Review for The Hurt Locker [Blu-ray] [2008]:
Blows up in your face!! Awful!!
I watched this about 4 weeks ago having never heard of it...after about half an hour i was wondering what was actually happening, because the plot is non-existent!

Then when the scene with the posh voiced british special forces getting shot (and then saved by the americans) came along it was almost embarrassing to watch a scene like in any film! The bomb handling parts must surely be vastly unrealistic and almost offensive to those who do such a dangerous job!
Stereotypical charactors, the main guy is like maverick in top gun (without the charm, F-14 fighter jets and filmography), but worse, so much that you want to see him die because he is so annoying. There is NO SOUNDTRACK, i think there are maybe two parts with music, the rest is mostly the main guy chatting rubbish to himself. I
couldnt believe it when i heard all the media hype, and people raving about this film, has to be in my top 5 worst ever films. If i wasnt so hungover i would of drove home!

incredible delivery!
pre-ordered this DVD back in January and it was delivered this morning even though the release date isn't until Monday so that's just amazing!! made my day :)
the special features are fantastic! I'm working my way through this very moment.
having read the books first and loving them as much as I do, I was looking forward to what the films would be like and if they could do justice to the books. I always try and separate, in a way, because even great film adaptations can never be like what you see in your mind when reading a (beloved!) book...but I have to say: I loved both Twilight and New Moon. of course there's always some scene you were hoping to see on the big screen and it wasn't included but that doesn't change my sentiments. I am impatiently awaiting Eclipse....:)

Review for Band Of Brothers - HBO Complete Series [Blu-ray] [2001]:
The best at it's best!
I'm not gonna talk much about the series itself. We all know what a great show it is: extremely well-written, outstanding acting with beautiful cinematography and music.

It was great on TV, even better on DVD, but it is at it's finest when it's blue.

The transfer is a beauty. Deep blacks, wonderful contrast and wonderfully saturated colors. yeah, because it's blu-ray you can see when the focus puller missed, and some extra grain when it's extremely low light. But that's ok since only occures a couple of times. The crew of the film did a great job.

The audio is a winner. Dialogue and sound effects of highest quality perfectly mixed so it would make any Oscar winner for best sound jealous.

And the price. Even better. In Sweden it's more than twice the price. A lot more. I love UK film shopping!

Exciting and entertaining.
I came very late to this series as it has been out for a while. But I saw it as a boxed set in Blu Ray and decided to give it a try.

I found it to be very exciting and a good action thriller.I like most films with Mat Damon. He is an excellent actor and I t hink he did a lot of the action sequences himself.

I enjoyed it and would recommend it to those who like films in this genre.

Over hyped and over here....
A touch of the"George Lucas" here with the technology and the love of it taking over from the need for a tight script. I found it 20 mins too long but a good popcorn movie, not much more. Each to their own, but for pure entertainment at the cinema last year, for me"Star Trek" was much better,"Avatar" was fun, but not that much fun!

UP - Buy it!

We purchased this DVD as we have always been a fan of Disney/Pixar films for their entertainment value.

This is a heartwarming tale that we all enjoyed, (two families of children aged 2-12 and parents!)

The first part that sets the scene had the adults close to tears and the rest of the film had us giggling.

There are some funny parts, the talking dogs once you accept the idea are very funny.

As usual with Disney there is a message in there and this film is definitely one for anyone. We have now watched it several times and was a good buy!

Stunning Blu Ray Quality
I was quite surprised at how impressive the quality of this Blu Ray film set was considering the age of the original film. Closeups (facial features etc.) were stunning and far surpassed any of the DVDs I have seen of this same film. It appears to have been remastered with original digital footage.

Superb, raw, not too sci-fi. can't wait for a sequel !
I watched this film twice on transatlantic plane journeys then came home and just had to have the proper DVD experience. Its a fantastic film with twists and vision of what could happen one day.
The special effects were great, storyline was plausible in context, a kind of documentary to start with then morphing into a real drama.
Probably one of the best films i have seen in the last year.

By now, everyone knows the movie was a huge success. Being an admirer of Michael Jackson, for most of my life, I saw the movie the first day it came out, and saw it several more times after that. The movie is wonderful, without a doubt, Michael was amazing. It is so very important for people to see his raw talent, and to witness what kind, humble and gentle man he truly was.
Michael Jackson was one of the most talented entertainer of all times. I'm so glad the we, his fans, have this beautiful tribute to cherish forever.

A movie disaster
I went to see this film when released at the cinema. The special effects are second to none, unfortunately the script was probably written by the special effects teams tea lady, and it shows up big time. I'm no film critic either, and yes I can disassociate from reality, thats the fun of going to the movies, but please, if you're going to spend a hundred million dollars on special effects, try spending more than a hundred quid on the script. A disaster movie? No a disaster of a movie.

Review for Sherlock Holmes [Blu-ray] [2009]:
"A little more conversation, a little less action please - uh huh, thank yer verrr much"
The big mystery with this film is how Guy Ritchie got all the tough stuff nailed and then flunked the easy part. The character development, script and build up is all handled incredibly well. This is the usual failing of most blockbusters and is often cobbled together as an afterthought. But look here - is that real chemistry I see developing between the two leads! And there! I just laughed at an excellent aside by Jude Law! I actually feel like I want to spend a bit of time in the company of these characters.

And then...it all goes a bit haywire when the action comes in. This part should have been easy - this is Sherlock Holmes after all so no one is expecting a Transformers style duke-fest of special effects popping off left, right and centre - so all you have to do is add some gritty set pieces and lean more on mystery, intrigue and suspence. Unfortunately no one mentioned this to Guy Ritchie and apart from the stylish boxing scene the rest of the action is a mix of lame special effects (yes, that flying cog in the boatyard!), never ending fights (enough of the giant already...), improbable and pointless superfluous detours, etc.

Nearly something special and both the leads should look back on their performances with some degree of pride in what was always going to be a tough gig - making Sherlock Holmes relevant/sexy/exciting for the new generation.

Worth a watch.

Review for Mission Impossible: Ultimate Missions [Blu-ray] [1996]:
Three progressively better, solid action pictures
Coming off of the back of the viewing of the very average Blu-ray Matrix Trilogy set that I recently reviewed, this Mission Impossible Trilogy Blu-ray set felt like a bit of light relief to be honest. It's really rather good, and quite unlike 99% of other motion picture trilogies in many respects. Let me break it down for you.

Mission Impossible:

This slightly claustrophobic 1996 release seems strangely low-key by modern day standards. The majority of the film played out in confined areas, lift-shafts, ventilation systems, sealed rooms - even the finale involves a train going into a tunnel. All of the action and major (very impressive) CGI elements happen in just the 3 to 4 main action scenes in the movie - reminiscent perhaps of 2006's Casino Royale in that respect, but like Casino Royale they are all handled really beautifully.

It's a rather simple cloak and dagger style spy/espionage picture, with it's fair share of twists and turns to keep you guessing what's coming next. In truth it's not particularly great and is maybe lacking in a few more human elements, like nearly all 90's action movies it's aged alarmingly quickly - but it's still a solid beginning to the Mission Impossible film universe. Cruise does just about enough to keep the momentum going with his enigmatic performance, and excels in doing his own stunt work, which still looks great. Baring in mind how long ago this film was made now, the several CGI mask-removal scenes have held up splendidly, as has the entire finale involving the CGI elements of the helicopter and train hurtling along Channel Tunnel - the sense of pure danger and speed in a few of the scenes is incredible, it's hard to think of another mid-nineties action movie where the CGI and stunt-work looks as convincing as it would in modern day movie making.

Mission Impossible II:

Now this is where things get interesting. This film bears almost no resemblance to it predecessor, and I mean in every way, literally. Even Cruise himself is different enough so as to make you not really associate the Ethan Hunt of MI:I with the Ethan Hunt of MI:II. The influence of 'The Matrix' on this film is rather unavoidable when viewing the stunt-work, but it's all the better for that fact - and some would say that the action sequences in this film are more convincing than of any shown in 'The Matrix'. The film starts out with the memorable shot of Ethan Hunt climbing a sheer rock-face with his bare hands. I don't know what they used, be it scaffolding or platforms beneath Tom Cruise to give you the impression of an impending free-fall - but all I know is that if you suffer from vertigo the scene will make you feel rather ill.

This picture is helped greatly by the aligning of a love interest with Tom Cruise - in the form of the lovely English actress, Thandie Newton, right from the get-go. It does bring a more human element to Cruise's performance - this time with the viewer feeling that Ethan Hunt has something to lose. The main plot in involves a much used device - a produced virus, with the villain of the piece having access to an antidote.

John Woo's style of key slow-motion moments, graceful stunt choreography, well rehearsed vehicular stunts and more all looks great - even if I did cringe at the sight of a white dove. Again, it's not the best film ever, but it's highly enjoyable and harmless fun all the same.

Mission Impossible III:

The third movie is always the worst, right? Wrong, this time J.J. Abrams(Alias/Star Trek XI/Lost)is at the helm and does a great job in making this easily the biggest and best Mission Impossible yet. The casting in particular is strong, and succeeds in making the Mission Impossible universe all the richer, colourful and more varied - especially when compared to the original, MI:I. A wife and a civilian life are now a part of Ethan Hunt's world, Hunt having taken up a job now training future operatives. In true Hollywood tradition, Hunt is pulled back in one more time to extract a IMF operative taken captive in Berlin. A chain of events leads Ethan Hunt into the firing line of a smoking gun named 'The Rabbits Foot'. Further complications coming in the form of Philip Seymour Hoffman's wonderfully despicable character, 'Owen Davian', whom after Ethan Hunt makes a fool of him in an early scene, is then hell bent on ruining Hunt's life by kidnapping Hunt's new wife, Julia, and making Hunt suffer. The likes of Laurence Fishburne, Maggie Q, John Rhys Mayers and Simon Pegg flesh out the characters. With Pegg's (practically a) cameo role as 'Benji' being one of the many highlights - truthfully, I wonder how many gigs that role got him?

Again the stuntwork and CGI is brilliantly executed, with an action scene played out across a bridge almost as good as any action scene you'll see outside a Bond/Bourne movie - talk about exciting. That's without mentioning the extraction action scene in the first act played out in Berlin, featuring helicopters going in between the rotating arms of mills on a mill farm. At 126 mins long, it does almost outstay it's welcome, with the scenes in China just about managing to keep you interested right up until the end, with another fine Simon Pegg cameo.

The Blu-ray set:

Ah, now here's where my only criticism lies with this set. the first and second films are not going to be the Blu-ray's you would want to show off your HD telly with. Neither film has the definition to make any long shots or large stunt scenes look particularly detailed. The first in particular is grainy, with lots of noise visible in the picture and a lack of colour. The second is much better on those issues, but still lacks the sharpness to really look that great. They're both still better than the DVD editions, with the facial close-ups showing alot more detail, obviously. The third film is fine, a good transfer, good colours and details - but is by no means 'The Dark Knight'.

The extras are good across all three films, I've watched all of them, with plenty on each disc to keep you watching for another hour and a half after the main feature has ended. The first two films are one Blu-ray each, but the third is a 2X Blu-ray affair, with even more extra features.

£14.99? bargain.

Summary:

A hugely enjoyable trilogy of films, it's easy to brand these movies as just a star vehicle for Tom Cruise - which, in all honesty they may well be, BUT the way in which each film improves on the last and the growth in cast tends to tell you otherwise. The only reason not to purchase this set is if you already own them all on DVD.

What awaits in Mission Impossible IV?

Review for Leon - The Director's Cut [Blu-ray] [1994]:
Abismal
After reading all these rabid reviews and seeing it listed as one of the greatest films of all time i had huge expectations and tried unbelieveably hard to enjoy this but all i saw was an awful script and some of the most retarded characters imagineable. Every single person bar the little girl maatilda (portman)were either stereotypical, totally unbelieveable or just make you wonder what was the writer smoking. I actually laughed at vast swathes of this film it was so so so so poor, its essentially starship troopers level of acting. And from what I've read the only redeeming aspects of this film, the lolita style relationship between leon (reno) and matilda, wasnt even in the original! If you havn't seen this before whatever you do do not buy it! The fact that i paid money for this makes me want to cry!

Review for Ip Man [Blu-ray] [2008]:
Best Kung-Fu flick in a long time
I stumbled upon this blu-ray at the video store and almost didn't get it since it was hyped as the"film about Bruce-Lee's master". I thought it was just going to be a cheaply made and dumb kung fu flick riding the coat tails of Bruce's success. What I got instead was one of the best films I have seen all year, kung fu or no. The film is very well made, the emotional aspects very well acted out and integrated throughout the film. The characters are all very believable and IP Man is definitely the people's hero.

The film and story in itself is just a treat to watch as we follow Master IP Man's life just before and during World War II including the Japanese occupation. The Kung Fu fight scenes are just incredible. I had to watch each one a number of times because they were so cool. I can't fault anything about the choreography or the style as it is just fantastic from start to finish. Donnie Yen does an excellent acting job and shines in the fight scenes.

The film makes you feel good, although some of the fight scenes are a bit brutal and bloody. In the end, it turned out to be a movie that I am going to buy.

The blu-ray has great picture quality and great sound. Neither are reference quality but still worth the blu-ray. The story is what will induce you to buy this epic film though.

The Best Modern Epic to date.
Gladiator is a masterpiece and here's why, The film sees Russel crowe who acts the main caracter Maximus a Roman general who, after acts of betrayal is arrested and sentanced to death, he free's himself from capture and after many emotional events becomes enslaved and and bought as an illeagal Gladiator. Pro's:

It is a masterpiece of cinema

the camera work is breathtaking

the efects were ahead of thier time and still look fantastic 11years later
