U Go Girl!
...was what I Kept shouting for most of this poignant yet extremely touching film in Tina Turner's struugle to fame and freedom of his abusive husband. There are times I cried in this film, but it all ends well- Tina Turner has the last laugh.

The actors in the films are top notch, and the songs in the film will no doubt get you off the sofa and boogying in no time!

Othello (1990)

Our Price: £14.98
New Price: £7.69

Review for Othello (1990):
Excellent
Excellent cast and performance. The characters are brought to life and the complex relationships between them are well developed. Ian McKellan does an electrifying Iago. Imogen Stubbs brings depth to a very difficult character - Desdimona can be too shallow, but Stubbs gives the character life and vitality to make her real.

The down side is that it looks like a taping of the theater performance. The power that good camera work and sets can bring is lost here. But this is easily made up by the cast.

Review for Andrew Lloyd Webber - The Royal Albert Hall Celebration [1998]:
What a brilliant show.
The show was staged to celebrate Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's birthday and a whole host of stars got together in the Royal Albert Hall.

It was amazing, you could actually think that you were in the Royal Albert hall watching the show, it has in the show Michael Ball, Sarah Brightman, Boyzone, Elaine Paige, Antonio Banderas and many other stars.

The show was spectacular and was a brilliant show which was put together to celebrate Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Birthday. With the Royal Albert Hall as the backdrop and with scenery and lighting to compliment each star who was performing various songs during the show it really did compliment the way that the staging was set.

Review for Urban Jam - Hip Hop Dance with Laya Barak (All Regions)(NTSC) [2007] (NTSC):
Energetic Fun in Dance
This excellent dance instruction DVD starts with a terrific warm-up, that centers on isolations and stretches. In order to do all the stretches full-out, you'd have to be quite limber, but you can do them at your own level, and still get a lot out of it. This warm-up section is good even if you don't want to continue on to the dance routines, as it makes a great morning"wake-up" as well as a relaxing way to get the tension out of your body after a hard day. Loose pants and a soft stretchy top, with sneakers, is what Laya Barak, and her 2 assistants, Jonathan Lee and Eleonora Barbacini are wearing, and the presentation is well done, with simple lighting and camera angles enabling you to see what is being demonstrated clearly. Music is by Jay T. Jenkins and Mervyn Theodopolis Jr. (Warmup), Daryl"D. Roe" Monroe (Beginner & Advanced), and Ray Johnson (Intermediate).

The Beginner routine is easy but fairly long; the choreography flows well though, and the movements are broken down and explained enough to be able to assimilate it and make memorization easier. When performed up to tempo with the music you should be able to dance and enjoy it, and though some dance background would help a lot, enough passion for dance and desire to learn (and enough practice!) will get you through the routine if you are a beginner. The Intermediate picks up the pace a lot, as well as the length of the routine, and the Advanced is jammin'! It's a joy to watch Laya perform this invigorating and innovative dance form. She is a marvelous dancer, who completes every movement to its maximum point with precision and speed, as well as having musicality and that indefinable thing in dance called"line." Bravo Laya!

Review for Nirvana Unplugged In New York [1993]:
(Officially) on DVD at last...
I was beginning to wonder if this was ever going to be released officially
on DVD, partly because it's been broadcast on MTV dozens of times over the years, and as a result many people have copies of it. Until now I've had a good quality stereo VHS copy which I taped of the TV in 1995 but I'll be getting this DVD for sure. It includes(as does the original CD) 2 songs cut from most TV broadcasts of this show namely Something In the Way and Oh Me as well as lots of extra footage all in 5.1 sound, so quite a nice package. This is in my opinion the best MTV Unplugged set along with Alice In Chains Upnlugged which I (slightly) prefer. It's hard to name individual standout tracks as they all work well together, but the opening About a Girl, Come as you are and the David Bowie cover(one of several covers) are particularly good. Highly recommended, 4.5 from me.

Review for Crowded House - Farewell To The World [2006]:
Just awesome
Like some others already posted on here, I will be retiring my VHS copy of this concert. The atmosphere is just brilliant, and I really wish I could have been there to see the event live. We finally caught up with them on their tour this year, and saw them at Thetford with a small 6000people crowd. Having qued for sometime, it was worth it to be right at the front. Although they are all looking slightly older, the old crowded house was still there (although now with a new drummer Known as Max Shredder (ex beck drummer) after the sad suicide of paul Hester) and with a great listing of old and some new stuff they were just superb.
Looking foward to trying to see them again next year, as I am again now a totally hooked crowded house fan. Definately a must see group and a must see DVD.

Review for Queen And Paul Rodgers - Return Of The Champions [2005]:
Exceptional
I was at the Hyde Park concert and I rated it as one of the two best gigs I'd ever been too (Yes at the Birmingham NEC being the other) but this Sheffield gig is at another level! The band are careful not to advertise Paul Rodgers as Freddie Mercury's replacement and he isn't. Instead, for me, his vocals transport the band into a rock supergroup. The arrangement for I Want It All is excellent while Bad Company's Feel Like Making Love and Can't Get Enough rock the house. However, the real showcase for Rodger's combination of power and sensitivity is Show Must Go On ... simply sublime! One can sense the inspiration he brings to Brian May's excellent guitar, and Roger Taylor's superb backing vocals is the icing on the rock cake ... No exaggeration, this is the best DVD I have ever bought!

Otello

Our Price: £3.97
New Price: £3.97

Review for Otello:
Not for the Purists
This film of Verdi's Otello has an awful lot going for it. Ably led by the masterful conducting of Lorin Maazel, the performance enshrines marvellous portrayals of Otello and Desdemona by Domingo and Ricciarelli who deliver performances which both vocally and on the screen often touch greatness. With the typically sumptuous sets of Zefferelli, the film is often quite memorable (for example, at the unforgettable close of the first act).

Yet, as previous reviewers have pointed out, it is indeed a pity that the director chose to cut the Willow Song. That said, with a running time of 1hr 58Mins, Zefferelli wields the axe on Verdi's score with disconcerting ease, with the consequence that the poetic beauty of Boito's libretto and the dramatic sweep of Verdi's music are all but destroyed. A snippet here, a few pages there, barely a scene passes without Zefferelli's meddling; and it's not for dramatic continuity either, as ridiculously, the director insists on inserting two ballet sequences into the action midway throught the first act and after the arrival of Venetian ambassador in Act III. The music, I believe, may have been cribbed from one of Verdi's other operas, but sits uncomfortably within the sublime score of Otello and adds nothing to the dramatic credibility of the action.

Consequently, this is not a film for someone who loves Verdi's opera. As an introduction to Otello, Verdi or even the genre of opera itself, I cannot think of anything more seductive or appropriate: maybe this was the audience that Zefferelli was targetting and so if you are remotely familiar with Otello, I suspect that you will be disappointed with this film, more disconcerted by the director's habitual butchering of the score than seduced by the undeniably beautiful film sequences. No, if you insist upon a film of Otello, I would point the reader in the direction of Herbert von Karajan's early 1970's effort, undeniably flawed and with minor cuts of its own, but with even finer performances by Mirella Freni as Desdemona and Jon Vickers as Otello than here and accompanied by the incomparably grand Berlin PO, it is an altogether more faithful rendering of this wonderful opera and the more moving for that. However, if it is Domingo that you want, then the televised transmissions with Levine from The Met, Muti from La Scala and, to a slightly lesser extent, Solti at Covent Garden, are all superior to what's on offer here.

Overall, I'm glad to have seen this film, but I love Verdi's Otello too much to ever want to see Zefferelli's Otello ever again.

Zappatastic
Absolutely fantastic. Performances by Napoleon Murphy Brock really shine; the man has so much drive and energy. Dweezils & Steve Vai guitar solo's are out of this world and every Zappa fan will appreciate the complex noodling & comedy aspects of the performances. If you were fortunate to see them on tour last year this will bring back great memories and you will find yourself watching the DVD over and over. I took the wife and a few friends to Manchester to see the gig and they are now Zappa converts. All the performers are world class musicians in their own right.

A must for every Zappa fan.

Peter & The Wolf - Sergei Prokofiev [2006]

New Price: £11.97

Review for Peter & The Wolf - Sergei Prokofiev [2006]:
This has done Prokofiev proud!
What a fantastic short film!

I didn't realise this was only 30 minutes long, but it manages to feel like a full length feature because of the exquisite animation and of course the fabulous music.

The main thing that struck me when I started watching this, was the realism of the models used. they are so lifelike in both visuals and movement. Peter himself has the most emotive eyes, every scene where his eyes are visible mesmerises you as a viewer - it really is amazing how this film grips you.

The truth is, if the visuals had been poor, the film would still have been watchable as long as the music was well performed. In this case the music is fantastic and the visuals are the best I've seen in modelwork, this raises this beyond film, beyond art, and into another realm.

I can watch this over and over again. So much attention to detail has been given to this project. Little things such as movements of hands are done brilliantly. One of my favourite images is that of the Duck after Peter is locked back in the yard by his Grandfather. The Duck looks a bit forlorn and stares at the gate wondering if Peter is 'coming back out to play' - he raises his wings slightly a few times, you have to see it to understand exactly what I mean. But it gives the Duck a real feel of character.

I love this film, and hopefully you will too.

Review for Eric Clapton - Crossroads Guitar Festival [2004]:
KILLER CONCERT DVD!
I got this DVD for Christmas and I watched all in one sitting yesterday...

Just brilliant!

There's lots of stuff (even though there are sad omissions, like Jeff Beck), and lots of styles, although blues is obviously the common link...

There's lots of interesting and amazing playing throughout, and even Clapton seems to play with a little more fire than usual...

It was a pity the old bluesmen get so little time, but I enjoyed the whole thing a lot and even those guitarists I didn't know about... made some fine discoveries too, of course...

At some point halfway through watching it, I felt Lynyrd Skynyrd would have fitted the bill just perfect, and I wished they had played there... guitar power they don't lack, that's for sure... and Rossington, Thomasson and Medlocke are all brilliant...

But anyway, even though one wishes it was a 3 DVD set, there's plenty to get one's teeth into...

First off, the bluesmen (Robert Cray, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Vaughan, BB King, Buddy Guy) all put on a beautiful performance and it is very clear they are enjoying themselves, which adds to one's own enjoyment...

Then it's country time!
Watching Dan Tyminski and Ron Block play"I Am A Man Of Constant Sorrow" was pure joy... I loved their guitar styilings and they just sound wonderful.... plus, it's such a great tune... they also play"Road To Nash Vegas", an instrumental where they get to show off their interplay...

Somebody I had never heard of is Vince Gill, but his country songs, and especially the solo on"Oklahoma Borderline" left me in awe...

A nice addition is James Taylor... he gets to play some blues side by side with Joe Walsh, who just can't stop being the goof he's always been and who puts some of the best performances on the DVD,"Funk 49" and"Rocky Mountain Way"... Walsh is always great to see live...

John Mayer was another unknown for me... he's very young but classy and passionate... I enjoyed his performance...

There was also Steve Vai and his band who just floor anyone with their performance... one song is enough to blow you away... intense!

There were lots more great performances: J.J. Cale, Larry Carlton, John McLaughlin...

Highlights for me were the bluesmen... Clapton's own performances and his collaboration with Santana on a scorching"Jingo"... Tyminski & Block... Vince Gill... plus Joe Walsh... Vai... McLaughlin... and an Indian player called Vishwa Mohan Batt, who plays a veena that he built himself out of a guitar.....

Clapton's band puts the finishing touches to the show..... or so it seems because after him, comes one of the absolute best moments in the DVD, when the lights dim and a voice comes out of the speakers:"Señores y señoritas.... it's fiesta time!"

Of course, it's that"little old band from Texas", ZZ TOP!

It's such a damn shame they get so little time in the DVD, because their performance is hugely enjoyable and you can see the big Dallas crowd having fun with the band...

Yes, it should have been a 3 DVD set!

Ben Folds Five - The Complete Sessions At West 54th [1998]

Our Price: £5.98
Used Price: £4.99
New Price: £5.25

Review for Ben Folds Five - The Complete Sessions At West 54th [1998]:
Magical
If you can, get a solely audio recording of this performance to listen to - all the songs have fantastically more energy than on albums, and are a delight to listen to as ever - sunny, happy music. On screen, it's great to watch - Ben Folds Five do some interesting things live, e.g. the reed/keyboard instrument in"Steven's Last Night in Town", and the singing from all three is top notch. You'll want an audio copy to listen to away from your screen.

There are also some fun extras, fairly low quality but amusing all the same; other performances, the band improvising on joke TV shows and driving motorcycles ("my machine!").

Of particular interest is"Theme from Dr. Pyser"; a pastiche of 1950's American TV themes like"Mission Impossible", but actually better than all of them. Really extremely good.

AC/DC - Live At Donington

Our Price: £5.97
Used Price: £3.50
New Price: £5.92

Review for AC/DC - Live At Donington:
Genius, absolutely!
Hello all. I must say I'm so glad I bought this - after some of the negative views by others who don't really know what they're talking about... on the question of over dubbing:

The only problem with the DVD is that there is a danger it is a bit over produced - too many cameras and angles, but this can be justified by the size of the stage and trying to cover all of the action (especially keeping track of Angus!)

The other thing to take into account is that these guys have been going 30 years and have developed such a unique and tight sound that it is often hard for people to believe that this is actually a LIVE! peformance (There would be huge legal implications for Sony/Epic if they used studio recordings - believe me, they just wouldn't do it! Especially with the laws on this sort of thing being tightened up)

Also, there are problems with bounce back from the gigantic speakers filling the park which means you'll occasionally get problems with camera angles and the sound matching up.

There have been comparisons with the Led Zeppelin DVD but this is impossible- the settings are completely different, the music is completely different etc etc but both prove that the bands of old just have something that bit extra than all of the current drossy, samey, weak stuff out today.

Angus is know as one of the best guitarists of our time (along with Page and Hendrix) because of the technical, note perfect everytime, genius riffs that he can play for hours on end without ever missing a beat - another reason that this isn't overdubbed.

This is a collosal DVD and well worth the money (disregard the nay-sayers) - It even got my old gran (she's 92) out of her wheelchair and through all of the arthritic pain - she was goose stepping and head banging along with Angus! Sure, I had to call the ambulance afterward, but she had a smile on her face as she was being stretchered out. Young and old, all will enjoy!
