Amazon.co.uk Reviewfor The Debt [Blu-ray][Region Free]:
<em>The Debt</em> fuses physical and moral peril as it fuses past and present. In the contemporary half of the story, ex-Mossad agent Rachel Singer (Helen Mirren) tells and retells the story of how she and her fellow agents David Peretz (Ciarán Hinds, <em>Rome</em>) and Stephan Gold (Tom Wilkinson, <em>In the Bedroom</em>) captured and killed a Nazi war criminal. But in flashbacks to Cold War East Berlin, younger versions of Rachel, David, and Stephan (Jessica Chastain, Sam Worthington, and Marton Csokas, respectively) play out a significantly different series of events--and the gap between past and present takes its toll on all three in different (and in one case gut-wrenching) ways. Though Mirren, Hinds, and Wilkinson are a powerhouse trio, it's the Cold War scenes that take hold of the viewer. Jesper Christensen (as the Nazi) invests his conversations with Chastain and Worthington with silky insinuation and taunting contempt, building a devastating suspense. Fans accustomed to Worthington in his action-movie roles (<em>Avatar</em>, <em>Clash of the Titans</em>) will be surprised by the gentle vulnerability he shows here, but it's Chastain (<em>The Tree of Life</em>) who captures the movie's emotional core. She and Mirren perform a strange collaboration that can only happen in the movies, building a fierce and brittle woman out of their complementary performances. <em>--Bret Fetzer</em>

Amazon.co.uk Reviewfor Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn - Triple Play (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy)[Region Free]:
<em>The Adventures of Tintin</em> follows the exciting exploits of a young reporter, his dog, a sea captain with a drinking problem, and a couple of bumbling Interpol detectives as they travel from Europe to the Sahara and Morocco in pursuit of a pickpocket, model-ship collectors and long-lost treasure. Steven Spielberg's and Peter Jackson's long-awaited full-length film, based on the original <em>Tintin</em> comics by Hergé, combines the stories"<em>The Secret of the Unicorn</em>,""<em>Red Rackham's Treasure</em>," and"<em>The Crab with the Golden Claws</em>" into a generally fast-paced adventure that feels just a tad too long. <br /><br />The individual stories and the characters Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock, and Thompson and Thomson are all quite faithfully represented. The motion-capture animation is similar to that of <em>Polar Express</em> and is both fascinating and a bit odd at times. As in the comics themselves, the characters are highly stylized and instantly recognizable, but Tintin's facial expression is eerily stoic and there's a hint of strangeness that's hard to put a finger on. Snowy is delightfully funny to watch, though he is a bit fluffier than in the original comics, and the real animation standouts are the secondary characters like Thompson and Thomson and Captain Haddock, who somehow seem absolutely perfect.<br /><br />Devoted fans will revel in the abundance of small details that reference the comics and suggest a true love for <em>Tintin</em> on the filmmakers' parts, but even viewers who don't know a thing about the comics will thoroughly enjoy this exciting adventure. (Suitable for ages 7 and older) --Tami Horiuchi<br />

Amazon.co.uk Reviewfor Sanctum (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray)[Region Free]:
If there's an undersea adventure with high-tech equipment, macho posturing, and lots of underwater photography, you know James Cameron must be swimming around the vicinity. Add the fact that <em>Sanctum</em> was released to theaters in 3-D, and it's clinched. Cameron served as executive producer to this crazy tale of a cave-diving expedition forced to improvise when a typhoon inundates their New Guinea location. (The film, shot in Australia, is allegedly based on a true event by co-screenwriter Andrew Wight, but it might be safe to conclude that the original incident was a jumping-off point for the high melodrama on display here.) A globetrotting billionaire (Ioan Gruffudd, of <em>Fantastic Four</em>) is underwriting this exploration of a hidden cave maze, which explains why he gets to bring his girlfriend (Alice Parkinson) along. As a measure of their thrill-seeking habits, we are told they met on an Everest climb. The cave-diving boss is a crusty old pro (Richard Roxburgh), who is rough on his underlings and even rougher on his teenage son (Rhys Wakefield); naturally, the cataclysm that follows will be an occasion for some extreme father-son fence mending. As cornball as these elements are, and as generally toneless as director Alister Grierson's ear is with the dialogue scenes, <em>Sanctum</em> does work up some bona fide thrills: the sheer power of water is unleashed at a few memorable spots, as is the panic of losing an oxygen tank at a crucial moment. It's also pretty brutal, with a steep body count and a few grotesque bits of bodily injury. It ought to be easy to dismiss <em>Sanctum</em> as a silly piece of boy's adventure, but--curse you, Cameron!--one must admit that the thing is awfully effective. <em>--Robert Horton</em>

Amazon.co.uk Reviewfor Back to the Future Trilogy [Blu-ray]:
Superlatives and the Back To The Future trilogy are rarely far apart. With good reason, too. Here’s as complete a science fiction trilogy that you’re ever likely to see, one unsullied by unnecessary extra sequels, and instead standing proud as a genuinely terrific trio of films.
The highlight? You have to hand that to the first film, one of the most perfectly complete blockbuster movies of the past few decades. Brilliantly constructed and exceptionally executed, it’s exciting, funny, imaginative and stands up extremely well to repeated viewings.
But then so do the second and third films in the Back To The Future trilogy, too. The second is arguably the most disjointed, but then it has the most narrative work to do. Picking up directly after the first movie, it covers a heck of a lot of ground, and, in spite of one or two problems, it’s nonetheless a compelling movie in its own right. The third, meanwhile, is an underrated delight, that tails the trilogy with exceptional style.
Accompanying the films is a collection of extras that genuinely dig a bit deeper, and most notably include the infamous test footage of Eric Stoltz in the role of Marty McFly, before he was replaced by Michael J Fox five weeks into production.
Crucially, though, the Back To The Future trilogy has never looked better. And bundled with a package of supplements that offer terrific added value, this is a must-buy Blu-ray collection. -- Jon Foster

Amazon.co.uk Reviewfor Band Of Brothers: Complete HBO Series (Commemorative 6-Disc Gift Set In Tin Box) [Blu-ray]:
A genuinely epic achievement, the 10-part World War II drama Band of Brothers is a television series that makes big-screen Hollywood war movies look small in comparison. Based on the book by historian Stephen Ambrose, the series follows the US 101st Airborne Division's"Easy" E-Company from initial training through D-Day and across Holland, Belgium, Germany and Austria until the end of the war. Coproduced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series take its initial inspiration from Saving Private Ryan and borrows that film's visceral visual approach to combat scenes using hand-held camerawork and de-saturated photography. But where Band of Brothers excels is in its scrupulous attention to the realities of military life (retired US Marine Captain Dale Dye, who also co-stars, is the man to credit).
After the high drama of the parachute drop on D-Day, Easy's greatest trial comes during the Battle of the Bulge, when they are besieged at Bastogne in the depths of winter. In one of the most harrowing and credible depictions of war ever committed to film we see the men enduring the repeated artillery attacks of the German forces and experience, if only vicariously, some of the sheer terror of the assault, while being humbled by the soldiers' courage and determination. Such feelings are enhanced by the series' masterstroke--bookend interviews with the surviving members of Easy Company, who talk with barely suppressed emotion of the experiences we see recreated. The endorsement of these veterans elevates Band of Brothers beyond any mere"war film"--its extraordinary achievement is that it shows the horror and savagery of war without gloss or jingoism, and yet celebrates the fraternal bonds and dogged heroism of the men who fought.
On the DVD: Band of Brothers arrives handsomely packaged in a six-disc box set with two episodes on each of the first five discs. Sound (Dolby 5.1) and picture (1.78:1 widescreen) only enhance the series' epic credentials. Disc 6 contains all the extras, the meatiest of which is the marvellous 80-minute documentary"We Stand Alone Together" about the real men of Easy Company. There's also a first-rate, genuinely interesting 30-minute"making of" feature about actor boot camp, visual effects and blowing up fake trees among many other things. This is complemented by actor Ron Livingston's revealing Video Diaries of boot camp. Additionally there's a"Who's Who" section and footage of the HBO premiere at Utah Beach, plus a TV spot for car company Jeep. -- Mark Walker

Amazon.co.uk Reviewfor Johnny English Reborn - Triple Play (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy):
Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as the slightly hapless, but still remarkably effective secret agent Johnny English in <em>Johnny English Reborn</em>. Atkinson's deadpan slapstick delivery is in fine form in this sequel to 2003's <em>Johnny English</em>. The sequel actually delivers as an excellent action film, with outstanding cinematography showcasing scenes as diverse as Hong Kong and Tibet, as well as a comedy along the lines of <em>Get Smart</em>. <em>Johnny English Reborn</em> opens in the mountains of Tibet, where a disgraced English has been living in a monastery, learning focus, attentiveness, and martial arts of the avoidance rather than of the über-attack variety. He is suddenly called back into action to serve Her Majesty in the spy agency MI-7, to help take down an international ring of assassins. English is reluctant at first, but then jumps at the chance to avenge the mistakes he made years earlier, and to deploy his new arsenal of skills. <em>Johnny English</em> is a very crisply directed, well-written, and even unpredictable comedy-action spoof, and it just might make fans out of Rowan Atkinson doubters. The timing of the gags is really well done, and Atkinson seems game for just about anything. He is also surrounded by a splendid supporting cast. Gillian Anderson plays the severe new head of MI-7, Pamela, with crisp assurance. Rosamund Pike is the comely Kate, a potential love interest for Agent English. And Daniel Kaluuya plays newbie Agent Tucker, who is assigned to accompany English, and who brings skills (and baggage) of his own. Director Oliver Parker, known mostly for his remakes of classics like <em>Othello</em> and <em>The Importance of Being Earnest</em>, brings a sure vision and entertaining pace to <em>Johnny English Reborn</em>. There's some crude humor, mostly in the form of blows to various groins, but there's no bad language or over-the-top grossness, so <em>Johnny English Reborn</em> is suitable for older kids and teens. --<em>A.T. Hurley</em>
