Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan [2006]

Review for Borat: Cultural Learnings of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan [2006]:
I can't believe he did that!
The moment Sacha Baron Cohen wanders back into the dining room of some well to do American carrying a bag of his own excrement and then invites his 'girl friend for the night' to the meal you understand that this is a man who will happily do anything to achieve his aims = make people shocked and laugh. There is no doubt in my mind that the film is simply a number of sketches loosely bound together with a pretty rubbish story running through it. It is sure to be not to everyones taste but I did find it amusing.

Review for Father Ted - The Definitive Collection Box Set [1995]:
The best comedy about Irish priests living on a remote island ever made
A sitcom about four Catholic priests, living in a remote island community off the coast of Ireland? It doesn't sound the most promising of set-ups but Father Ted is pure comedy gold.

Brilliant from the first episode to the last, Father Ted is a laugh riot. Ted himself is a shallow, fame-seeking schemer who thinks he is too clever for his companions to appreciate him. Father Dougal is a naive idiot who simply speaks his mind ("I don't even believe in organised religion!" he says on television) and Father Jack is a degenerate drunk who does little more than sleep, shout, swear and drink. He does them brilliantly, mind. Their houselady, Mrs Doyle, is a tea and sand which obsessed woman who stands up all night in the dark by the living room door, just in case anyone fancies a cuppa.

One afternoon, some bishops visit. In the evening, Dougal wants to watch Aliens:"But it's the director's cut, Ted, with extra Aliens!" They switch on the television, as the announcer introduces an extra-long mass, in Latin. Their faces drop but instantly, to impress the bishops, they feign interest:"Great! Mass!"

Father Ted is simply one of the best sitcoms ever made. Fantastic film parodies that wouldn't seem out of place in a Simpsons episode (the NYPD Blue parody does it for me, for some reason), excellently surreal supporting characters and sheer inventive Pythonesque looniness are combined in a warm-hearted, cynical, sitcom unlike anything else. The cast embody the characters in a way that made them irreplaceable, hence the show finishing after the tragic death of the brilliant Dermot Morgan. The writing is peerless. The finished product: endless enjoyment.

Green Wing Special

Our Price: £6.98
Used Price: £4.80
New Price: £5.71

Review for Green Wing Special:
very good - but wanted more!
There are so many obsessive Green Wing fans out there, with so many different wishes for the series, that this special could never have done right by everyone. As it turns out, it's a bittersweet, and funny episode, but it does feel like it could have done with a bit of pruning. The parts with the character of Martin Dear in particular feel like they were popped in to give the actor something to do. But Statham and Joanna's scenes were genius (behold the cows), and all the love-triangle stuff with Mac and Guy is particularly funny and touching. The ending is definitely odd, and might not please all, but the 'alternative' extended ending gives a touch of hope to caromac fans...
overall, it's a quirky and mostly-satisfying way to say goodbye to a much-loved show.

Review for Dad's Army : The Complete BBC Collection:
Can anyone confirm what extras are on this set?
Can anyone who owns this set tell me if they are the same discs as the previously released series sets. Do they have the same extra's? For instance, the second series had the radio show versions of the 3 missing episodes on the previous release, along with a documentary called Missing Believed Wiped. Also I believe the Christmas Specials Set shortly coming out will have some clips from the Christmas Night with the Stars clips featuring the Dad's army cast. Are they present here? Finally, are the Christmas Specials uncut. (On the Steptoe and Son set the Christmas Specials were edited) Any information would be really appreciated...thank you.

The Cottage [2008]

Review for The Cottage [2008]:
Cracking film, but ultimately forgettable
I watched this last night and although I wasn't expecting much, it actually was one of the better films that I've seen recently.

Best described as a"dark comedy" it can almost be split into 2 parts; the first half follows 2 inept crooks who kidnap the boss's daughter Tracy (played by lad mag's favourite Jennifer Ellison). This part of the film is very funny due to the ineptitude of our 2 anti-heroes who are constantly outwitted by their feisty abductee.

The second half then moves over into more"teen slasher/horror" flick and without spoiling or giving anything away, has some genuinely surprisingly shocking & funny moments.

Jennifer Ellison herself does a reasonable job and whilst she won't win an Emmy she doesn't disgrace herself too much (although being asked to play a gobby foul-mouthed Liverpool lass who swears every other word is hardly a stretch for her I'm sure)

I found myself thoroughly enjoying this film, but ultimately it is throwaway rubbish and ultimately forgettable, (one to rent maybe?) but I would still recommend this film - it reminded me of the recent film"Severance" (with Danny Dyer) and also"Dog Soldiers" so if you enjoyed those I would expect you to enjoy this too!

Happy Gilmore [1996]

Our Price: £2.98
Used Price: £1.49

Review for Happy Gilmore [1996]:
sandlers finest moment
happy gilmore is adam sandlers finest film, a film which doesnt try to be anything other than it is,a film where sandlers character isnt annoying, examples of that being waterboy and billy maddison, this is a film where sandler plays a man that you wish the best for.
Sandler plays happy gilmore,a man with a temper which is best left hidden, but when his dream of being an ice hockey star collaspe,an anger inside is released and when he tries his hand at golf it becomes clear he has a raw talent which needs to be refined of course but his temper gets in the way more often that not and the results are electric.
The film is also notable for having ben stiller as a nurse who is a menace and the performance of chris mcdonald as the evil villain shooter mcknight.
Happy gilmore is a happy go lucky kinda film,no harm in it and plenty of great scenes,to top it all off it is funny and thats something that cant be sai of all sandlers movies, sometimes sandler is his own worst enemy in his films, not with happy gilmore though.

Peep Show - Series 1 [2003]

Our Price: £5.98

New Price: £4.24

Review for Peep Show - Series 1 [2003]:
class
season one of peep show is a case for brilliance in so many ways, its a show that uses inner monolouge in a way that american show scrubs does but extends on it further, delving deeper inside the human psyche, the show has lots of point of view shots which allows us into the characters head both through what they see and of course what they really think which isnt made obvious by the spoken words that they say,the truth is usually found in what they think.
The show centres around two flatmates, mark who is the more sensible one of the two, well i use the term loosely,he has however got the job that pays the bills and the rent and seems to be a dependable man,but his thoughts and actions at times betray that notion, jeremy on the other hand has no job, dreams of making it as a musician but is lousy at that and waits around for mark to get home from work and talk to him.
Around that lie various other characters who blend in and out of the series and all add to it,the show is laugh out loud funny and is worthy of high praise indeed,i will be getting series two soon and have high expectations on that already.

Review for Wild Hogs [2007]:
Great Movie !!
No bones about it, this is one great movie. Why ? Well for starters look at the actors. Travolta, Macy, Allen, Lawrence. No way these guys were going to turn in a bad movie. Read some bad reviews in the press about this movie. Obviously the reviews were done by people who didn't belong to the age group this movie is aimed at. Well I do, and no excuses, it's a wonderful feelgood film. Old - fashioned? maybe. But in a good way. Reminds me of the wonderful Smokey & The Bandit movies with Burt Reynolds. Give me this type of movie any day, over some of the modern CGI'd wooden acting, no heart and soul pap that's being turned out at the moment. Brilliant - 5 stars and no regrets ! Go Wild Hogs !!

This is the way a mocumentary should be done. Jeff Bridges as an aged surfer-dude was an inspired bit of casting. I've watched this with my 7 year-old daughter multiple times and we both agree it's one of our favorite animated films. Well worth owning.

Scrubs: Complete Season 2

Review for Scrubs: Complete Season 2:
So funny!

The first three seasons of Scrubs were the funniest ones for me, and of those, this one is my favorite. The characters are nicely established, each with their own quirks and foibles, yet are still fresh and exciting, while the setting and the characters' predicaments are still different and interesting with enough scope for outlandish antics. Later seasons got a little tired as the characters/jokes didn't seem to have that many new places to go. For example, how long can it be funny for Dr. Cox to call JD Joanna? Originally that was funny and you were just dying to see what name he'd come up with next and what novel way he'd think of to emasculate JD - now... well, we've pretty much heard it all before.

This season is so funny though, with sharp dialogue, still fresh characters and situations, and off-the-wall humor to throw you into fits of laughter when you least expect it. Okay, you might say that when watching a TV comedy you do 'expect' to laugh, but do you? Do you really 'expect' to? I don't. Not with most of the garbage that's thrown at us these days. So to find something that legitimately makes me laugh is a very pleasant surprise and a wonderful treat.

My favorite characters are JD, Dr. Cox (of course), the janitor, and a much underrated bit-part player - Ted, the abused lawyer. All the other characters have their moments, but you'll find the best humor comes from the interplay of these guys.

If you want an idea of what it's like - think of the friendships of Friends mixed with the squabbling of Frazier (with Niles) set in a hospital run in a Faulty Towers fashion, with Terry Gilliam's stop-motion animation replaced by the live action of the characters' daydreaming. Yep, that's Scrubs for you!

If you've never seen Scrubs, it might take a little getting used to - such an odd group of dysfunctional individuals with such 'life and death' responsibilities - but once you get the hang of what's going on, I defy you to not laugh. And every so often they do throw you a curve ball and add a little sensitivity - the odd patient does die, and not in a funny way. But those serious asides add to its allure.

Scrubs is a modern day classic - cleverly written, with endearing characters, and sharp wit. Go on, treat yourself!

Review for A Good Year [2006]:
A glass of Coin Perdu if you please...
I almost did not buy this, (as I almost didn't buy master & commander - ) because of Crowe...thinking he couldn't possibly cut the mustard in this type of film...however I was really surprised with his superb acting and the feel good vibe of the film. Was he miscast? I don't think anyone else could have filled the role as fully as he did. The flash backs of his childhood are where the real genius lie - introducing his Uncle and him as a youngster, which add depth to the story and with the ever frequent pop of wine bottles it will soon have you reaching into your wine rack.
As some reviewers have said - the story line is predictable - quite true but with such a good film does it matter? In fact the story line has subtle undertones...which emerge after repeat viewings.
My favorite characters are the duflots...especially Madame Duflot.

Four Weddings And A Funeral [1994]

Our Price: £4.98

New Price: £2.46

Review for Four Weddings And A Funeral [1994]:
Trite, tiny little film
This predictable light romantic comedy, relying on an overglossed upmarket view of romantic England impressing the Yanks was also predictable in the huge success it had. Written by a nob who'd probably sell his granny for the success he craves, (but was never going to have to) it is dire in its simplicity and its lightness. Has nothing at all about it of the style or uniqueness of Britain's best comedies, romantic or otherwise. It is more a modern misuse of the genre. It was more Harpers and Queen with laughs, it was that self conscious of its image. Its dipping into the working class funeral scene to try and give itself some depth as well just didn't work with me, as it seemed to do with others. It was just so blatantly a 'look at me America' picture, I wanted to knock its perfect teeth out. I'll waste no more words on this trifle.

A Ferrell Favourite! A Sporting Comedy!
Before watching this: My first idea was that this movie was going to be unfunny, childish humour, just another pay packet to Will Ferrell.

Watching this: When the opening credits started, I still had my doubts, but within the first 10 minutes, I had laughed a couple of times. As the film progressed, I found myself enjoying it more and more. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and thought it was a simple yet effective story line.

If you enjoyed 'Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby', you'll love this more!

In Bruges [2008]

Our Price: £14.99
New Price: £14.99

Review for In Bruges [2008]:
two parts great, one part rotten
I had high expectations of this movie given the way its sort of fell below the mainstream cinema radar and how people who had been to see it raved about it, critics and friends alike. The first two thirds of the film are very strong indeed, good character development, intrigue, well timed story telling. And funny too. My favourite part probably being the note left by the hotel owner at the bottom of the message from Harry to Ken. I thought that was a really good touch.

The relationship evolving between Ray and Chloe is crying out to be explored more, but I did find myself being lured into the camaraderie between Ray and Ken. In the first two thirds, you only hear their boss - Harry's - voice on the phone. I have to admit, I thought it was Ben Kingsley, as it would appear that Fiennes must have watched Sexy Beast over and over to copy his accent so closely.

When Fiennes enters the affray is when the film shakes of any arthouse or offbeat ambitions and just deteriorates into a tidy, Hollywood ending, all nicely wrapped up. Its a shame, as the way the film concludes undoes a lot of the good of the previous 70 minutes - its all far too tidy and contrived and just OTT, frankly. And it just didn't need to be. I felt let down that something that had started so strongly was allowed to go off the rails at the end. Hence the 3 stars. Would have been 4.5/5.0 with a less contrived ending.
