Whoa! Plug'n'play right from the box.
I was a little concerned about going for something so cheap, but I needn't have worried! Plugged it in and it worked straight from the box. Played a disc I couldn't play on my previous player and played a region 1 disc without having to change any settings. Well pleased and I haven't even tried all the features yet. Excellent service from PixMania too.3

Good Machine
Couldn't figure out how to set it up then I remembered to look on the reviews on this page and saw the code thing to set it to multi-regional, since then I have purchased two DVDs from the States which both play fine. I have just re-programmed it as I had to unplug it but I have only done so if I needed to.4

I hooked up the Denon via a HDMI lead and set the upscaling to 1080P and the picture was amazing. I then tried playing a DivX file which would occasionally have audio problems and then lip sync issues on my Yamada media center and would have juddery play on my DK DIVX player and I am very happy to say that it played perfectly smoothly.
A few of notes :-
Like most players the upscaling only upscales from SD. If you have a high resolution photo it will displayed in SD resolution and then upscaled so you dont get the full benefit of HD. I believe there are some more expensive players which can do this.
HD DIVX files are not supported.
The player can have compatability problems with some models of Samsung LCD TVs if the upscaling is set to 1080i or 1080p mode.

I bought this player to go with my new 40" LCD HD TV as the old DVD player did not have a HDMI output. I also used to have a 2nd DVD player which could play DivX but that never played smoothly (a common trait on all cheap players it seems).I hooked up the Denon via a HDMI lead and set the upscaling to 1080P and the picture was amazing. This Sony player is very small and light, some might say fragile, made in Hungary and the remote is made in Malaysia. Very easy to set up, just literally plug in and play. Remote allows you to adjust sound, switch between TVs input source (eg. TV or video) and power on/off but there are codes listed in the manual to set these features up for non-Sony TVs, since Sony and Aiwa TVs are already set to default on this player. (NB: Sony owns Aiwa brand).
Tested on the following disc types it passed with flying colours:

VCD ("Boa 8 films" - Avextrax)
DVD-R
DVD+R
R0 ("BBC Crime Traveller" - Revelation)
R1 ("Dark Angel Complete Season 1" - 20th Century Fox)
R1 RCE ("The Breakfast Club" - Universal)

IMPRESSIVE!!!!!!!
I was dubious about purchasing this multiregion player, specially after all the varying reviews (on the silver model and also here). So I’ll probably just add to the confusion ... anyway this one replaced my last multiregion of 6yrs - Hitachi DV-P505E - which was a strong performer and quality user friendly machine. Amazing product - super calm upconverted picture
Did require some adjustments to work with my Panasonic 42PV7 to get acceptable deep black levels (i.e. LOTR). Seems to look best in 1080i, not 1080p. Many cheaper upconverting DVD players looks great in foreground details, but have large"fuzzy/smeared" areas in the (less noticeable) background, but the Oppo DV981HD is sharp and calm all over the screen. Terrible setup menu though.12

Excellent machine!
Hi,I bought this as a supplement to my DVD recorder/Freeview box as I wanted to play region 1 DVDs - it worked right out of the box. It is small, slim and quiet.
It's true I don't much like the menu or, in fact, the whole user interface - but that's just me. It's certainly no problem.
The important thing is that it works - and very well indeed.
