Review for Doctor Who : The Runaway Bride (2006 Christmas Special) [2006] [2005]:
Another Atrocious Christmas"Special"
I don't know why every Christmas I expect it to be different, expecting Dr Who to hit the heights as shown in episodes like The Empty Child and The Doctor Dances, The Girl In The Fireplace and Blink. Yet every Christmas the same old turkey is delivered to us on Christmas Day. We don't get a special episode, we don't even get a quality episode, we get the most awful"adventure" of the entire year.

This year was quite possibly the worst with Catherine Tate being especially terrible. You can't help but spend the whole time waiting for her to do her own so-called comedy" Am I Bovvered!" routine.

Doctor who is much better than this, if only they could capture that magic more than once or twice a year.

Review for Doctor Who - Black Orchid [1982]:
Excellent value for money release of a weaker story
At one point in the commentary for 'Black Orchid', someone remarks that this story feels like Terrence Dudley just dusted off a Miss Marple-style story he had written and added the Doctor into it. This tale has no science fiction elements at all, relies on heavy levels of coincidence to power its narrative.

The change of pace both marks it out in the season and also contributes to many of its weaknesses. There is so little narrative that the production resorts to a five minute cricket sequence in the first part (more on that later!) and corridor-wandering galore.

Still, it is hard to deny that the story has a unique feel and it is nice to see the Doctor go back in time.

The commentary for this story features the entire TARDIS crew who are on fine form. As others have noted, this is much more negative than most Davison commentaries because of the four actors only Sutton has a soft spot for the story. Whilst some will feel that they are too negative about a well-loved story, the commentary is frequently very funny indeed. One highlight for me is Peter Davison's synopsis of the cricket scene where he refers to an off-scene character,"Smutty", whose friend he has been mistaken for.

I emerged from the commentary more aware of the story's faults but much more fond of the story despite them. I may no longer be able to take it seriously but in many ways that is not such a bad thing as it has increased my enjoyment of it no end.

Amongst the other extra features there are also deleted scenes, a now and then featurette looking at the locations and a featurette on the Fifth Doctor's era in the comics. This last item is the sort of thing that will either appeal to you hugely or not at all. Suffice it to say that if you enjoy Doctor Who comics it is an interesting overview of the era from Doctor Who Monthly editors and artists - if not you will likely be skipping over it.

'Black Orchid' is certainly not one of the greatest Doctor Who stories of all time but the BBC has put together a good package of extras at an excellent price.

Review for Doctor Who - The Five Doctors (25th Anniversary Edition) [1983]:
A great celebratory romp with brilliant extras.
Okay, so it's really only 3 Doctors as the original William Hartnell was dead, played here by someone who only bears a passing resemlance to him and Tom Baker declined to take part so they had to represent him with archive footage, but the story is still hugely enjoyable, fitting in umpteen old companions and monsters and a story that is still intriguing and more or less coherant. Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee are a delight to watch, each trying to upstage the other and Peter Davison more than proves himself against these old timers. In many respects, you could call this the 'ultimate' Dr Who story and is probably a good one to watch if you're new to the classic series. The extras are superb with the best 'easter egg' to have been hidden on a Dr Who DVD. An essential purchase for any Dr Who fan.

A fantastic end to a fantastic season
Being old enough to have watched Dr Who (mainly Tom Baker and then Peter Davidson) the first time, I eagerly awaited the new series. It was more than I could hahev ever hoped for and this set of episodes, showcases the talent of Christopher Eccleston.
The ending did make me shed a tear and I am sorry to see him leave but am sure that David Tennant will make a briiliant Dr.

The beeb have outdone themselves with Dr Who and I am counting the days until the next series!!

Review for Doctor Who: Series 1 - Volume 3 [2005]:
Once more into the Tardis dear friends
Into volume three of the Eccleston series, and you can see that the writers and production crew are growing in confidence, becoming almost blasé about their potential to deliver a good story. This is Dr.Who with attitude.

"The Long Game" is an ironic spin on the ability of a corporate network to exercise control over the news - hard to believe it's not reflecting on efforts of Blair's cabinet to manipulate news and demand that the BBC come to heel? Humanity is shaped and guided by its consumption of news, by the ability of the media to define what shall reach the public consciousness. Here we have news as the religion of the universe, information as the opiate liturgy of life. And only the Doctor can peel away the spin and reveal that by creating a climate of fear, the ruler of the media can manipulate people to do whatever he wishes. Beautiful performances from Simon Pegg and Tasmin Greig enliven an excellent story.

"Father's Day" has Rose return to meet her long dead father. The Doctor succumbs to her sentimental urge and is not unduly surprised to discover that, yet again, one of the monkeys has fouled up the timeline and plunged the universe into disorder. It's a good story, a bit maudlin in places, but entertaining enough.

"The Empty Child" and"The Doctor Dances" are the halves of a two-parter, neatly split by a cliff-hanger end to the earlier episode. This is a seriously good piece of drama, set in London during the Blitz, the special effects creating both a realistic atmosphere and a comic book feel, with Rose flying above London courtesy of a rogue barrage balloon. This could become an iconic image.

This is excellent: a gas-masked child roaming the streets searching for its mummy transforms science fiction into horror and creates a strong, cross-genre narrative. It's a wonderfully choreographed story, tension and humour used with commendable skill, plot and subplot woven tightly together.

All in all, the new, revived Doctor Who has proved outstanding, able to use special effects to good effect, to weld quality storytelling with a new, riskier direction and production outlook, and to present science fiction as not simply speculating about arcane scientific developments but as a vehicle for dissidence, for a fresher understanding of the contemporary world ... and an opportunity to satirise and ridicule. Eccleston, of course, is a very fine actor, and he has brought real authority back to the character, his persona beautifully complementing the dissident dynamic of the series.

Excellent production, well worth waiting for ... but then, what's time to the Doctor?

On this disc we have"The Christmas Invasion" the Christmas special from 2005, a good and exciting episode once it gets going. In"New Earth" the special effects are some of the best on TV, shame it takes so long to get going, but still a very good episode. Bit disappointed at the lack of episodes on this disc-Two!The cheek of it! I woudn't spend any more than five pounds on this, it's best to get the boxset!

Oh yes,I remember hiding behind the couch when I was a young lad,and towards the end it was almost a shame to see the doctor go the way he did,but wasnt the wait worth it,now with children of my own it isnt only a pleasure to see the doctor return but to return with such grandure and on such a big scale.....Russel T Davis is a complete genius.Chris Eccleson couldnt have played the doctor better, and as for Rose..every girls dream would be to be like her wouldnt it.I loved every episode of the new series and found it quite hard to see Chris Eccleson say his goodbyes but with almost 5 months to wait until David Tennant brings us a new doctor I can imagine the wait will be well worth it...next must come the big screen.Think of it this way..he cant fly, turn invisible, drive a batmobile, walk through walls or turn into a raging green hulk, hes just the doctor..long may he continue to save the universe....

Review for Doctor Who - The Invasion (2 Disc Set) [1968]:
"Stay tooned with Pat Troughton"
Well, do the animated episodes work or not? Yes, they work brilliantly, Troughton's mannerisms and Kevin Stoney's facial expressions are particularly well captured-just see Pat run!
Both animated episodes are fully animated and do not have a few seconds of reprise material from the orginial episodes either side cut in. It's just a shame the animated version of the titles was not used.

A strong story if a little stretched at 8 episodes, this is the best candidate for a story to rival"Tomb of the Cybermen" as the best complete Troughton! It moves along enough most of the times to compensate for any padding.

Trougton excels as Earth's self appointed defender, and is at his best playing opposite Kevin Stoney's full blooded villain. When together, both men raise their game.

Jamie gets some very good moments opposite Peter Halliday's incompetent henchman, while Zoe uses her computer skills and has many humourous moments with a girlpal.

The ultimate in Cyber-minimalism, the metallic monsters get very little screen time and even less dialogue. They are all the more effective for this and Douglas Camfield makes a handful of cybermen look like an army.

He gets real soldiers to play with too and stages some marvellous battle sequences. Unit was rarely this impressive again, a giant organisation who can whip up a helicopter in minutes! Nicholas Courtney makes his Brigadier solid and likeable. Watch also for Benton!

Main documentary"Evolution of the Invasion" is very well put together with many of those involved interviewed. Edward Burnham has an interesting story on how he wanted to play his death scene, and an unfilmed scene is recreated for us, showing how another character might have been killed off.
1 very serious omission is author Derrick Sherwin, and while we're at it is it so impossible to edit in some archive interviews with Troughton?

There is a very good featurette on how the animation was created-note the glee of the man who"played" Troughton for some motion capture!

Similarly the history of fans taping the soundtracks on reel to reel recorders is explored. Marvellous stuff except for the person who plays a bit of his prized recording of"Brian of Morbius","With audience reaction" as if it were a major historical document. GET OUT MORE!

The commentary is the usual enjoyable fare but also features the naimators appraising their work on episode 1, and Frazer Hines and Wendy Padbury assessing their animated selves for ep 4.

A return to glory for a dear old story. can we have the same for 10th Planet please?

Not quite one for all fans, unless they were very big on the new Cybermen.

Review for Doctor Who: Series 1 - Volume 1 [2005]:
This is brilliant
I feel sure that the makers of previous series of Dr Who must sit there with their jaws slack with amazement at the budget and technology available to the makers of this series. It is fantastic. One of the things I really appreciate about it is how it hangs together as a series - it bears watching again and again - spot the"Bad Wolf" references, and the conincidences throughout the series. One or two episodes are not as good as the others, but it really works as a series, and it really works as a good piece of entertainment - funny, fast-paced, action-packed and tender, and tremendously moral - with unfashionable messages of loyalty, responsibility, honesty and forgiveness too. The sad fate of the time-lords is not fully explained, and I feel sure we will find out more eventually. This doctor has a guilty secret, and I'm intrigued. The casting is superb, and Billie Piper is an absolute revelation. What a marvellous companion she makes for the Doctor. She is brave and resourceful, and her natural personality is a good foil for the Doctor. In short - marvellous!!

Review for Doctor Who - Resurrection Of The Daleks [1983]:
The evil trickery of Davros and the Daleks returns!
Barcode: 5014503110024

I found this a really intriguing serial, presenting Davros and the Daleks at their most sinister. Kicking off in the haunting industrial docklands of London's East End, the settings of this serial makes really good use of the budget to create a striking background for the plot, both in the dark, mysterious buildings of Earth to the cold futuristic designs of the space-prison. I also really like the design of the Dalek's human soldier's costumes - very stormtroopers-esque with its lacquered plastic and neon yellows.

I found the true highlight of this story to be the conflict between the various factions, Rula Lenska's Styles and her comrades holding up a valiant defence as the Daleks invade to recover Davros. Meanwhile, on the opposing side, Dalek agent Stein is a fascinating character and works really well with the Doctor as he tries to resist the Dalek control in his mind, ultimately doing the right thing in rebelling against them. Also look out for Eastenders' very own Dirty Den as Davros's attendant.

I can't go without mentioning the massive death-toll in this episode, practically everyone dies! From the Daleks spurting foam as they fall foul of the virus to the sinister policemen silently patrolling the streets, this is Doctor Who at its most morbid and I think this episode really benefits from the intensely dark feel this gives it. The Doctor even uses a gun again, in many ways harking back to previous 5th Doctor adventure, Earthshock - Resurrection of the Daleks bears much of the same militaristic feel and the similarities make sense seeing as both were written by Eric Saward.

As with many Dalek stories, the action builds slowly, the real highlight being part four where the tension reaches a dramatic climax. Davros is utilised really well in this story, completely menacing as he gradually builds a private guard and the scene where he faces the Doctor is scripted perfectly - a formidable showdown!

Of course, the other highlight of this episode aside from the Daleks is the fact it marks Tegan's final appearance. Tegan is probably my favourite of all the Doctor's companions and this scene, despite its shortness, is beautifully written, Janet Fielding putting all her emotion into the performance. It's a real tear-jerker and makes for a fitting end to her time with the Doctor. The Doctor himself seems equally distressed as he calls after her `No, you can't leave, not like this!'

As for extras, the extended and deleted scenes are pretty so-so but there's a nice interview with John Nathan-Turner and Janet Fielding as well as a fascinating 18 minute feature returning to the docklands locations.

So, all in all, while Resurrection of the Daleks might not be the best Dalek story in Who's history, it still has a lot going for it, in particular the overall look & feel of the episode and Davros is on top form. And all that leaves to say is, farewell Tegan, we will miss you - you were the best companion ever!

Review for Doctor Who - Beneath the Surface (The Silurians [1970] / The Sea Devils [1972] / Warriors of the Deep [1984]):
"The Good, the Fun & the Myrka"
A fine boxset where the Silurians & Sea Devils go on the pull for customers charitably taking their socially inpet moose of a friend Warriors of the Deep with them.

Dr Who & the Silurians is the most serious and poignant of the stories. The themes of obsession, xenophobia and greed are well expressed in a clever story with a touch of Quatermass as the invaders were on Earth before man.

Shorn of the broad comedy of his 1st story Pertwee excels as the story's moral voice, desparately trying to forge a peace between both sides. Here is a doctor who can see the bigger picture even though most other characters and at many points in the story even the viewers, do not support him.

The supporting characters offer a range of obsessives; paranoid Dr Lawrence, ruthless Dr Quinn determined to use the Silurains to make his name and the xenophobic Major Baker. The misguided patriot is a great favourite of author Malcom Hulke.

If Humanity is not at its best in this stiory, the Silurians are no better attempting to reign destruction on the upstart apes. They are a good design with body language and a special voice distracting from obvious joins in the costume.

Unit is at its most military and seems to actually have troops in this story. The cosy Unit family atmosphere is in short supply and the dependent but less chummy relationship between the Doctor and Brig serves the story well.

Nice touches are sound effects for Silurian technology & that the Doctor has difficulty writing out a chemical formula, a very naturalistic moment from Mr. Pertwee.

A little overlong but still v good stuff.

The Sea Devils is less poignant but more mobile. the Doctor is still playing Peace Ambassador but with less weight than in Silurians. the addition of the Master gives the story more humour especially with his prison scenes and relationship with the Doctor. We get an early tip off that the prison is not what it seems.

The real Royal Navy replace Unit and the use of their hardware jacks production values up several notches.

There is good support from another misguided patriot in Prison Governor Trenchard (though why anyone thought he could cope with the Master is a mystery!), long suffering Jane Blythe, sea faring Brig surrogate Cap Hart and the pompous civil servant Walker.

A good story for the Doctor and jo, the strong working relationship between Katy Manning & Pertwee making them a haphazard Avengers!

The Sea Devils are another fine monster design, synmpathetic turtle faces and a rugged enough suit to allow them to rise out of the sea in an iconic cliffhanger. The only ineffectual moment is when 1 runs from a minefield like a scalded cat! A fast moving story with very little padding.

Warriors of the Deep is awful. A pointless resurrection of an old monster in a half baked cold war parable. The regulars battle with a poor script & make the most of the few good moments they get.

Part 1 is the worst offender for sheer padding. It consist of endless reiteration of the need to revive the Sea Devils by 2 Silurians, running around for the tardis crew after avoiding a missile and a bafflegab contest for the missile base crew.

None of the guest cast get a good role and a wasted Ingrid Pitt while still in her prime was made to look really ugly by ill-judged make up. Only Nigel Humphreys makes an impression as the computer sync operator. In a better story he might have been memorable.
The Silurian mask is a good redesign but sat atop a costume including a beer gut and scaly flares, with a grating tinny voice, they are just ridiculous.
The Sea Devils are faithful to the originals in voice and mask and with moving eyes one up on the original, but having had a visit from Trinny & Susannah they've taken to dressing up as Samurai! Looked bad then, looks bad now.
As for new monster the Myrka, it's a pantomime Sea Cow and beyond that it defies description!
Several slip ups see a completely unnnatural fall into water for the Doctor, Sea Devil heads flopping to 1 side, 2 Sea Devils in the background walking into each other and split Silurian costumes.

Only the model work is good and justly the subject of an Easter egg as Mat Irvine shows his souvenirs.

Commentaries for all 3 stories. A pic n' mix for Silurians with producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks and various others dropping in & out. Particularly good points are Letts' recollections of what he didn't want to inherit from predecessors, location memories + companion Caroline John on the differences between script and the novel which she had just narrated for CD.

Dicks and Letts are joined by director Michael Briant on Sea Devils, moderated by Andrew Cartmel. All 3 have so clear many memories that Cartmel becoems a 5th wheel but self effacingly keeps quiet much of the time and just enjoys the chat. The Navy's involvement and the howlers with ranks and so on are good as are the memories of Roger Delgado's bravery in facing his fear of water. But one thing, can 2 Entertain stop Terrance Dicks from repeating the Pertwee Bouffant story? Several commentaries ago it was funny but together with Silurians it's on the same boxset twice.

We get a Pete'n Jan show for Warriors where they are joined by Mat Irvine who is game for a fun commentary. They make no bones about the quality of the story and have lots of fun with it and remembering guest star Tom Adams!

Documentaries are present for each story just a short making of for Silurians but the lengthy look at the social/political situation at the time and its influence on the story is excellent, watch for Roy Hattersley! More of the same please.

Hello Sailor is a fun making of Sea Devils notable for Katy Manning's 1st onscreen interview, Michael Briant's involvement and the Navy personnel who were involved. we aklso get some super 8 footage shot by them with a commentary.

The Depths is a making of Warriors which makes no bones about its shortcomings but looks at how & why it ended up that way. It is complaimented by the equally excellent They came from beneath the Sea featurette on the monsters of that show.

A featurette on the music of the 2 70's stories plus a look at the colour restoration for Silurians complete a fine package.

More of a Notalgiafest for us Classic who fans than a package for the newer fans. But if you want to show them any story Sea Devils is your best bet.

Review for Doctor Who - The Movie [1996] [1963]:
The Doctor Who Could Have Been
I really have to say that I like Paul McGann as the eighth Doctor. I enjoyed the series of the 8th Doc bookwise, audio cd wise (i.e. Big Finish), and I like this movie. Now I realize that this movie is not perfect. We all know that. So much was thrown into this and well Fox wouldn't allow for a payoff, in my humble opinion, and even worse, it seems that Fox (at least that's what I understand) doesn't ever want this DVD over here in the states, which is a horrific shame. I was able to get it through Amazon.uk seller and I was able to get a regionless DVD player, so I am happy. Still, I think that any Doctor Who library is missing a great point of collection without this DVD. Paul McGann is able to really show what could be, if only he could have been allowed to continue. But at least we have the Big Finish products. Cheers to Paul McGann.

Review for Doctor Who - The Dalek Invasion Of Earth [1963]:
The Daleks return for a second showdown!
This 2-Disc DVD set takes us back to the days of black and white and the first Doctor's era of Doctor Who. Set in the twenty-second century, the Daleks have subjugated the Earth's population with brainwashed Robomen. This was the second Dalek story that was made and is one of the best stories of the Hartnell era. If you can overlook the well-dated effects, there is much to admire in the tale. There is a moody build up in episode 1, culminating with one of the series most famous scenes - a Dalek rising up out of the River Thames. We also see the Daleks portrayed as ruthless fascists, conquering and enslaving. This, made in 1964, must have made quite an impression on the viewing public, with memories of the Second World War still fresh in the minds of many. The only real problem with this story is the Daleks plan to mine the core of the earth in order to be able to pilot it throughout the galaxy. This seems to be stretching things just a little too far. Nevertheless, a fine story, and watch out for an emotional farewell scene at the end of episode 6.
The disc set contains the usual array of DVD extras, including commentaries, trailers and interviews with members of the cast, including those who performed the voices of the Daleks. With the passage of time and the arrival of modern special effects, William Hartnell and his era tend to be overlooked by fans of the programme today. A pity! It may look a bit dated now, but if you want a taste of early Doctor Who stories and want to get some idea why the show became the national institution that it was (and still is) then here's a very good starting point.

Review for Doctor Who - The Beginning (An Unearthly Child [1963] / The Daleks [1963] / The Edge of Destruction [1964]):
How it all began.
This is how a television instiution began back in 1963. William Hartnell was an inspired choice for the part that he would play for the first three years of the show.
We begin with a good opening story. The opening episode is a real classic with two school teachers wandering why one of their pupils knows far more about science and history than she should. Their investigations, take them to an old junk yard, where, inside they discover a mysterious police box and an irascible old man. Eventually they force their way inside the box ... This episode paved the way for all that was to come.
The remaining episodes are set back in the stone age, and tell of the Doctor and his companions struggling to survive and ultimately, escape. These episodes may not match up to the first, but are still very tense and exciting. They also contain a darker element than many of the stories to come over the years.
The second story in the set sees the beginning of another television legend that continues to this day. The Tardis lands on planet Skaro, home to the beautiful pacifist Thals ..... and the Daleks! The series most popular monsters made their debut in a seven part morality tale. There were better Dalek stories to follow in subsequent years, but no one could doubt the impact of this story, which saw Doctor Who's ratings soar over the weeks. It may be a little bit long and sag in the middle, but it contains some of the shows most memorable scenes. The most notable of these being the cliffhanger to Episode 1.
The final story, `The Edge of Destruction' is a bit of a disappointment. The first episode is a good one, which builds up tension, as the Tardis crew appear to be facing real danger. Too bad that this is all spoiled with a disappointing resolution in the second episode! However, significantly, this is the first episode to hint that the Tardis is more than just a time-travel machine.
The set contains the usual array of DVD feaures icluding commentaries, interviews withcast and crew and documentaries charting the making of the programmes. The first disc contains the original pilot episode. It is very similar to the opening episode of an unearthly child, but has a few subtle differences. You may note, in particular, as the Tardis takes off, there is a much more different, electronic sound, compared to the one that we have become used to. Then on the third disc, we have an abridged soundtrack of the lost story `Marco Polo.' This is accompanied by a series of still shots and gives us an insight into what this adventure would have been like.
There were better stories to follow over the years, but nevertheless, these are still worth watching. As someone said many years later:"After all, that's how it all started!"

Review for Doctor Who - New Beginnings (The Keeper of Traken [1981] / Logopolis [1981] / Castrovalva [1982]) [1963]:
Eminently watchable
I sat down to watch a couple of episodes from this boxset at 10.30 one evening before bed. I just kept watching. I know people complain about Doctor Who under John Nathan Turner, about how it was so designed, about how it"destroyed" the classic series, but it worked a lot of the time.

Three stories: Keeper of Traken, Logopolis, Castrovalva. In the first Tom Baker travels to the the paradise of Traken, only to discover that an old foe is waiting for him. In Logopolis, it's Tom's swansong, the introduction of the iconic Tegan Jovanka, and a threat to the whole universe using mathematical equations. Castrovalva is Peter Davison's first (though the fourth he filmed) story and it involves a space/time trap and an unstable regeneration.

And it's all a lot of fun. Tom is subdued, but it means he gives a more measured performance rather than hamming it up, and there is a sense of predestination when he regenerates into Pete. Pete's performance doesn't coalesce into his Doctor's personality until the final scenes of Castrovalva, meaning that the companions carry his story, but he does some impressions of previous Doctors along the way that are a lot of fun.

While Keeper of Traken is more of a fantasy tale about ossifying evil, Logopolis and Castrovalva are built on solid science, and although the special effects budget can't quite visualise the grand ideas, they are fascinating. Logopolis particularly prefigures the new series' School Reunion.

The extras are great too, Tom and Peter have never been afraid of sharing their opinions on Who, so there are some real insights here. And the commentaries are chucklesome.

This is delightful stuff.
