first impressions

I just received this today, courtesy of amazon.

It was very easy to setup with my philips flat screen tv, just a couple of cables, and up you go.

I lived in many countries, and therefore have an extensive collection of DVD from many regions. Thanks to the web, I was able to find very rapidly the code to key in on the remote control to have this unit enable for region 0, and all my DVD works fine...

I can see the difference with the upscaling factor, in terms of image quality... The sound quality 'sounds' great. I have tried multiple movies, like lord of the ring, and star wars, and the 'experience' is definitely better, visually and in terms of sound, than when using my old DVD player and my TC speakers..

A few comments:

* There is no HDMI cable in the box, but there is a SCART cable, and a couple of others, for example to connect the TV audio out to the device.
* The connection for external audios are conveniently located on the subwoofer, reducing the number of cables to connect to the main unit.
* The support for the main unit is too high to fit in my tv cabinet. It is easy to remove it, but there is no simple/lower replacement for it. The unit can just be put down like it is, at a small angle, but I would prefer to have a more stable support.
* Not sure yet about the fact that this system is supposed to 'mimic' a 5.1 system by projecting sounds to the wall behind the user, but it sounds good.
* The remote control power button is in fact only an 'off' button. Once the unit is in 'standby', it can only be 'waken up' by using the play button of the remote control. Strange but it works.

Impressive

I bought this as a present and by the reactions i got its brilliant - it only took 3 days on normal delivery to arrive, it comes in a big box so make sure there are some strong men to help you move it around. However once opening the box, the actual system in its parts are light in weight. Assembling was very easy, with a good guide, however we did have a few problems connecting it with the xbox 360, but an optical cable is all you need as previously mentioned, and then you have to make sure 'sat' mode is on for the sound to come through.
So far the speakers have impressed us both giving us the quality sony is known for, however custumers considering this may like to know that as it is from a european dealer the actual power cable is for a european socket which for some people they may not like this, on the other hand an adapter is provided which actually makes it look like a regular plug! otherwise i personaly dont see why this would be a problem....

What a Cool Piece of Kit!

Besides being marvelous it's also a bargain. Before buying this I went to a well known electrical store and looked at the model below with 3 speakers. It was 99p more than this item. I got it this morning and had it rigged up in around half an hour. I stuck in a DVD and my wife came downstairs to complain that I was vibrating the whole house with the sound. Stunning!

Look No Further...

...Unless you feel like spending a whole lot more on 5.1. I bought this set to accompany my Panasonic HDTV and it fits perfectly into the scenario.

I run my PS3 via digital optical (TosLink) to the amplifier's input and the sound is unbelievable - if the correct source and settings are chosen. So far I have accomplished Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic II decoding, while DTS 5.1 surprisingly gave no sound at all. As the amplifier itself is capable of DTS 5.1, I am not sure whether this is a technical limitation of the game, the PS3 or the TosLink input, as I cannot compare with another device using TosLink.

However, the discrete 5.1 sound (Dolby Digital 5.1) is truly amazing on this 5.1 set. When you are listening to a stereo source, your best bet will be Dolby Pro Logic II (as it can emulate 5 channels) in addition with the Surround Enhancer function of the amplifier. Trust me ;)
There is, though, one thing I have not yet explored - the VIERA Link function especially for Panasonic's 2007 TVs. I didn't have a spare HDMI cord to connect the amplifier and LCD with - which that function requires.

On a general note, the speaker wires supplied are plenty. Off the top of my head I'd say the rear (surround) speakers have 5-7metres. That's the most important part I think.
Also, this amplifier can upscale your DVDs to 1080p if you please - and have the according HDTV. This was actually the least important factor to me, as the PS3 can playback Blu-Ray itself and upscale DVDs, too.

You should take this 5.1 set from Panasonic as a magnificent solution for surround sound and the bonus of DVD upscaling on top. If you're looking for something more useful regarding video, I recommend getting a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD player instead.
One thing that sort of surprised me was the fact that not even a SCART cable is included in the package. Still...you do get the quite useful microphone for automatic setup and calibration. It adjusts the loudness and balance of the speakers thus taking some work off you.

Conclusion; Great price, great sound quality, great technology, great design.

Dav-x1g - amazing sound - amazing price

I have this item and I cannot believe how good it is. The main amp/dvd unit is unbelievably well made, it is really heavy with a proper aluminuim top and bottom. The front speakers are very loud despite being small, and the sub woofer will shake plaster off walls its so good. The unit comes with very easy"plug and play" speaker leads and extension pieces can be bought seperately. The DVD player is the usual Sony quality and will play dvd copies and even DIVx's off the internet. The back of the unit has a huge range of connectors with scarts, phono, and digital inputs. Really for the price you cannot go wrong. Sony do a Dav-x1v which has a dvd multichanger but was priced at £699 in the Sony centre, This is £400 cheaper and sounds every bit as good!

FANTASTIC for everyting!

Amazing high wattage for money (300w), amazing sound quality. Looks good and is very high quality in itself. The remote control is very easy to get used to, and is not painted like many remotes these days, this is a plus point as painted remotes wear and look bad after about six months of use.

ALSO, this DVD player remembers where you were on a DVD, you can even take the DVD out and when you put it back in it will remember exactly where you were, which is what many people miss about Videos.

This is the best DVD player and surround sound system i have ever had, and would recommend it to anyone!

very good system

I wanted a new system but did not want a 5.1 system with all those wires etc, could not find a review on this but took a gamble and bought it on the strength of the name 'jamo'. I have bought jamo speakers in the past and have always been pleased with the results. The sytem is perfect for me as the unit is very small and fits in my cabinet, the speakers are small too and are mounted on the wall under the tv. The sound is very good, very lound and very clear, i can hear the dialogue on a film very clearly while the base could shake small villages to rubble. Overall i am very pleased, it is definatly not as good as a 5.1 system (as it does not have the surround) but it is a very good 2.1 system. The good bits: Loud, clear, adjustable base volumes and levels, looks good, usb point, compact, good value, can add more speakers in the future (to the base speaker) Bad bits: Only came with 1 adapter plug when it needs 2, to transfer from 2 pin plug to a three pin!!! Sound options are limited on the small speakers. Overall i would recomend.

Not Bad

I recently bought this package as i didn't want to run cables to the rear speakers, and didn't really want to buy an amp and speakers etc,

Pretty easy to set up, obviously rear wireless speakers will never compare to wired so you have to consider that when buying, if like me you have wireless internet, phone, Xbox 360 controllers the unit finds a free frequency so it still works over the above which is good. the DVD player is ok, up scales to 1080p also has optical cable port to connect to Sky HD etc. only bad thing is I get a bit of interference in the wireless speakers, when you watch a DVD or movie decoded with 5.1 its fine but normal TV I turn them off as it sounds like who ever is talking is under 6ft of water

All in all pretty good unit, was worth buying to play Xbox 360 with surround sound
