Review for Between the Lines: Complete BBC Series 1-3 Box Set (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
Breat British Drama !
Between the Lines was a show which reflected British television's attitude to the police in the Thatcher years - namely, that the police are brutal, corrupt and fascist. If the show was merely about corrupt officers, then it could have made for gripping drama, but it had a heavy political agenda so corruption was always from up on high and institutionalised. One or two episodes of this might have been gripping, but it was constant and often Neil Pearson's character would often act as an apologist for the criminals. One of the more ludicrous episodes featured Pete Postlethwaite as a senior Metropolitan Police commander putting down a riot (by good lefties or course) which he agitated and he ends up quoting the speech made in the Falklands War. But apart from the student level politics, the show gained notoriety and earned the nickname Between the Loins for its preponderance for sex scenes bang on the stroke of the 9 oclock watershed. Any chance for Pearson to drop his trousers (but always in a sensitive way) and he'd grab it. Sometimes it seemed he'd abandon a case to get some more sex...can't say I blame him. This is every episode of this fantastic show - all in one box. Buy it.

Review for Spider-Man 3 (2 Disc Special Edition) Limited Edition Sleeve Design and Slipcase (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk) [2007]:
I mainly just wanted to point out that I have had trouble with this dvd and the fact that it skips whole chapters.
I dont know if anyone else has had this trouble. Be cautious on buying this cheap dvd.
In terms of the film, loved one and two but this one just seems to erase the ending of the last one, was particularly disappointed with the fact that they didnt continue the green goblin story despite setting up the story line at the end of the last one

Review for Spooks: Complete BBC Series 1-5 (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):

Is the series getting tired?
Nice to have all five series together, even if overpriced, but is it me or is the series getting a bit tired? Like so many good series they seem to be trying too hard as time goes on, with more and more farfetched plots; think the last series of Ally Macbeal for example. As an aside, I don't expect realism from this sort of series but I would hope that MI5 has somewhat more than the skeleton staff portrayed here, with 5-6 people to save the country each week.

Not what I expected
I have been a fan since the series began and have all 5 seasons on DVD plus TV movies. I eagerly awaited this DVD, but found it considerably less interesting, in story terms, than the original series or the novels. I found the strong religious theme of the first half **very** offputting, and the story did not even seem to relate to anything in the Babylon 5 universe so far. The attempt to tell two stories in 69 minutes means that neither is well developed, and a single story based on filling in the story arc would have been a better idea.33
Review for David Leadbetter : The Complete Collection - 8 Disc Box Set (Exclusive To Amazon.co.uk):
My favourite DVD is this series is the 'Taking it to the Course' one where David accompanies an Amatuer Golfer and watches him playing holes then gives him tips on what shots he should hit and where he should play balls. Basically its a course management DVD and it does prove handy to golfers and high handicap golfers should probably view it to see what they should be thinking when they are on the tee or the fairway or in the rough.
My least favourite DVD is probably 'The Swing' where David meets a 11 or 12 Handicap Golfer and tries to teach him how to play golf. The guy being off a low teen handicap is a good golfer so basically its only tweaking to improve his swing and game. I find myself insulted a bit by the DVD and wished David would have picked a novice or much higher handicap golfer to work on.
This set features all the videos David has done and transfered to one DVD set. Some of the material in the set is quite dated and old hat now hence my reason for marking it down. Also there is another box set out called 'David Leadbetter Interactive' which is all new material and uses state of the art technology and presentation to transfer across David's teaching. It also comes with PC software for analysing videos of your own Golf swing and seeing where you are going wrong and suggests drills or exercises for you to try. It makes this boxset almost prehistoric and extinct. Okay its £10 more expensive but the Golf software is worth £70 on its own. Look for that boxset before buying this one.

David Leadbetter the Best Coach in Golf
I bought this boxset last year and have watched it throughly and watched a few DVDs a couple of times to try and get ideas for my own game. David Leadbetter is the best Coach in Golf and has coached many Major Winning Tour Professionals. This 8 DVD set covers every aspect of Golf and in some of the DVDs material is re-told or repeated. My favourite DVD is this series is the 'Taking it to the Course' one where David accompanies an Amatuer Golfer and watches him playing holes then gives him tips on what shots he should hit and where he should play balls. Review for Blake's 7 - Limited Edition Complete 20 Disc Box Set (Exclusive To Amazon.co.uk):
By failure I don't mean that the show was rubbish it's just that it arrived at a time when Star Wars had just been released and it couldn't compete, Doctor Who had been there since 1963 and had cemented it's position as Britain's best loved sci-fi programme so Blake's 7 had to acknowledge it's lesser cousin status from the very beginning.
The programme however did things that Doctor Who, Star Trek and most others would never have dreamed of, it gave us a disfunctional crew as 'heroes', we had terrorists, murderers, rapists, thiefs, smugglers, bullies and cowards and a total paranoid in the brilliant character of Avon who didn't give a damn about the rest of them. The lead villains were just sick psycopaths that just existed to be as evil as possible and bring down Blake's crew.
The crowning glory for Blake's 7 is these wonderful characters played by actors that gave it their all despite the primitive effects and some really terrible episodes, and of course it gave us a never to be forgotten final episode where the entire crew loses it's fight with the federation and ends on a world famous freeze frame, this episode alone is the main reason that Blake's 7 is remembered as it has become a piece of iconic television, the finest end to a television series ever, no happy endings here.
This boxset is a wasted opportunity however in that the episode prints appear to have been sourced from the VHS releases of the series from the 1990's, there has been no effort to remaster the pictures or sound and the extras, what there is of them were lifted directly from the single series boxsets. I bought this set because I like the show and it's cheaper than the four seperate seasons but I almost wish I had stuck with my old video tapes of the episodes because despite the advantages of DVD there is no difference.

This Set Has Failed To Use The Advantages Of The DVD Format.
Blake's 7 is a very entertaining sci-fi programme but is destined to remain forever in the shadow of Doctor Who, in the final analysis Doctor Who was a huge success and Blake's 7 was a failure.By failure I don't mean that the show was rubbish it's just that it arrived at a time when Star Wars had just been released and it couldn't compete, Doctor Who had been there since 1963 and had cemented it's position as Britain's best loved sci-fi programme so Blake's 7 had to acknowledge it's lesser cousin status from the very beginning.

Review for The Hunger - Complete Series 2 Box Set (Exclusive To Amazon.co.uk):
The first episode here Sanctuary introduces David Bowie as a performance artist, he returns to host the rest of the series. There are some great episodes, Replacements, Wrath of God, The Suction Method (which is both funny and erotic), Week Woman, The Falling Man, Sin Seer and a couple of others stand out; most of the others are good but lack a little something special.
Once again it features work by some of the best fantasy writers. This series features stories by Poppy Z.Brite, Tanith Lee and Ramsey Campbell.
This series is probably darker than the first one and the tales are still visually brilliant but, many years down the line, almost all of my favourite episodes can be found in the superb first series. That said, as a whole the Hunger was a great piece of innovative television and is well worth watching again.
N.B. The documentary here is the same as that on the series 1 disc.

Good, but not quite up to the standard of the first series
The second series of Ridley and Tony Scott's TV series is good but in comparison to the first series, in my opinion, it falls a little short. The first episode here Sanctuary introduces David Bowie as a performance artist, he returns to host the rest of the series. Review for Fantasy Island : Complete Season 1 (4 Disc Box Set) (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
Roarke was known for his white suit and cultured demeanor, and was initially accompanied by an energetic sidekick, Tattoo, played by the diminutive Hervé Villechaize. Tattoo would run up the main bell tower to ring the bell and shout"The plane! The plane!" to announce the arrival of a new set of guests at the beginning of each episode. This line, shown at the beginning of the show's credits, became an unlikely catchphrase because of Villechaize's spirited delivery and French accent (he actually pronounced it,"De plane! De plane!"). In later seasons, he would arrive in his personal go-cart, sized for him, and recklessly drive to join Roarke for the visitor reception while staff scrambled to get out of his way. From 1980 to 1982, Wendy Schaal joined the cast as another assistant named Julie. In an highly unpopular move with fans, the producers fired Villechaize from the series before the 1983-1984 season (which ended up being its last) and Tattoo was replaced by a more sedate butler type named Lawrence, played by Christopher Hewett. Lawrence's personality was exactly the opposite of Tattoo's in many ways. For instance, Lawrence was also responsible for the bell ringing, but instead of climbing to the tower he simply pushed a button outside to have the bell ring automatically.
Roarke would then welcome his guests by lifting his glass and saying:"My dear guests, I am Mr. Roarke, your host. Welcome to Fantasy Island.".
The usual format of each episode consisted of an introduction in which Roarke would describe to Tattoo (or another assistant) the nature of each person's fantasy, usually with a cryptic comment suggesting the person's fantasy will not turn out as they expected. The episode would then alternate between two or three independent storylines as the guests experienced their fantasies and interacted with Roarke. Often, the fantasies would turn out to be morality lessons for the guests, sometimes to the point of putting their lives at risk, only to have Roarke step in at the last minute and reveal the deception. It is mentioned a few times that a condition of visiting Fantasy Island is that guests never reveal what goes on there. A small number of guests decided to make the irrevocable choice to stay permanently, living out their fantasy until death; one such person was an actor who'd been in a Tarzan-type TV series in the 1960s.
Complete 1st season here. I hope they release all the others soon.

Review for Fantasy Island : Complete Season 1 (4 Disc Box Set) (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
TV from the golden age
Before it became a long-running original television show, Fantasy Island was introduced to viewers in 1977 through two highly-rated made-for-television films in which Mr. Roarke and Tattoo played relatively minor roles. Airing from 1978 to 1984, the original series starred Ricardo Montalban as Mr. Roarke, the enigmatic overseer of a mysterious island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, where people from all walks of life could come and live out their fantasies, albeit for a price.Roarke was known for his white suit and cultured demeanor, and was initially accompanied by an energetic sidekick, Tattoo, played by the diminutive Hervé Villechaize. Tattoo would run up the main bell tower to ring the bell and shout"The plane! The plane!" to announce the arrival of a new set of guests at the beginning of each episode. Review for Doctor Who: Complete BBC Series 2 - Limited Edition 'Cyberman Head' Box Set with Lenticular Postcard (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk) [2005]:
STORIES
The Christmas Invasion. It had all the elements of a Christmas story, cheese, action and robot santas. If you could bear the cheese part, this story went down as well as your roast potatoes with Christmas dinner, it worked as a one off and as an introduction to the new Doctor, though comparing it to the later stories it comes up a bit short.
New Earth. Great start to the new series. The Cat Nurses are great and, of course, Cassandra is back. It's the first real chance to see the new Doctor and Rose working together and Billie does a wonderful job as Rose being possessed by Cassandra.
Tooth and Claw. Too much forced humour between The Doctor and Rose, but otherwise a really good traditional story.
School Reunion. The return of Sarah Jane and K9 could have overshadowed a story in lesser hands, but the story here, featuring the great Anthony Head, holds its own against the backdrop of having one of Doctor Who's greatest assistants return. The fighting between Rose and Sarah Jane is classic.
The Girl In The Fireplace. An emotional rollercoaster and clockwork droids make this one of the best stories this season. Great acting all around, Mickey being useful and The Doctor showing his feelings.
Rise Of The Cybermen/The Age Of Steel . They're back. I've always loved the Cybermen and the team have done them justice in their new guise. Nice that they didn't tread over the existing origins by creating a new race of Cybermen too. Perhaps we'll see the originals battling these new ones someday?
The Idiot Lantern. Possibly the worst of this season's stories, its still entertaining, though not as well written as the rest.
The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit. Sound effects from Doom (didn't anyone else notice this?) and the funny named Ood make up a tightly scripted 2-parter that really keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way through. Probably the most frightening story of the series.
Love and Monsters. Doctor Who without the Doctor? It shouldn't work, but it does. Despite the monster being created by a Blue Peter winner, the story is full of humour and good ideas. One of the weaker ones compared to the rest of the series though.
Fear Her. Great idea, but for some reason the story felt a bit rushed.
Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday. A fans idea of heaven. Possibly not enough actual battling, but aside from that it's a case of saving the best till last, and what an emotional climax.
THE SET
Series 2 manages to outdo the first series on all attempts, and the extras here do the same. Video diaries (Tennant promises more this year) . More episodes of Confidential take us behind the scenes of the episodes and how they come up with all the ideas. Commentaries give us another view of each episode, some of which are more entertaining than the episodes themselves! It makes the whole package much better value than those single disc versions with their lack of any extras.
The box itself is an accurate model of a Cyberman head. Many people have already pointed out how this is only held on by a small amount of glue, but mine has been on and off of the shelf a lot as well as being handled by my Doctor-who obessed 3 year old daughter and it's still in good shape.
At the end of the day, you still get the same package inside, but for a few pounds more you get the Cyberman box on top, so it's still worth getting. That said, the words `Limited Edition' seem to mean nothing when you think that this set is still available!

Review for Doctor Who: Complete BBC Series 2 - Limited Edition 'Cyberman Head' Box Set with Lenticular Postcard (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk) [2005]:
Stellar Performances
I was as petrified as everyone else of a new Doctor spoiling what had been a fantastic run of new Doctor Who stories featuring Christopher Ecclestone. But I shouldn't have worried, David Tennant took the reigns and made the character his own almost straight away. I say almost, because there were times during The Christmas Invasion that I gritted my teeth, particularly the shoehorning in of an Arthur Dent reference, but the series after that just got better and better.STORIES

The first of these takes us back to the Willaim Hartnell era - The Dalek Invasion of Earth. Set in the twenty-second century, the Daleks have subjugated the Earth's population with brainwashed Robomen. This was the second Dalek story that was made and is one of the best stories of the Hartnell era. If you can overlook the well-dated effects, there is much to admire in the tale. There is a moody build up in episode 1, culminating with one of the series most famous scenes - a Dalek rising up out of the River Thames. We also see the Daleks portrayed as ruthless fascists, conquering and enslaving. This, made in 1964, must have made quite an impression on the viewing public, with memories of the Second World War still fresh in the minds of many. It is a fine story, and watch out for an emotional farewell scene at the end of episode 6.
The second story, Genesis of the Daleks, has to be a candidate for the best Doctor Who story ever. It is only Tom Baker's fourth story as the Time Lord but he has already firmly established in the role. Indeed, I think that here, he gives one of his best ever performances in his long tenure as the Doctor, and is ably supported by the excellent Liz Sladen and Ian Marter. The Time Lords send the Doctor on a mission to avert the creation of the Daleks, or at least slow them down in some way. What follows is a dark, atmospheric tale, with the Doctor having to battle with his conscience over his actions. This story marks the debut of Dalek creator Davros, superbly played by Michael Wisher, and backed up by Peter Myles as the sinister, sadistic Nyder. Both give chilling performances and it all adds up to a strong story.
The third story, from the fifth Doctor's era is entitled `Resurrection of the Daleks.' I'm a fan of Peter Davison's Doctor, but I'm afraid that I find this story to be a bit of a disappointment. Davison, is on good form, and there are some fine scenes, but the plot seems to be a bit of a mess. We have the Daleks creating duplicates in order to invade earth. There is Davros being resurrected and seeking to discover a cure for a virus, which is lethal to the Daleks. Davros is then attempting to create a new race of Daleks who will be obedient to him. Then, suddenly we have the Daleks creating duplicates of the Doctor and his companions in order to invade Gallifrey! Terry Molloy makes his debut as Davros, and although he has an impressive go at the part, cannot match Michael Wisher's definitive performance from Genesis.
Next up, is the multi-colour Doctor - Colin Baker, in perhaps the most unusal Dalek story of them all - Revelation of the Daleks. The story successfully mixes horror and black comedy, to produce a story which is one of the highlights of Doctor Who from the Eighties. It's quite remarkable how well this story works, considering how little the Doctor and his assistant Peri actually do. There is a fine all-star cast including William Gaunt, Elanor Bron and Alexi Sayle. Terry Molloy also returns as Davros and is much more impressive, portraying Davros as an intelligent schemer, rather than a mad ranter. This is also the story which introduces us to the idea of two warring Dalek factions.
The final story in the set, is for me, one of the great classics of the original series and the best from the Seventh Doctor's era - Remembrance of the Daleks. The underrated Sylvester McCoy battles against two Dalek factions seeking to steal an all-powerful device known as the Hand of Omega. McCoy rises to the occasion and Sophie Aldred, settling into the part of Ace is impressive, (certainly a vast improvement on her predecessor!) Interestingly enough, the character of Davros is kept in the background for most of the action here, and this allows the Daleks to take centre stage.
Each of the stories is accompanied by the usual array of DVD extras, including commentaries, trailers and interviews with cast and crew. Of particular interest is a feature entitled `The Dalek Tapes' which is part of the Genesis DVD set. This feature gives insights into all the Dalek stories made during the series first run. Overall, this is fine for someone seeking to start off a DVD collection. It will give viewers, young and old, insights into the different eras of the show. Good entertainment, although marred by the lack of a story from the Pertwee years. Hopefully, when the rest of the Dalek stories are out, we can look forward to another box-set.
