Review for Goodfellas [1990]:
Great film, awful disc
I didn't read the reviews before I bought it, because I knew what a great film it is.
Big mistake, because I wouldn't have bought it if I'd read them.

It's a double sided disc, which means you have to get up halfway through and turn it over. Why? Why do this?

It's also a poor quality transfer (as another reviewer said, it's barely better than VHS).

Avoid this version like the plague.

Review for 24 : Complete Season 3:
class
season 3 of 24 starts off strange, firstly the events that ended series 2 are not continued, this series starts off 3 years after the end of series 2,and that was a strange decision at first but made sense later.
This time america is under threat from a virus that can spread like wildfire,a dead body turns up packed with the virus and a ransom is demanded with regards to a man in prison who if not released ,then the virus will be unleashed.Enter jack and the c.t.u team who all have 24 hours to get things sorted.
When i look back at all that happened in this series my teeth could itch and my nose could bleed, there is so much to think about,so much detail,so many twists,so many times that i thought i had it figured out, only for my theory to be thrown out the window,so much action,so much tension, yes the glory of the show remains, new characters are introduced and it takes time to work them out.As usual this is all done in real time, with no flashbacks or little clues splattered about the place.
This series isnt as good as the first two series' if im gonna tell the entire truth, and there is an argument that some of what we see has been done before, but original twists leap out of the screen like nothing from this world, vital indeed ,i love it.

Review for Spooks : Complete BBC Series 3 [2002]:
A season of shakeups
Season 3 starts off with the reemergence of Tom who we last saw wading into the sea at the end of season 2. Tom is adamant he's been set up and is on a quest to prove his innocence but his betrayal has shaken MI5 and the Chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee sees his chance to seize control of MI5.

There's the usual round of problems for the Spooks in season 3 - terrorists, assassination attempts, hostage taking etc. But the biggest change we see in season 3 is the introduction of new faces and the exit of old faces. I was sorry to see so many changes but loved the episodes involved as they were typical edge-of-your-seat episodes. Yet again Spooks had me hooked but left me begging for more at the end of episode 10!

Top TV Drama
With the unsurpassable Helen Mirren as Jane Tennison, battling her demons through 7 episodes of one of the best cop series ever made. Mirren's acting is quite breathtaking; moving, authentic and gritty. Throughout she is aided by excellent casts, the plots are believable and gripping. Truly top class, with not a dud amongst them.
My only niggle is the relatively high price of the box set, which costs about as much as purchasing the 7 episodes separately.

Review for Fargo (Special Edition) [1996]:
Fargo Goes Far Beyond Your Average Black Comedy
To many good film fanatics the assurance of William H Macy and Frances McDormand is normally enough to ensure a night in with the dvd player but for those who aren't familiar with the actors or the fantastic directorial work of the Coen Brothers this is going to convert you.
Quirky?! Yes its Coen Brothers work here.. but also hilarious Macy and McDormand stun in their Scandinavian lilts as a small town couple who are not so traditional. Steve Buscemi also shines and even though the language isn't exactly subtle the film is riddled with hilarious dark humour from beginning to end and is well worth watching for anyone who likes a bit of offbeat genius!

Not as good as Series 1, but excellent just the same.
I had purchased the first series a while ago and fell in love with Spooks. I think it's one of the best shows out there. So, after finishing Series 1, I quickly ordered Series 2. While the series starts off slow, there are several tremendous episodes mid-season that are well work the price of the DVD. I have also picked up Series 3 after having finished this one.

Review for Spooks: Complete BBC Series 6:
Lest we forget!
Spooks is a series set in the fictional Section D of the real MI5. The action is packed into an hour long episode without really ever letting up. So, just as a side point of reference, when the US bought it and edited it down to 40 minutes (to fit in their hour slot with commercials) it really is super-fast action packed.

Some reviewers on here are citing the BBC sloppily dealing with issues on facist terrorism, as this seems to appear every series, well for a start, that is down to KUDOS the production company in charge of the production, the BBC merely commission a series. For a second, sadly, the let's-blow-everyone-to-kingdom-come-terrorism is still pretty much in the focus of national security, and SPOOKS always tries to make the stories relevent.

One reviewer on here says that"no-one in their right mind would confuse SPOOKS with the real MI5"...so I should think! It's a TV programme, if they were to show what REALLY goes on in MI5 when dealing with issues like this, no one would watch. It's rather like confusing James Bond with the real MI6 or a show like Big Brother with quality entertainment.

SPOOKS has never tried be anything it's not. It's never tried to do anything but provide high-action, intelligent story-lines that are some how relevent to the society we live in and indeed take a look at some of the issues that the nation"have to deal with". It's all very clever, it's all very entertaining (even the bits that scare the c**p out of you.) and the bottom line is this, SPOOKS succeeds where others have failed, and the others have failed big time.

We all know that it is all highly unlikely, that some of the situations are a little dubious and that never in a million years would we really believe that a government organisation gets through a day without having to fill in numerous requisition forms, in triplicate, before even leaving the office, but heck...that is why we watch it...for entertainment, excitment and fun...not for a highly accurate portrayal of the Secret Service...isn't it?!?

In conclusion, SPOOKS has continued to thrill audiences for six series, and having a big continuous arc this series was inspired. I can think of worse ways of spending ten hours and I would recommend this series anytime! Roll on season 7!

Untraceable [2008]

Our Price: £12.98
Used Price: £9.39
New Price: £9.37

Review for Untraceable [2008]:
Wait a minute...what are you trying to say....are you blaming us for loving violence!?1?,
Untraceable seems like the perfect thriller. And it deals with something that not a lot of thrillers have yet dealt with and that's the idea of cyber crimes and a very disturbing cyber-crime at that. Untraceable could have been the perfect set up for a very disturbing, gory thriller with homages to Silence of The Lambs, Saw, and other thrillers. Unfortunately where the idea was great the execution was awful. I think many mistakes were made with this dud and done differently it could have been great. The unfortunate part is that director Gregory Hoblit is not lacking experience. In fact he has directed some fantastic thrillers and should have been able to make this a far more worthwhile cause. Not only that but he has years of experience of TV Cop Drama and yet fails miserably in creating any sort of character arc or real thrill to the story. Its not a complete wash I mean there are moments where you slide forward on the front of your seat as they dangle this murder in front of you and you think"All right, here we go" and then the next scene sends you slouching back into 'this is boring' mode. Its the perfect collection of the wrong elements.

One reason being Miss Diane Lane. She's a pretty good actress and I like her in a couple of films though I never been a major fan of hers and always seen her in mostly supporting roles. In here I find her boring and just with no emotion to her and that's exactly what she brings to the table. She leads the film in a boring manner without ever really getting into the case besides showing a lot of perseverance. Colin Hanks, probably the most talented on board, does show a lot of potential but they never give him enough to work with so he mostly is just there. Billy Burke is the hot detective who shows up to help out the single Lane. Burke barely is a blip on the radar other than being some sort of lame romantic contact for Lane that never really pans out.

Perhaps given a better, more dynamic script this cast could have pulled together and done something but I think they were an unfortunate ingredient because there was no chemistry no spark, except for maybe a slight connection between Hanks and Lane as partners. Now the real key to this film should have been the murders. The idea was the more people that visited a web site where someone was strung up and dying in a different way, the faster they died. This could have opened up a huge door for being diverse and interesting and they do a half decent job and the murders are grisly and disgusting but everything else around it is so tame and boring that you can easily forget about this film.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Season 6 Part 2 [2001]

Review for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Season 6 Part 2 [2001]:
Six years on, and as good as ever.
It is remarkable how after six years of CSI there has been no drop in quality whatsoever. If anything, it has improved as we get to know the characters even better.

The structure is exactly as it has always been in that the episodes are story driven, rather than through the characters. After all if it isn't broken, why fix it? However, there are some character based scenes which allow us to get to know them better without becoming melodramatic and over the top.

The stories are as fascinating as always and at times genuinely disturbing.

If you have watched and enjoyed CSI previously then I can confidently say that season six will not let you down.

Review for Inspector Morse - The Complete Series (33 Disc Box Set) [1987]:
Great Show, Problems with Transfer
I am a big fan of Morse. However, I have now had two sets of Morse and have had the same problem with both. The disc of the Settling of the Sun is a horrible transfer. The audio is fine but the video is--how shall I describe it--occasionally reduced to what looks like a series of semi connected photographs. There are, in other words, a lot of stops and starts throughout the first ten minutes of the disc (I couldn't watch it beyond that). I thought it might be an attempt to be arty during the opening credits but it doesn't stop there...

I am bummed...

Review for Dirty Harry Complete Special Edition Collection [1971]:
Nothing wrong with shooting as long as all the right people get shot.
Seeing as how DIRTY HARRY was the first film I remember seeing (I guess I was about 8 years old....Thanks Dad!) I'm easily pleased when it comes to Eastwood's seminal cop series. However, even if I wasn't already such a huge fan, I would still be extremely impressed with the outstanding package Warners have put together for this re-release.
There is a plethora of refreshingly excellent new documentaries placed alongside all the extras duplicated from the previous boxset and feature plenty of fresh, insightful contributions from many involved in the films, including the man himself. There is a particulary good documentary looking at the impact of violence in films that has some very astute points to make. The real treats however for fans are the commentaries.
There are commentary tracks on each film, though the best are from those directly involved in the film-making process, rather than scholars or biographers. There are, alas, no commentaries from Eastwood himself and Richard Schickel's contributions do unfortunately prove a little dry, However the boxset is worth owning simply on the basis of John Milius's (as always) outstanding commentary for MAGNUM FORCE. His gloriously un-p.c.commentary track should have you laughing your ass off until the very end. Wonderful stuff. James Fargo, another gun fanatic (perhaps the best qualification to make a Dirty Harry picture!) provides another fabulous track on THE ENFORCER.
The box set also comes with the excellent feature length documentary, OUT OF THE SHADOWS and a host of other, non-dvd merchandise, including Harry's badge! No Smith and Wesson model 29 included, however. Overall, a wonderful box set that does tremendous justice to Eastwood's essential series.

WaZ (Extreme Sleeve Edition) [2008]

Our Price: £8.98
Used Price: £7.90
New Price: £8.98

Review for WaZ (Extreme Sleeve Edition) [2008]:
A DECENT HORROR FILM
You probably think you don't need to see another film about folks tied to chairs being tortured. Hostel transformed this Abu Ghraib image - also practiced by the real-life `BTK' (Bind Torture Kill) serial murderer - into cliché, and my dungeon is already full of depressing lookalike exercises in simplistic misanthropy. However, the peculiarly-titled W”Z (W-delta-Z) turns the sub-genre around.

The BTK scenes are not only disturbing, but serve to make a point. By establishing that at least half the participants arguably deserve what's happening to them, the horrors are more complicated than when a mean movie villain carves up an innocent. Vigilante Jean Lerner, powerfully played by Selma Blair, is not merely avenging a wrong done her but trying to solve a philosophical riddle (does altruism exist in nature?). Her former abusers could end their ordeals by throwing a switch to electrocute the especially-selected person they love most who is strapped to a home-made execution chair opposite."You don't think I'm enjoying this?" Jean whispers in her agony as she searches for a self-sacrificing streak in her victims, only to be disappointed time after time.

Symbols (`W”Z') carved into corpses lead the investigators to a jittery animal researcher who identifies an equation representing a theory of animal behaviour. As more corpses show up, Stellan SkarsgÃ¥rd's crumpled dick has to admit that the crimes must be connected with an old assault, which went unprosecuted for slightly too guessable reasons. Atrocities are doled out in hallucinatory flashes, and information is given in an order which confounds easy judgements: by the time we understand what was done to Jean, a pregnant woman and a child have been killed, and the first full representation of her procedure comes with the most culpable gangbanger (Tom Hardy).

Shooting mostly in Belfast, director Tom Shankland goes for the stylised neo-noir feel of Seven, presenting an almost claustrophobic big city story where all the characters on both sides of the law are wound up together and crime scene forensics shade into abstract inquiry.

Verdict
If you've got the stomach for strong scenes of torture, and the heart to take part in an uncomfortable debate about human nature, this intelligent horror is well worth your time...

Review for The Ultimate Bourne Collection Steel box set [2007]:
A Steel Box - It's Worth it!
I bought this because it would save me space. It's the size of a normal DVD box, feels great and looks slick.

The DVD's in themselve are great as everyone knows. A fourth? It might be in the pipeline but wasn't written by the guy who wrote the original books.

The story as it goes in brief if you haven't already discovered. Bourne is an agent for the US government. Sent to do a job which goes array. He losses his memory and from the beginning of the first film, Bourne tries to recall who he is and tries to work out his memories.

The plot starts in the Med. and takes us on a rollercoaster of a ride. Visiting all the big hitters in Europe. France, Germany, England to the USA for a grand finale.

It's just great.

Topics regularly pop up here and there, Bond or Bourne?

It's Bourne all the way!

And if Holloywood wanted to do a rehash-up of a Bond Vs Bourne film. James would be dead before he could say Jason. It would end up being a trailer to nothing.

Just BUY it!
