Review for Star Trek Voyager - Season 7 (Slimline Edition) [2000]:
Season 7
I thought I'd buy it as I really liked DS9 and I'm very happy I did! It definitely differs in tone being a bit more light-hearted, but it does have a few dark episodes, which tend to be the more enjoyable ones.
I very much enjoyed 'Critical Care', which focuses on The Doctor, by far the most interesting and funny character, and the episode also poses a few moral dilemmas (like 'Repentance, another great episode!), so its not just a simple kind of story. I also really liked 'Shattered', as Voyager is split into many time periods and we get to see back in the past and a little bit of the future.
The episode 'Natural Law' was really a nice episode, and finally the last ever episode 'Endgame' was both fun and enjoyable! I loved the end sequence.
The captain becomes a bit less harsh this season, and there is a rather disturbing sequence with her in a bathtub with John De Lancie ('Q').
The extra features are all good, and some are hidden too so make sure you find them all, but the disc menus, the background beeping and noise is a bit tiring after like 30 seconds, so be quick when you choose an episode!
It really is an extremely good buy, and so I'm going to buy the rest in reverse chronological order.
'Reverse the polarity of the shield' or 'Emit a tachyon pulse'. Solves anything.

Review for Star Trek Voyager - Season 3 (Slimline Edition):
Borg, Time Travel and Holodeck malfunctions! ST: Voyager - season three
Season Three was when Voyager really kicked into gear, with some great stories, aliens and effects. There is fun, 'False Profits', time travel, the two-part 'Future's End', serious goings on in 'Darkling' when the Doctor messes with his holoprogram, and Captain Janeway gets to be an action hero in 'Macrocosm', when Voyager is invaded by a nasty virus, and Janeway strips to her vest, gets sweaty (and just a little sexy) and kicks some alien butt!
In 'Warlord' Kes gets taken over by an ancient warlord, and gets some serious screen time (about time too!), and almost the first girl-on-girl Trek kiss [that was saved for DS9].
All in all, Season Three is a good one - and points to the good times to come. There is a fair smattering of stories and the two crews (Federation and Marquis) are now almost fully intergrated, the characters becoming very familiar to the viewer...and is that a romance blossoming between bad-boy Tom Paris and half-Klingon half-human Belanna Torres? It starts with the conclusion to 'Basics' and ends with the first part of 'Scorpion'. Well worth having.

Review for Star Trek - Deep Space Nine - Series 7 (Slimline Edition):
Brilliant End to an Epic Series
I never watched DS9 properly while it was on television because I was far too busy watching ST Voyager and Stargate SG-1. Only when a friend convinced me to give it a proper try did I realise just what a brilliant series DS9 is and how much it contributes to the Star Trek universe.

Season seven, while perhaps being a little less brilliant overall than seasons 4 or 5, is a brilliant endgame for the series. It seamlessly combines the tension, drama and violence of the ongoing dominion war with the exploration of both space and of the human condition - from the kind spirit of the DS9 crew, to the effects of war on those who risk their lives on the front line, to what even the most 'enlightened' will do when backed into a corner.

After the unfortunate death of Jadzia Dax, we are introduced to Ezri Dax, who proves both a blessing and a curse for the series. While providing new territory to explore, her character's journey sometimes takes up a lot of the series' focus, taking time away from other characters, such as Kira, who are pushed into the background.

Despite a good build-up, the climax in the Dominion war seems to come all too abruptly but is well executed and the battle scenes are visually stunning. Benjamin Sisko also meets his destiny with an emotional and satisfying conclusion.

All-in-all, Series 7 is a commendable mix of big action episodes and small character episodes, crafted into an almost seamless tapestry of cause and effect. The crew of DS9 should be remembered as one of Star Trek's biggest accomplishments. The series paints a better, more integral picture of the Alpha Quadrant and its powers than TNG and tells a better, stronger story than VOY.

Review for Aliens Vs Predator - Requiem - 2 Disc Ultimate Combat Edition [2007]:
Alien versus Predator 3 perhaps?
I am a HUGE Alien versus Predator fan (more Predator though) but anyway this film i found was great ... alot better as it was sole predator (as it should be) versus the alien hordes, humans and the new pred alien which is one bad ass mother.

The film has a good story line and i feel some strong charcter plots (not all though) as well as the characters there are some really kool scenes like a sewer fight where the predator is 'ambushed' in a trap he set and goes about reducing the alien ranks with plasma caster and blade. Another fav scene is the final throw down hand to hand fight between the pred alien and predator, but this should of been so much more ... it was too short and kept cutting between the fight and the townfolks demise.

Anywho i am hoping by the way the film was left at the very end, that there could be an Alien versus Predator 3 or at least a build up to Predator 3 perhaps?! ..... the humans go in search of their own big hunt against the predators?! .... one can dream.

Review for Star Trek - Deep Space Nine - Series 6 (Slimline Edition):
let war commence
The best season of deep space nine begins with the six part occupation arc continuing from the season 5 finale in which hostile forces occupy the station & its up to a small band of resistance fighters to help Starfleet forces retake the station which concludes with an epic battle. The season continues with episodes of the highest calibre with marriage in `you are concordantly invited', faked death in who `mourns for morn', survival with your worst enemy in `waltz', the fantastic `beyond the stars', the secret sub division of the federation in `inquisition', unprepared glory hungry cadets in `valiant' & the exciting & heart breaking season finale `tears of the prophets'. This season showcases the finest of ds9 & perhaps of any star trek show. It's worth every penny you pay for it particularly at this low price, snap it up.

Review for Doctor Who : The Runaway Bride (2006 Christmas Special) [2006] [2005]:
Absolutley abysmal!
Dr Who + Christmas specials = disaster, as far as I'm concerned. The recent Voyage of the Damned was atrocious and this is nearly as bad. The presence of the supremley annoying Catherine Tate makes this a real effort to sit through and god help us as she's now the new companion. The Runaway Bride (dreadful title too!) is just pureile, inane rubbish that should only appeal to juveniles and people with a low attention span. The bottom of the Dr Who barrel in my opinion. Avoid!

Review for Star Trek - Deep Space Nine - Series 5 (Slimline Edition):
Deep Space Nine, season 5
To begin with I was a fan of TNG, but I saw these boxsets, the new slimline editions, and I thought I must try a season of DS9, and I am extremely glad I did. I chose season 5, as thats what I started at on TNG, and there's no need to change routine!
Season 5 is of exceptionally good quality. Whilst I am still dubious about Avery Brooks' acting talent, the rest of the cast are very good and I have no problems here.
The episodes this season are simply amazing. On disc 1 you have some excellent episodes, one of my favourites being 'The Ship' which was my first introduction to a Vorta, (This is the first season I watched you see) and it was good.
Disc two has possibly one of the best episodes of DS9 in its entire run, Trials and Tribulations. I thought it was okay, but the forums praise this episode.
On disc 3 you have 'The Acent', which showcases Odo and Quark's relationship to a higher level, up a mountain. However the only episode I did not enjoy was on this disc; Rapture. I thought it was a bit sub-standard from what I had seen previously. But 'The Begotten' was amazing, definitely one of my favourites from this season.
Disc 4 contains a two-parter, 'In Purgatory's Shadow' and 'By Inferno's Light', where we are reintroduced to Martok and various really interesting things happen. I also enjoyed 'Doctor Bashir, I Presume?' as it showed that Alexander Siddig can act.
Disc 5 was a good disc, it had some good episodes but nothing too noteworthy, but saying this good Deep Space Nine episdoes are like excellent The Next Generation episodes. 'Business as Usual' was alright.
Now disc 6 had some amazing episodes on it. Soldiers of the Empire showed off the insides of a Klingon Bird Of Prey, and Children of Time had some harsh moral dilemmas, similarly to Blaze of Glory. And Empok Nor is an actually genuinely creepy episode, very well filmed.
Disc 7 begins the start of the mini-arc where Deep Space Nine is surrendered to the Dominion, with the first episode showing Jake's attempts to acquire a baseball card for his downhearted dad, and the second showing the surrender of Deep Space Nine, a very sad occasion.
The extra features are numerous and of good quality.

I suggest you snap this up fast; I'm off to buy season 6 as soon as possible!

Doctor Who: The War Machines [1966]

Review for Doctor Who: The War Machines [1966]:
"Bring Me the Head of Doctor Who!"
Story review only until I get a chance to see the extras.

Bit obvious to say but here we have an inadvertant template for the Unit stories of the '70's. In a Contemporary setting the Doctor is known to the Establishment and is enlisted to help them against the tank like War Machines being sent by super computer Wotan to destroy London. You could almost expect the Brigadier to pop up and reminisce about Omega!

Is Wotan possibly a German super computer as everyone keeps calling it"Votan"?

Hartnell & Jackie Lane had clearly got their working relationship down pat by now, and the story opens on a lovely moment as they share a smile about Policemen thinking the tardis is a Police Box. What a dreadful way Dodo is written out though, chucked out halfway through the story as though she'd lost the Big Brother eviction vote!

Polly and Ben make strong debuts, even though the cockney bit is laid on a little thick at times by Michael Craze. They don't have a ton of Chemistry with Great Great Uncle Bill, but in their 1st appearance this is not a problem.

The War Machines were a great design then, Budget sized tanks crossbred with the Total Survival Suit from"Kinda" which, despite being a tiny bit dated look pretty good now.

Major slip up award for Wotan demanding that"Dr Who" be brought to him!

It moves qite well over its 4 parts and although slower than the Police Box Show is now, could make a nice introduction to the '60's Who stories for current series fans.

Apart from sticking my neck out to say there will obvously be a commentary by someone, no details are yet available on extras. When a reliable source publishes something, I'll be back with a mini-update.

Review for Star Trek - Deep Space Nine - Series 4 (Slimline Edition):
Another Quality Season
Ds9 kicks off in feature film style in season 4 with"The Way of The Warrior" parts 1 and 2 interlinked. This was really well done. Putting every character including almost every guest character into the hole thing and all the characters linking the story together. Worf from"The Next Generation" makes his first appearance as a main character in this episode all the way to the final in season 7. The battle sqequences and interlinking of all the alien races and characters make this 2 parter work so well. Following this are 2 excellent episodes "The Visitor" with Jake as an old man in the future reflecting on the past that took his father. A very emotional episode indeed and the actors can be very proud of their work. The writers too."Hippocratic Oath" sees Miles and Julian captured by Jem Hadar and both characters are in disagreement as to how to deal with a complex situation. On disc 2"Indiscretion follows" on and is a very unlightly combination of focusing on Kira and Du Kat being partners to rescue some long lost crash victims. It gets more complex as the episode progreses. Nice to see ds9 using outdoor locations like the desert which was really convincing of an alien crash site in this episode.
"Little Green Men" Is a very imaginative funny episode involving Quark, Nog and Rom somhow being transported back in time to Roswell in 1947 - You know this is the real truth about Roswell, the proof is in the episode. "Starship Down" put me on edge when I saw it first as it seems 1 or more of the main character might have died becuase of the devastation done to the Defiant by the Dominion."Sword Of Kahless" sees Jadzia, Worf and Kor go in search for the legendary Sword only to have other parties purse it too. Thers a James Bond style episode"Our Man Bashir" whcih interesting and entertaining seeing the main cast members and Garak play roles or maybe there alter egos? in the Holsuite. Rom forms A Union in"Bar Association" which I like now where as in previous years I would have overlooked this kind of episode a lot. A ferengi Episode involving mostly Rom, and other Ferengi and Lita. A lot of credit should go to Max Grodenchik for playing Rom. From the episode Rom suffers a bad ear ache"Brother am I still standing?" then keels over unconcious."Lita to Quark,"Arent you going to do something?" Quark replies," Yes I am, Im going to dock his pay" Rom tries to form a Workers Union. On disc 6 is"To The Death" You never thought youd see the federation and the Dominion team up, but they do for this episode and Wyoun makes his debut in ds9. Th actor actually played a 1 off character in season 1 and severeal other characters inlcuding Brunt and Shran in Enterprise."Body Parts" sees Quark having to auction off his body parts in the second last episode of the season, Garaks in this 1 too. Then"Broken Link" is the final of season 4 and ends the Season well with but with Odo in trouble.
There are slightly more extras in season 4 than seasons 1-5. They are"Charting New Territory:DS9 Season 4", "Crew Dossier:LT Worf","Michael Westmores Aliens Season 4","DS9 Sketchbook: John Eaves"
"Bob Blackmans Designs of the Future","Jim Martin Sketchbook","DS9 Chronicles","PHOTO GALLERY" And as always semi hidden section 31 hidden files/easter eggs to find and click on involving quick few minute inteviews with cast members or producers and artists of the show.

"The Girl in the Fireplace"
David Tennant does a great job of playing Doctor Who, and of the three episodes on this disc, it's 'The Girl in the Fireplace' episode that stands out as a classic, and it's worth getting it for this episode alone. Take an original idea, add a spaceship with some unique 'windows', some clockwork.. (wait and see) and set it in 18th century France, and you have a recipe for an excellent Doctor Who. The other episodes, Tooth & Claw and School Reunion are also very good and make this three episode set highly recommended for fans of the series.

Review for Doctor Who - Series 3 Vol. 2 [2005]:
Good episodes
There are some very good episodes on this dvd and I really enjoyed them, although none of them are brilliant. In my opinion this dvd is better than the on before it.

Daleks In Manhatten/Evolution Of The Daleks= This is a usual Dalek episode with a twist because there is a Dalek Human. This double episode is very good and entertaining but the problem is ( as other reviewers have pointed out ) that the Daleks are in so many episodes that they become very over-used. This episode is set in America and the Daleks have a plan that has to do with the building of The Empire State Building ( 7/10 ).

The Lazarus Experiment= This episode is about the Doctor taking Martha back home, but a man is doing an experiment to make himself younger and the experiment fails and he occasionaly turns into a mutated monster. I didn't really enjoy this episode much but I still think it is ok ( 5/10 ).

42= This episode is about people in a spaceship hurtling towards the sun and some of the people aboard the ship are turning evil and burning people to death. This episode is exciting and intriguing and it is great to watch. I don't know why people think it is like The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, because the plot is nothing like that except that they are in a spaceship ( 7/10 ).

There are some episodes definitely worth watching on this dvd but it is not the best in the series.

Review for Star Trek Voyager - Season 1 (Slimline Edition) [1995]:
A shaky start for the USS Voyager
Before going any further I think it is worth noting that this review is not aimed at Voyager fans, who will buy it regardless of any comments. It is intended for Voyager newcomers and the basic message is -- forget being linear. If you want to see what Voyager is really like, buy seasons 3, 4 or 5 first!

Season one of ST:Voyager is a very mixed bag - from the promising to the horribly forgettable or disappointing. Voyager had a much longer teething period than either TNG or DS9 and considering the premise, did very little to push the Star Trek boundaries in its first year. Rather than approaching the show with great drama and conflict, or even with a sense of isolation the first season seemed wrapped in a candy cocoon and its stories were far too similar to TNG.

Amongst its stand-out episodes were 'Caretaker' (a promising pilot), 'Eye of the Needle' (a brilliant episode which explored the ships isolation and lust to return home), 'State of Flux' (great episode establishing the Voyager traitor) and 'Learning Curve' (another maquis episode but impressive nonetheless).

Overall, the first season of Voyager is bright, sparky and new - much like its young and inexperienced crew - but falters on its feet a number of times. It doesn't quite establish itself in this short season but does a commendable job of setting up a ship of characters which you should come to love within a few seasons time.
That doesn't change my recommendation though - spend your money on the later seasons first [3 is a good place to start] and later, once you love the show enough, see how it all began with this short but most expensive season's introduction to the Voyager crew.

Review for Red Dwarf - Just The Shows : Complete BBC Series 5-8 (6 Disc Box Set):
fantasmagorical
what a fantastic box set. 4 seasons in one go!
when I originally saw red dwarf, I missed a lot the first time around, and ended up seeing various fragmented re-runs. I never really saw any of it in the 'correct' order, and didn't have a clue what was going on - not that this really matters, its still funny. Then when they started coming out on DVD I could revisit and watch them all from the beginning.

This box set with seasons 5-8 in it is has a variety of different 'tones' to it.

Season 5 was right in the middle of when Red Dwarf was in its prime, containing some of the most popular episodes of all, and is when a lot of the running-jokes were developed, like the spacecorp directives ;)

Season 6 is highly dramatic, and ends as if it is THE END. At this point it was assumed the show was finished, and so in the final episode the entire cast was.. well, I don't want spoil it, but its one of the most gobsmacking moments in the whole dwarf thing.

Then several years later, the show is resurrected with season 7, and a whole lot of changes: only one of the script-writers remains; a shift-around of the cast (Chloe Anette joins and Chris Barrie leaves, temporarily); a new directing style with no studio audience on the recording, and a whole different feel to it. This is the season where red dwarf looses its way a little, for me.

And finishing off with season 8, they actually find Red Dwarf again (after several whole seasons with it being 'lost'!) and a great new plot-setup with them all stuck in jail, trying to survive.

So overall a great box set showing a whole lot of different sides to red dwarf. well worth the cash

Review for Doctor Who: Series 2 - Volume 1 [2005]:
Good start for the Tenth Doctor.
David Tennant gets off to a good start as the Doctor in these two episodes. In the Christmas Invasion he has to deal with the threat of the alien Sycorax and their attempts to invade earth. However, he must first recover from his recent regeneration.
Although Tennant only really comes to the fore during the last half of this adventure, he still manages to make a formidable impression. A superb debut story, with a nice twist at the end.
The second adventure, 'New Earth' acts as a sequel to previous season's 'The End of the World.' In it, the Doctor and Rose travel millions of years into the future and discover a hospital, which is run by a group of cat-like creatures. Behind the scenes there lies a dark and shocking secret, and to make matters worse, the Doctor is confronted with his old enemy Cassandra. This episode has received mixed reviews, but I found it a real creepy thriller, with good performances. The highlight has to be Billie Piper's wonderful turn as the 'possessed' Rose.
A very good start for the Tenth Doctor. Two very entertaining adventures, which are worth watching.
