Review for The Tudors: Complete BBC Series 1 [2007]:
dissappointed
Having watched most of the dvd of the tuders, who ever wrote this serial obviously didn't check their history books. Reading other reviews I can only deduce from them that they haven't read their history either. Margaret didn't marry charles she married James of scotland then married a douglas. Princess Mary didn't go to France she was too young. There are too many discrepancies to mention that I have found the dvds boring and I have got fed up with saying thats not true and thats not right

Review for The Godfather Trilogy: Remastered Collection - Limited Edition Steelbook [1971] (Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
Nice new restorations, but why no chronological edit?
I love that these landmark movies got a squeaky clean restoration, added special features, and that Godfather II is on one disc instead of two. As a Godfather fan, of course I've ordered this new set, BUT I can't wait for a definitive chronological edit to hit DVD someday (soon?).

Previous chronlogical edits include: (1)"Godfather 1902-1959: The Complete Epic" which is a VHS-only 402 min. chronological edit of Parts I & II not available on DVD or laserdisc. Doesn't include Part III (171 min.) which would take it to 573 min. total; (2)"Godfather Trilogy: 1901-1980" which is a Laserdisc chronological 583 min. edit of Parts I, II, & III (std 171 min. for Part III); and (3)"Godfather Saga" (aka Mario Puzo's The Godfather Saga: The Complete Novel for Television) which is a chronological 605 min. edit of Parts I, II, & III with added footage (434 min. for Parts I & II plus std 171 min. for Part III) done for TV broadcast only. This version was never issued commercially in any format. Some lucky people like me were able to record it off TV.

ALL of these chronological versions are slightly different and all contain at least some footage not contained on the other versions! Come on Francis, give the fans a super complete chronologiocal edit sooner rather than later!

Beware - Not all films in correct ratio
While this should be a marvelous box set with some very fine Hitchcock films and terrific documentaries included, potential customers should note that several of the films that should be in widescreen are presented
here in 4:3 pan and scan versions. The Birds for instance is advertised on the cover as being in widescreen when it isn't. If however you don't mind seeing the films like this, then the box set probably offers good value.

One of the best tv series of the past number of years. Fantastic writing and acting - gripping stuff. Everything of the 70's was spot on - I remember them well and the casting for Gene Hunt and Sam Tyler was spot on - buy it and watch it - you will not be disappointed. FANTASTIC STUFF

Wire In The Blood 5 [2007]

Our Price: £12.98
Used Price: £12.80
New Price: £12.98

Review for Wire In The Blood 5 [2007]:
Series 5 and still going strong
This two disk set contains all four episodes of the fifth series of Wire In The Blood. The episodes in this series are The Colour Of Amber, Nocebo, The Name Of Angels and Anything You Can Do. Robson Green returns as Dr Tony Hill a psychologist and Simone Lahbib is back as D. I. Alex Fielding for her second series. Green and Lahbib have an excellent on screen chemistry which has developed from series four.

The episodes are up to the usual high standard which we have come to expect and do contain some scenes of graphic violence. There are also interviews with cast and crew which are quite interesting. In fact my only gripe is that there are no chapter stops on the episodes which means you have to fast forward to a particular scene - this was an annoying overlook in the series four dvd and should have been rectified. However, this is only a minor gripe and should not put you off buying this excellent dvd.

Review for The Shield - Season 6:
Exceptional TV making and exceptional entertainment
Please disregard the strangely obsessive comments about running time; this series is a treat not a cheat. Splitting what certainly feels like one long season into two (5 and 6) does lead to a slightly perplexing carry-over of the John Kavanaugh/IAD storyline and you might need your memory refreshing if you've allowed yourself a break between seasons. In terms of criticism, that's about it. Exceptional TV making and exceptional entertainment from beginning to end.

The Shield, The Sopranos, The Wire: all different, all outstanding, all hugely enjoyable. It is a little disturbing that serious and seriously violent crime should be the subject matter of such cracking entertainment, but there you are.

Review for I'm Not There [2007]:
the old, weird america
I'd really just like to say a word or two to those who persist in describing the Richard Gere segment of this film as its weakest point: please go back and listen to The Basement Tapes, pay attention to the sleevenotes, and if you've got the time and intellectual energy, read Greil Marcus's Invisible Republic. You will recognise all the strange characters who populate that eerie place that seems to hover between this world and some other (Marcus's Invisible Republic, or The Old, Weird America), and you will see why Gere's character is so crucial to this kaleidoscopic view of Dylan's art. I found this part of Haynes's admirably ambitious movie to be the most thrilling, and Jim James's otherworldly rendition of Goin' To Acapulco the most stunning piece of music (outside Dylan's own, naturally). Much of Dylan's best work seems always to be just beyond our grasp, which is partly why it is so compelling, but there are gateways to a deeper understanding available to us if we can be bothered to look for them. Like all gateways they can let us in or they can keep us out. Our choice.

Eastern Promises [2007]

Review for Eastern Promises [2007]:
Entertaining
David Cronenberg allows the violence to face us head on in this England based movie. There is no warning and we are upfront and then it recedes. But we remember what we have seen and heard and there is no going back. This is a gangster world foreign to us, a world of horror, violence and a culture we cannot understand. Trafficking in human misery and total control of all things.

Eastern Promises is a bristling film that shows the inside of the Russian Mafia. Viggo Mortenson, plays Nikolai, a driver and henchman for Semyon, played by Armin Mueller-Stahl, the owner of a trans-Siberian restaurant in London. Semyon looks like a nice old soul, but underneath he is a monster who will stop at nothing and his son, Kirill, Vincent Cassel, plays his role masterfully, a man with no conscience. Naomi Watts plays Anna, a midwife in London. She assists in the delivery of a baby born to a young 14 year old who was raped, and who dies after the birth. Anna tries to find the baby's relatives using her mother's diary. The diary is the secret life of Kirill and Semyon and their home of women used for their pleasure. Anna and Nikolai meet on several occasions, but Nikolai plays his role of the tough, haunted man to the hilt. For Anna and Nikolai, Semyon will unlock secrets neither wants to face.

The Diving Bell And The Butterfly [2007]

Our Price: £12.98
New Price: £12.98

Review for The Diving Bell And The Butterfly [2007]:
Funny, moving and beautifully shot - the best film of 2007!
The book is so beautiful a piece of personal philosophy that I went to see the film with some trepidation, but if anything the film adds to the book by Bauby. The film is beautifully shot, funny and moving (but not in a sentimental way).

The director (who does not speak fluent French) chose to retain the original language of the book and this, I believe speaks volumes in a world of cinema where the digestability of a film by a mass audience is often classed as more important than retaining the soul of a piece of artistic cinema. The film was originally meant to be made by Pathe and star Jonny Depp - I think a tragedy was averted!

This film can be enjoyed (yes enjoyed - despite its theme it really isnt at all depressing) on so many levels - as a compelling human story, as an uplifting philosophy and as a work of art. You should not miss this film.

Review for Truly, Madly, Deeply [1992]:
truly madly brilliant...
This has to be at the top of my list of all-time favourite films. The acting is always top quality, understated and the characters are all too human (like the part where Nina and Jamie hide out of sight as Nina's sister rings the doorbell). As a study of bereavement and grief it ranks among the best, but it's not at all doom and gloom - it has me laughing one minute and crying the next. The last few moments are particularly poignant, but it always leaves me with a feeling of being uplifted. If you've never seen Truly, Madly, Deeply, you're missing a real treat.

Far From The Madding Crowd [1998]

Our Price: £3.98
New Price: £3.98

Review for Far From The Madding Crowd [1998]:
delightful dramatisation of a wonderful book
I have watched this so many times that my original VHS-format is falling to pieces! One of Hardy's most accessible novels, this story quite daringly (for its time) deals with such issues as love, patience and the -- often devastating -- effects of human sexuality. It is all done, though, with great humanity and even the villain has some redeeming features. There's little black-and-white in Hardy's portraits of the three men all humming around Bathsheba like bees. Nor is she herself a simplistic character.

As with the best of British television costume dramas, this 1998 version features some very well-known and -loved actors, although I believe that Paloma Baeza may not have been so well-known when she was cast as the female lead. Nathaniel Parker is simply stunning -- and irresistible -- as the superb Gabriel Oak (a more appropriate name for his character could not have been devised), and Jonathan Firth is very fine indeed as Sergeant Troy -- this may be his best role yet on the small screen.

The music is charming; the settings and costumes are perfect... Sit back for a few hours, and simply bask in the the warmth of this production. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Used Price: £6.45
New Price: £6.08

Review for In The Valley Of Elah [2008]:
Grim and morose film
"In the Valley of Elah" is an elegaic, brooding film which verges on the depressing at times. It tells the story of an ex soldier's quest to discover what has happened to his son following his disappearance whilst on leave from the war in Iraq.Tommy Lee Jones plays this worried father, an ex soldier himself and he acts the role well , ably supported by Charlize Theron ,a police detective who helps him.The film is slow moving and far from action packed and I found it to be only moderately entertaining. I failed to derive any great message from this film other than that some American soldiers behaved like scumbags in Iraq and subsequently suffered from PTSD. There is no examination of whether the USA should actually be even participating in this controversial conflict and as a result the final melodramatic scene in the film seemed a little incongruous to me.

Bones - Season 2 [2006]

Used Price: £16.20

Review for Bones - Season 2 [2006]:
More of the same
The adventures of the square-jawed forensic anthropologist and her square-shouldered FBI partner continue in much the same crowd-pleasing vein as series one, with just a few minor alterations.

The most obvious change is the new boss. Goodman was a good character but they were running out of ideas for him. In coroner Camille Saroyan (Tamara Taylor) they introduce someone who has a good excuse for constantly being around the lab, can contribute usefully to investigations, is an excuse for having ickier corpses with lots of lovely rotting flesh (Bones doesn't do flesh), ups the eye-candy quotient and disturbs both the balance of power in the lab and the will-they-won't-they relationship between Brennan and Booth. However, her line"I am a diuretic seagull, people: everything goes through me" might just be the worst in television history.

The producers have picked up one annoying habit from somewhere - throwing in flashbacks to the events the scientists are reconstructing. It's enough to be told that a stiletto heel went through someone's spine, there's really no need for us to see it. This is part of a slight but definite trend towards increasing the gross-out factor of the show (confronted with a bath-full of chemicals and liquified human, Brennan says 'this is disgusting, even for me'). Whether or not you consider this trend an improvement depends on your personal preference - it doesn't bother me especially but I do think it's unnecessary.

A little more of the running time is given over to continuing stories - the mystery of Brennan's parents, relationships between Angela and Hodgins and Booth and Saroyan - but thankfully they don't dominate. They can't resist the urge to increase the number of credibility-stretching 'main character in peril' plots (every regular is placed in a life-or-death situation at least once), but again it's within reasonable limits.

Other than that, it's really more of the same, which is a good thing. What really makes the show stand out is the humour, and that's present and correct. An episode with an obnoxious vertically-challenged agent of the state department is particular priceless: Brennan to Booth -"Normally if someone spoke to you like that you'd be threatening to throw him through a window, but just because with him it's an actual physical possibility..."
