a high standard (certainly more than adequate). Also it's not available as a complete BBC DVD yet so this is at least a lot better than nothing. Naturally the BBC's 'Five children and it' DVD is a logical pre-view, but it's not essential to the plot (but it is well worth seeing if you have preteen children about). This story is more about adventure and travel than the earlier slightly more moralistic book. There are still 'wishes' to be granted by the carpet though, and the onboard Phoenix adds the wise commentary, largely along the lines of"Actually it would be a really bad idea to do that, oops too late !". Other superb BBC DVD adaptations ideal for preteens are The Shoebox Zoo, The Narnia Chronicles, The Box of delights and The Borrowers.

Review for The Simpsons - Classics - The Last Temptation Of Homer:
Badly authored, but great episodes
Yes, Sophia is right, but think about the 4 episodes! They are pure Simpsons gold. Let's go through the episodes, shall we?

Simpson and Delilah:
Homer lies to his company health plan in order to get a drug that restores his hair. With a full head of hair, Homer becomes a wealthy executive, with a loving assistant (Harvey Fierstein) - until a jealous Smithers trips him up.

One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Bluefish:
The Simpsons go to a sushi bar, where Homer inadvertently eats a poisoned blowfish. Confronted with the possibility of his imminent death, Homer makes a list of the things he's wanted to do in life, and races against time to complete them.

Homer Alone:
When Marge freaks out in the middle of a traffic jam, the family sends her to the Rancho Relaxo spa to get her groove back. Bart and Lisa are horrified to be sent to live with their aunts, while Homer, put in charge of just Maggie, promptly loses her.

Colonel Homer:
After an unpleasant trip to The Springfield Googolplex Theater, Homer goes to a cowboy bar for some R & R. He meets Lurleen Lumpkin (Beverly D'Angelo), a country singer whose career he decides to manage. Marge becomes jealous and fears Lurleen is a threat to their marriage. Features the hit song,"Bagged Me A Homer."

There are some fantastic episodes on this DVD, but if you don't like skipping through 'Warning' menus in various language, this DVD isn't for you.

The Firm/Elephant [1988]

Used Price: £12.09
New Price: £6.11

Review for The Firm/Elephant [1988]:
Brilliant and Commanding Performance
This was THE first and in my view the only genuine attempt to portray the real mindset and culture of football hoologanism in Britain. The story line is realistic and convincing and the fight scenes are compelling. What is real value is the rationale of a man who transforms his traditional family life, midweek to his other"family" and true inner self on match days.

The film does not glorify violence but is a legitimate attempt to explain the powerful influence of peer and social pressures to 'belong'. The end of the film sends a clear message that such power has a proven ability to infiltrate society.

A truly brilliant performance from Oldman and a highly influential film

Very Good- Buy It!!
As a owner of all the simpsons dvds, I think that this one is up there with some of the better ones. A good selection of episodes and guest voices eg. The Baha Men, ’Wierd Al’ Yankovic. My only disappointment is that the episode in which Homer and Marge meet at High School is not included. A must buy for simpson fans because there has never been a dvd just about Homer and Marge before.

The Towering Inferno [1975] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Used Price: £5.74
New Price: £7.25

Review for The Towering Inferno [1975] (REGION 1) (NTSC):
Stellar Cast as tall as the building itself
What a movie! it has an all star cast including Paul Newman, Steve McQueen, William Holden and many more.

The basis for this movie is the opening of the worlds tallest building, but things aren't as perfect as they seem as architect Paul Newman discovers inadequate electrical wiring in the building which could result in dangerous concequences. He then reports this to the buildings owner James Duncan but he doesn't think that it is a problem and still decides to go on with the opening ceremony which puts 300 peoples lives in the balance while trapped on the top of the 138 storey skyscraper when the building goes on fire due to the poor wiring, this results in unpredictable explosions and fires breaking out everywhere in the building. It is now up to fireman Steve McQueen his crew and the aide of the Navy to rescue the 300 people on top of the building and put out the fire.

By far the best disaster movie ever made with a terrific all star cast. Not to be missed!

"Beyond Blunderdome"(season 11)original airdate: 26/9/99

When Homer and Marge attend a test screening of Mel Gibson's remake of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Homer gives the film a mercilessly rough critique. Rather than be angered by Homer's remarks, Gibson decides to hire him as a consultant on the script rewrites. Together Mel and Homer turn the movie into a bloody action flick. The film studio is so disgusted by the new cut that they attempt to block its distribution. Homer and Mel steal the only print of the film and escape the studio lot with the executives pursuing them. Commandeering the old Mad Max car from the Hollywood Auto Museum, the Simpsons and the movie star careen through the streets, causing all sorts of destruction. Can they escape with the print intact? Does Mr. Smith ever get to go to Washington? Why doesn't Mel Gibson have an accent anymore?
Guest Star: Mel Gibson as himself

"Itchy and Scratchy:The Movie" (season 4)
oringinal airdate:3/11/92

Every kid in the world waits with bated breath for the Itchy & Scratchy movie, but Bart is the only one who's not allowed to see it. Marge and Homer ground Bart for his bad behavior, making him miss the most important movie of his life. In a vision of the future in which his son becomes a Supreme Court Justice, Homer imagines seeing a revival of the movie with Bart.

"22 short films about Springfield" (seaon 7)
original airdate:14/4/96

In this breakneck tour through a day in the life of Springfield, we learn that a lot goes on in a little town in some state, somewhere in America. Apu takes the day off from the Kwik-E-Mart and has a kwik-e-romance. Barney finally pays Moe his bar tab only to witness Snake steal it. Principal Skinner nearly burns down his house while making lunch for Superintendent Chalmers, and Homer gets Maggie stuck in a newspaper vending machine. Lisa gets gum--and mayonnaise, and peanut butter--stuck in her hair, and Smithers almost dies from a bee sting. In a nod to Pulp Fiction, Snake and Chief Wiggum are taken hostage by Herman, the one-armed pawnshop owner, who wants to do god-knows-what. The two men are saved by Milhouse, who had to go to the bathroom really, really badly.

"A star is Burns" (season 6) original airdate:5/3/95

Springfield plays host to a film festival in which various townspeople display their original work. Barney presents"Pukahontas," a haunting meditation on his alcoholism; Apu directs"Bright Lights, Beef Jerky," the tale of a lonely man working the loneliest shift in a small-town Kwik-E-Mart. Two other important entries are Mr. Burns' autobiographical"A Burns for All Seasons" and Hans Moleman's"Man Getting Hit by Football." Despite receiving bribes from Mr. Burns, the judges choose to honor"Pukahontas" as the festival's best film. Luckily for Moleman, his film is remade as"Football in the Groin," a star vehicle for George C. Scott, and wins an Oscar for Best Picture.

Well"A star is Burns" is my favourite episode on the tape and others will probably agree with me,this is a really good dvd and I reomend it fully not 1 thing in it!

Different in its own funny way
I have watched the first 6 episodes, and I loved it. It's different from what we used to watch. I am looking forward to more episodes.
It is a bit slow, nevertheless, you get attached to know what Molly(Debra Messing) is going to do next. She is not Grace anymore from Will & Grace, yet you still feel her sense of humour coming from W&G.It is a new series that ought to be given a chance!

Cyber City Oedo 808 [1990]

New Price: £15.99

Review for Cyber City Oedo 808 [1990]:
Cyber punk at its very best.
Cyber punk is the kinda film that make people want to watch manga, kick ass action, amazing characters and great storylines. This IS cyber punk at its very best. It is easily the best filkm out of the cyberpunk colection (AD poilce and Genocyber) and is proberly the closest reperentation of pure cyberpunk out there. The basic story is about three criminals that are given all the high risk police jobs that nobody would dare take to lower there sentence.

For any of you who roleplay, there is game called"Cyber punk 2020" (I think it is on amazon under books) that is a game that uses the pure cyberpunk format. This video comes so very, very close it is unbeliveable. petty street crime, computer hackers that plug themselve in, techies living in there hidden basement and corput officals screwing each other over to get where they want to be. Its a great vid to use for story or character ideas.

But back to you none gamers. The video features some great animation and not bad dubbing either. The storys are classic Manga cyber punk stories but usually played by cops. where this is criminals take on the situation whcih adds a nice twist on things.

If you like cyberpunk films then whip out ur card and get this now, If are a manga fan for the action then get it also, if your looking more for a manga story then......hell just buy it no matter what you are looking for, because you just found it.
