incredible delivery!

pre-ordered this DVD back in January and it was delivered this morning even though the release date isn't until Monday so that's just amazing!! made my day :)
the special features are fantastic! I'm working my way through this very moment.
having read the books first and loving them as much as I do, I was looking forward to what the films would be like and if they could do justice to the books. I always try and separate, in a way, because even great film adaptations can never be like what you see in your mind when reading a (beloved!) book...but I have to say: I loved both Twilight and New Moon. of course there's always some scene you were hoping to see on the big screen and it wasn't included but that doesn't change my sentiments. I am impatiently awaiting Eclipse....:)

Two hours of tense stand-off in Iraq

Documentary style film about an adrenaline-junkie bomb disposal technician in post-invasion Iraq. It is similar in feel to the HBO series 'Generation Kill' though some scenarios in THL are outlandish and less credible compared to the fact-based GK. My main problem with THL is that the central character would have been busted long ago for not obeying instructions and unnecessarily putting his team at risk though there is the 'Catch-22' aspect to consider. Another favourable comparison is with the film 'Jarhead' - about a foot soldier's experience in the first Kuwait/Iraq war.

What the movie does brilliantly capture though, is the prosaic monotony of the soldiers life whilst under the constant stress of life threatening situations. The men are portrayed as aliens in a foreign landscape: unable to make progress against the enemy, anticipate where the next bullet or bomb will come from, or know who is neutral and who is foe. Much of their bravery is pointless as the bombs they disarm today will be replaced with new ones tomorrow.

The most memorable scene is set in a supermarket shopping isle back home. The shelves are stacked full of multiple brands and variations of breakfast cereal. The soldier looks up and down the shelves in disbelief at the meaningless mountain of choice. He is silent but his deep dissatisfaction with everyday civilian life is summed up in this single sequence.

A large part of the negative comment on the movie seems to be centred around the intentional lack of purposeful narrative, no central lead that the audience can adopt as an alter-ego, killing off recognisable faces for no plot benefit, and lack of any poetic insight into the meaning and purpose of war. Iraq is not that kind of situation.

If you want an all-conquering hero, good kicking evil, or character redemption this is not the place to look.

Real feel good film!

This film was one of the best films we have seen for a long time, it had us crying one minute then crying with laughter the next! Great for all the family.

An understated brilliant movie

An Education was the surprise of the year with a simple story of coming of age but is so well directed and acted that it becomes flawless.

A young woman is torn between the love of her life and a career anf there lies the dilema.

Caery Mulligan delivers an outstanding performance and gets her well deserved price in the awards season.

The plot follows her decission and the third part of the movie follows a fast pace and has a nice tale of redemption at the end

Masterful Film-Making Again From Tarantino!

A must see movie!
The score and direction are on a par with such past classics as Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction.
The story moves effortlessly and provides thrills at every corner!
I must give a huge round of applause to the actors who never fail to engage with their complex characters especially Brad Pitt and Christoph Waltz who are the two best actors, in my book, of 2009.
If you love Tarantino then do not delay in buying this movie!!

The Time Traveler's Wife

Overall I thought the film was a good interpretation of the book. I was a little disappointed that the sub-stories of the book just were not in the film, or completely skipped over. I won't be specific because I don't want to give the game away. I was particularly disappointed that the very end of the book was totally omitted from the film, with the film ending much earlier in time. None of this is probably helped by the fact that I had only recently read the book. Had I read the book longer ago, or, more importantly, not at all, then I think I would have liked the film more. At least nothing was invented or put in, but I felt the omissions made the film lack a certain depth. However, this is not an easy book to interpret on the screen, and overall I think a good job has been done. I enjoyed it.

Harry Potter latest film.

Loved it. Quick delivery and the product is superb just as good as being at the cinema watching it which I did prior to buying the DVD.

the best film of 2009

This film deserved more accolades than it got. It is powerful and thought provoking and, as such films should be, uncomfortable viewing. Ultimately, the film is about hope and redemption.

The Hangover

I watched this film with my husband and 2 sons (aged 19 and 21) and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I can recommend it to anyone who likes a light hearted amusing comedy. Everyone I have spoken to who has seen this film enjoyed it.

underrated

this film is amazing and up there with the great films of 2009 (in the loop, synecdoche new york, where the wild things are etc...). anyone familiar with wes anderson will recognize his style instantly, and it lends itself perfectly to this traditionally made take on roald dahl's classic novel. i wouldn't say it's a kids film. the script is quite adult in it's underlying messages, only substituting any swear words with the word 'cuss', which is a bit weird at first, and the dialogue is absolute wes anderson genius, voiced brilliantly by bill murray and jason schwartzman in particular.
it looks beautiful. it could easily have been made 50 years ago and would still look exactly like this. just goes to prove theres no need for disney 3d for a film look special, and this looks more special than anything else out there.
everything about it is awesome!
ive never written a review before but i just couldn't bear to see this films average brought down by unappreciative philistines. it makes me really sad that it seems a lot of people just don't get it. their loss.

Excellent Watson!

What a great film this is! I was hugely surprised at how good it is when I first saw it. I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and was unsure whether this would be true to the classics.

Well, as far as I am concerned, this IS the classic Holmes movie. I loved the way the relationship with Watson was portrayed, and the Victorian London imagery was a pleasure to behold. The story unfolds with magnificant charm, as mysteries unravel before our eyes, and seemingly innocuous observations become crucial to the game. There is plenty of action, some of which is portrayed almost in bullet time, with Holmes' thought processes being narrated before the actual event. It works really well.

I can't really say more without giving away spoilers. And I hate spoilers.

There must be more Holmes films made with this new cast. Not to do so would be a crime.

Incidently if you are a fan of the TV series House, you may watch this movie and see some similarities between House - Wilson and Holmes - Watson. As House was based on Holmes this is hardly a surprise!

goood buy

I per order this a 16 march and did think i would come untill after the dvd came out but it can today two days before it due out in shop i very please with the dilevery time. It was the first time i had every per order anything and i will do it again. amazon are really good with there per orders. The dvd it's slef is really good and a must buy for all twilight fans also the dvd shows you a sneek peek at the next film eclipse which look good.

I have purchased this as a Mothers Day present, it came very quickly and looks well presented, obviously I have yet to ensure it is a good DVD and watchable.

Just going to keep it simple.
As many, ive been a Fan/Supporter/Follower of MJ since Jackson 5.
Heard, Read, watched all media coverage, stories, articles etc... BUT and this is a massive 'BUT'
THERE IS NOTHING BETTER, THAT SHOWS THE REAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MICHAEL JACKSON'S CARING NATURE & HIS SPIRIT LIFTING PERSONALITY AS WELL AS RESPECT FOR OTHERS IN THE dvd 'THIS IS IT'. I BOUGHT THE TWO DISC VERSION AND HAVE NO REGRETS, I COULD WATCH IT OVER & OVER.
The main video covers interesting rehearsals, stage setup, costume design, the technology behind effects and much more. If MJ was still here the real concert would have been the greatest ever.
"The Two disc version, does"exactly what it says on the Box" The dvd concentrates on his final performance rehersals and disc Two extras include, up-close documentary with the dancers, artists & Musicians. Almost like a Credit for there work. There was a small part of me that really wanted much more from the Two disc, collectors Ed. BUT when thoughout with more understanding, it is Just The Right Content for the DVD. I had concert Tickets for the 'This Is It' Show and this dvd delivers what we would have wanted to see & not over crammed with old concert clips etc. BUT, AS I MASSIVE MJ FAN, WHAT ALL MJ FANS WOULD EXPECT FROM A TWO DISC Ed IN FUTURE COMPILATIONS IS A COMPLETE SUMMARY OF HIS LIFE FROM MOTOWN TO PREVIOUS CONCERT FOOTAGE, MAY BE SOME VIDEOS SONGS FROM"MOONWALKER" ETC AND FINISHING OFF WITH STUNNING 'THIS IS IT' FOOTAGE.
OVERALL THE TWO DISC 'THIS IS IT' DVD, ITS GREAT , SHOW MJ IN FIRST PERSON AND DIRECT, YOU CAN LITTERALLY SEE WHY HE WAS THE KING OF POP & WHY HE STILL WILL BE.

Arrived in perfect condition . All the special features are amazing . A must have for all twilight fans . You will enjoy and will never regret buying it .

Abs of steel are no good if they're still hidden under a layer of fat!

This DVD comprises 5 separate sections designed to tone and firm the stomach muscles in 10-minute bursts. The exercises are reasonably easy to follow and if you do them regularly you should end up with a toned mid-section. The problem, however, lies with the fact that you can do sit-ups until the cows come home but cardio-vascular exercise is needed if you want to lose weight. If you're overweight and want to shift some fat off your belly, this DVD is unlikely to help much. There is one section of cardio but it's just under 10 minutes long which isn't a great deal of help. This DVD will tone your stomach muscles - but, unless you're already reasonably slim, your new toned abs will be hidden unless you burn some calories through cardio and lose some weight.

Superb blu-ray

In Holland the blu-ray is already available and the quality is superb. It has a lot of very nice extra's. The commentary from director Roland Emmerich and Co-writer and composer Harald Kloser is insightfull and fun. They both make clear that this movie is not really to be taken seriously and yes, they do know that there are plotholes in this movie that are so big, Hannibal could have moved his army through it!!! And a fun fact, John Cusack and they boy who played his son did all the underwater scenes themselves, because they were better at it than the stuntmen who were innatialy hired for the job.
The deleted scenes are nice to look at, but it's also pretty clear why they are deleted. The alternate ending is also fun, it could have giving the film a totaly different ending, but again it's clear why they eventualy didn't use it. In the documentaries there is the same kind of stuff you can expect to found with every movie: Oh he is such a great director, Oh my actors are magnificent, bla bla bla.
Nothing new there. There are also some talkings heads seriously talking about the 2012 apocalypse: terrible, don't take these people serious.
And of course, the movie quality is fantastic. Crisp and clear, but don't expect the same experience as in the theater. You need at least a 50 inch television to do this film some justice.
