Review for Hannibal Rising [2007]:
best since silence of the lambs
decent addition to the hannibal saga that gives die hard fans all the gore they could want and while the ultimate revelation about why hannibal does become a cannibal is a bit dissapointing, its a well made and decently acted movie that dosent add anyhing new but it is a much more satisfing entry than the rubbish hannibal and the dull red dragon

Disturbia [2007]

Review for Disturbia [2007]:
Pretty good
First off, this is a well-made movie with a good script and cast. Shia LaBeouf is totally believable as the teenager trying to coping with the loss of his father and lead a normal life.

When he suspects his neighbour of being a serial killer, the momentum really picks up, with some great scenes of tension as he goes about trying to prove his theory. The character of Ronald, who is Kale's best friend, is one of the best sidekick characters I've seen for ages and helps the main characters coalesce.

I agree with a previous reviewer who said the film doesn't know what it is....comedy/thriller/horror...and it's fair to say I would have loved to have been scared more, but all in all, this was a good effort.

Miller's Crossing [1990]

Our Price: £3.97
Used Price: £2.49
New Price: £2.75

Review for Miller's Crossing [1990]:
Verbose, darkly comic and visually energetic deconstruction of the gangster genre.
As Blood Simple and Raising Arizona had previously done with the respective genre of film-noir and the screwball comedy, Miller's Crossing attempts to do with the American gangster film. Here, the Coen's aren't simply attempting to pastiche the style of Hollywood mob films of the 30's and 40's, but rather, create a customized deconstruction of every single narrative contrivance or characteristic prevalent in those films. Naturally, in keeping with the film's they'd made before (and those that they would go on to create throughout the subsequent decade) the various signs, themes and signifiers have been dusted off, stripped away and re-adapted with an equal amount of warm nostalgia and distancing post-modern irony, and then, finally, restructured with those trademark characters and idiosyncrasies that only the Coen brothers can really create.

The style of the film is trapped somewhere between the straight (though perhaps stylised in order to meet the requirement of the genre) reality of Blood Simple, with the over-the-top characters and set-pieces of Raising Arizona. On top of this, we also have the gorgeous noir-like cinematography of Barry Sonnenfeld, which draws on genre films of the 30's as well as more recent gangster pictures like The Godfather and Once Upon A Time in America (to quote the two most-obvious reference points). It also seems to predate the slick,"handsome" style of a film like Road To Perdition, with both films sharing that same colour-scheme of muted browns and autumnal reds, as well as the use of dramatic lighting, which here seems a little more"expressionistic" than most other mob/noir films of the last few decades. As well as the gorgeous style of both the cinematography and production design, there's also Carter Burwell's fantastic and evocative theme music (which was used in a long running Caffrey's commercial towards the end of the last decade; see also, The Hudsucker Proxy) and the standout performances from the excellent, ensemble cast.

Like much of the Coen's earlier works, the story, and indeed, the characters, are both wildly over-the-top and the actors seem to be having a great time imitating the Hollywood genre stalwarts of the 30's and 40's. Gabriel Byrne as the laconic Tom is the protagonist, the"man behind the man", who watches over his careless boss Leo, perfectly rendered by a stoic Albert Finney. There's also fine support from seasoned character actors and Coen regulars like J.E Freeman, Jon Polito, Steve Buscemi and a career best John Turturro, all of which adds further layers of narrative tension, drama and strokes of broad, darkly comic humour to an already fantastic film.

Review for The Thomas Crown Affair [1999]:
Best Film I've Ever Scene
I am eighteen and a film buff. And this is my favourite film out of all the ones I've seen. Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo spar off each other wonderfully and their chemistry is one of the great factors of this brilliant film - the other factors being an ingenious plot, outstanding performances and sparkling dialogue. Extra plaudits go to the fine actor Dennis Leary, who is outstanding throughout. As you might put it, Brosnan steals the painting, Leary steals the show.

Review for Untraceable [2008]:
Diane Lane is wonderful in this gripping and intense thriller
Oscar nominated star DIANE LANE (Unfaithful, Jumper, The Perfect Storm) is wonderful as an FBI agent on the trail of a brilliant but vicious serial killer in this intense and gripping thriller."UNTRACEABLE" is very much in the vein as"SE7EN","SILENCE OF THE LAMBS", and the very first"SAW" movie. If you liked those movies you'll LOVE"UNTRACEABLE". It has some excellent action pieces, some truly effective deaths, and characters that are lifelike and you can care about. The film has a dark and brooding atmosphere of dread and is very powerful and gripping. The DVD is of superb quality with a great picture, amazing sound, and tons and tons or well presented extras. DIANE LANE fans and fans of thrillers and horrors should definately give"UNTRACEABLE" a viewing. Very recommended!!! 5 stars!

Went The Day Well? [1942]

Our Price: £5.98
Used Price: £9.57
New Price: £5.95

Review for Went The Day Well? [1942]:
Very good
This film is a very well made 2nd World War story, which is based on a short story by Graham Greene.

The acting is generally very good, although there was one officer who struck me as being particularly wooden, but his was a small part and of little consequence. There are quite a few memorable scenes in this film which (for 1942) are very tense. Interestingly it is the British who commit the more horrible acts of violence, whereas the Germans are mostly portrayed in quite a good light.

Unlike a modern film the acts of violence in this film were never shown in graphic detail, but surprisingly the film made it quite obvious what was about to happen, even if they couldn't show the detail. In this respect another aspect of the films strengths was the cinematography.

My only other criticism is that the surprise element in the film is removed by the introduction by one of the villagers at the start of the film. Overall though this is one of the very best 2nd world war films made at the time I have ever seen. Strongly recommended.

Get Carter [1971]

Our Price: £4.98
Used Price: £3.19
New Price: £3.40

Review for Get Carter [1971]:
A first-rate, tough-minded movie with a merciless performance by Michael Caine
Michael Caine plays Jack Carter, a London gang member who specializes in strong arm intimidation. He learns that his younger brother has died in the north of England, in Newcastle, while drunk; maybe a suicide, maybe an accident. Carter, against the wishes of his gang bosses, leaves to find out what happened. He knows his brother never drank. He pokes around, ignores the warnings to lay off from both the Newcastle and London gangs. He figures out who is responsible and, despite murder attempts, starts to take cold-blooded vengeange.

Carter has no remorse. People who help him, people who get in his way, people who try to stop him, all get hurt. Often by Jack Carter; it doesn't make any difference to him. One kid who helps him gets beaten within an inch of his life. Carter is barely sympathetic. He kills a woman with an injection of drugs because she played a part in his brother's youngest daughter being in a porno film making the rounds. But he does it deliberately, for a larger purpose. He's a thug, but cunning, and he doesn't care. One nice touch: he reads Raymond Chandler. On the train ride to Newcastle he's immersed in Farewell, My Lovely.

In the end he succeeds, but pays a price that says irony may be even better than justice.

The look of the movie is grimy and tough. Newcastle is a workingman's town, with pubs that are dirty, featureless council flats, and a lot of concrete. There's no fresh air here, just stale breath and cigarette smoke.

This is one of Caine's great roles. He's utterly believable. A side note, one of the slimiest of the villians, a porn lord, is played by John Osborne, the playwrite who wrote Look Back in Anger.

I can't recommmend this movie enough. Mike Hodges, who directed, also directed Croupier and I'll Sleep When I'm Dead.

Reservoir Dogs (1 Disc Edition) [1991]

Review for Reservoir Dogs (1 Disc Edition) [1991]:
Brilliant Film
I own this DVD at home and in my opinon, this film is brilliant. It has an interesting storyline and I feel that the flashbacks throughout the film are good also, as you learn a bit about some of the characters' background. So what's this film about?

Two gangsters, Joe Cabot (Lawrence Tierney) and his son Eddie (Chris Penn) have six strangers (two Joe and Eddie know personally) to take part in diamond robbery for them. None of these men know each other and are forbidden to reveal any personal information about themselves, such as where they might have grown up, where they might have done time and even their own names. Joe has colour coded these six strangers, and they have to refer to each other as their given names. They are as follows; Mr Brown (Quentin Tarantino), Mr White (Harvey Keitel), Mr Blonde (Michael Madsen), Mr Blue (Eddie Bunker), Mr Orange (Tim Roth) and Mr Pink (Steve Buschemi).

The film begins with all eight of them, sitting together in a cafe, just before the robbery. The film then skips to after the robbery, in which you see right away that the robbery has gone wrong; Mr White is driving a dying Mr Orange to the rendevous point (a warehouse), where they are soon joind by Mr Pink and Mr Blonde. Mr Pink is convinced they were set up, considering how quick the police arrived, as if they were forewarned of the robbery. Were they set up? Or was the cops' timing a coincidence? Well just watch and find out.

The only thing I find dissapointing about this film is that you don't see much of Mr Blue and Mr Brown. It would be interesting to learn a bit about their background. Apart from that I have nothing to critisize.

This is the first film directed by Quentin Tarantino (who has successfully directed other classic films such as Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill and Deathproof) and like I said the film is great, and is a film I recomend to all those who like gangster films.

Review for Columbo - Series 1-7 - Complete:
Five stars for the content, one star for the packaging
If you love Columbo - and you should, for it is one of the bset TV series ever made - you'll want this set. What's more, it comes at a bargain basement price... but unfortunately also with bargain basement packaging. Well, the packaging is unimportant, you may think, with content which is quite so superb. Well, yes, but this packaging is way beyond minimalist. The cardboard box which holds the set is very flimsy and will obviously not last long - which is especially bad, since it contains the ONLY imformation in the set on which episodes / series are contained on which disc. The series folders are thin black cardboard and contain NO information whatsoever, not even a number or series title. Therefore, with the folders in the box, and jumbled about [remember they're NOT numbered] you have no option but to sort through all the discs to find the episode you want.
Oh! Just one more thing - There are no scene selections and the DVD menus are also minmalist.
BUT... Even so, you'll want this set - and maybe label or repackage them yourself, as I certainly shall? My wife, well, she's just crazy about this box set.

Training Day [2002]

Our Price: £4.98
Used Price: £1.15

Review for Training Day [2002]:
Ya wanna go home, or ya wanna go to jail?
I can't believe this flick was nearly five years old before I caught it - why on earth didn't anyone recommend it to me before?
I was a little disappointed by the fact that the makers had chosen a white guy to play the role of a prospective undercover narcotics agent, given that the reality of such a situation would call for an officer of colour, and assumed the decision had been an attempt to make the movie more appealing to a wider demographic of audience. But as the film pregresses it's clear why and - ultimately - how sensible this decision was. Hawke brings a youthy, nervous yet courageous portrayal to life in a performance that is matched only by the film's ultimate star, Denzel Washington.
The script is awesome, the action is amazing, the direction is brilliant, in fact I can't praise it enough. It's just a fantastic film. Truly amazing.

Review for Midsomer Murders : The Fourth Collection - A Further 10 Investigations [10 DVD Boxed Set]:
Midsomer Murders: The Fourth Collection
Caroline Graham's detective duo of Barnaby and Troy have become established as one of the hearts of the great British tradition of TV detectives. Arguably, John Nettles' performances (mature and under-stated) rival those of the definitive portrayals of Sherlock Holmes (David Brett) and Poirot (David Suchet).

Marvellous plotting, impressive acting and, of course, some stunning scenery to boot, this box set series of DVD's is thoroughly recommended to lovers of British detective TV.

Review for CSI: Crime Scene Investigation - Season 3 - Part 2 [2001]:
Viva las Vegas! (CSI that is!)
This second part of Season three is very much the same as Season 3 Part One. It's still got great acting, stories et al (see my review of Part One) but the storylines are more involved with the characters as well. A lot of stuff happens to the characters in this block of episodes - Catherine experiences a loss, Grissom gets involved with a woman, Greg gets blown up (nearly) and Sara's dream man isn't all what he seems. To top it all off the last couple of episodes are really picking up pace with an explosion in the crime lab and Gil's hearing causing trouble for him. The last episode ends on a cliffhanger and I ended up sat open mouthed at how they could leave it like that!
Again this DVD is thin on the ground with extras but what there is is decent enough, I just wish they could put more things in.
But this programme is amazing and it makes you wish they would hurry up and release Season 4.

Vertigo [1958]

Our Price: £5.98
Used Price: £3.33
New Price: £3.82

Review for Vertigo [1958]:
Do not look below!
Vertigo is a well chosen word for the atmosphere of this film. San Francisco detective Scottie (James Stewart) chases a suspect on the rooftops of the buildings, he slips and barely holds on the rain gutter of one building. Another policeman comes to his rescue but he slips and gets killed after falling down. Scottie is deeply affected from this experience and he resigns from the force to open up his own detective agency. One friend of his hires him to guard his wife. What from? Evil spirits that engulf her! Funny enough Scottie does not believe in heresy but once he focuses on the case he is deeply moved with the situation. The wife of his friend spends hours at a certain museum staring at the same portrait of an aristocrat woman who died a century ago. She imitates her life, even her suicide. Scottie tries to solve the puzzle that he faces and he nearly goes insane.

The film stands out for its making and psychological thriller atmosphere. The double character of Madeleine Elster (Kim Novak) deserves credit. Also we are accustomed to James Stewart more than ever. The vertigo effect throughout the film is very well given. So much so that this film is taught in academies of cinema art. As to the gripping effect of the film the end deserves credit. But there is a notion that distresses me about the film, it is the missing links that are not told in the film. As in a simple mystery police novel the author solves the case with an evidence never mentioned before. As for the final scene I personally think it not appropriate, somewhat unnecessary.

A film that has to be watched but I am not sure I will watch it again.
