At least Donny can sing the chords and with fun...Jason 'sings?'
Maria Freudman is just superb as a narrator. How can you call her singing operatic...it is simply musical style. I am not old enough to have experienced original version, but love the light hearted nature of the piece. 4 star because there is no SUBTITLES on the DVD for sing-a-long.
Better than Jason or Phillip life on stage.

Chaps, wise up. View this as a simple fun for family viewing and enjoy it. My 5 year old has worn out the vhs so badly that I have had to purchased the dvd version. The older 8 year old has reached her saturation point. At least Donny can sing the chords and with fun...Jason 'sings?'

A Rock 'N' Roll Legend Compilation
This two-film set chronicles the life of a discontented, directionless youth, who somewhat aimlessly dreams of being a famous"Rock and Roll" star. It's gritty and realistic in atmosphere, as well as its depiction of the experiences that lead up to the young man's achievement of his dream. David Essex plays innocence, streetwise savvy and jaded overindulgence with equal conviction. The progression of his character is charming, seamless and convincing. Without giving anything away, this morality tale, when both films are seen in succession, is something wondrous to behold. In short I was very impressed, by the material, music and all the performances, which were uniformly excellent. Two thumbs up, as the critics would say...25

In case you are new to the story, basically C.K. Dexter-Haven (Bing Crosby) and Tracy Samantha Lord (Grace Kelly) are divorced. Tracy is getting married again. The clan is gathering. We watch as they go through the motions and emotions of courting and reevaluating their lives.

Worth re-watching.
By now you know this is a remake of"The Philadelphia Story" and may have a tendency to compare them. I did this my self at first; then I realized they each have their strong points. I even get them mixed up now and them. All you have to do is remember this is the musical. My favorite song in the list is"True Love". Of course as with everything different people are bound to have different favorites and there are plenty to chose from.In case you are new to the story, basically C.K. Review for Cabaret - 30th Anniversary Special Edition [1972]:
And then there's Liza Minnelli--strictly as a musical performer, she's quite good in the lighter numbers, particularly"Money, Money" with Gray--but the title song and the ballad"Maybe This Time" bring out her soggiest please-love-me mannerisms. And in the dramatic sequences, sharply written by Jay Presson Allen and an uncredited Hugh Wheeler, she is too cute, too shrill, and finally too nice to be playing the casually-awful Sally Bowles. When she drops York at the end of the film, almost as casually as she picked him up at the beginning, it doesn't ring true.
Ultimately, this film is a bit sad, because it suggests that Fosse's talents went far beyond simple razzle-dazzle. He had it in him to be a serious filmmaker on a range of subjects, and he never quite moved beyond his show-biz turf to explore those talents. Which is a pity, especially when you consider that smaller talents such as Coppola and Scorcese were allowed to become the New Face of American Cinema . . .

Almost Perfect
If you could another leading lady into this film, it would be just about perfect; Bob Fosse not only handles the musical sequences in this film deftly, but he creates the chaotic whirl of a disintegrating Weimar Germany quietly and sharply. And most of the actors more than distinguish themselves; Michael York as the Oxford graduate out to see a bit of life and getting more than he bargained for; Joel Gray as the death's-head Emcee of the Kit-Kat Klub, the voice of a cynical, corrupt society that ultimately, in the wake of the Nazi triumph, will seem like a lost paradise of sorts; Fritz Wepper as the dapper gigolo with a heart, and Marisa Berenson as the elegant Jewish heiress to whom he loses that heart. And then there's Liza Minnelli--strictly as a musical performer, she's quite good in the lighter numbers, particularly"Money, Money" with Gray--but the title song and the ballad"Maybe This Time" bring out her soggiest please-love-me mannerisms. Review for Fame [1980]:
Second to none
This movie which I went to see at the cinema on its original release in 1980 (possibly 1981), was for me a great film then and its a great film now. Sure its a little dated in parts but thats when you look at the technology and the clothing. There was no Internet, no CD's no walkmans, no ipods but disco was still about and rap music wasn't around so yeah it was different time but the energy from the film allows you to ignore all that and just breath in all the talent on show within the film. Looking at the film again you pick up on some of the background characters in the film but the best bit in the film has to be the hot lunch jam session and I know they don't really do that in the cafeteria at music school but I wish they did. Do todays kids have the same talent as those in the film I am not so sure as they have way too many other distractions. Fame is the best.29

I was always a fan of the original LP (a 12" plastic disc that some of you may remember), but this DVD takes us to a whole new level. The sound and picture are first class, the performance of the musicians are second to none and the production is astonishing. I just wish I had been present at this recording. If this ever goes on tour again, I will be first in line for a ticket.30

An Unsung Gem
This little gem of a musical cannot be recommended more. It stars Rick Moranis as geeky Seymour, a guy whose totally in love with his sweet co-worker Audrey. However, she is in a relationship with an abusive dentist. When a talking plant appears from outer space though, things have got to change for the better, right? An astonishingly original concept - which was actually borrowed from the horror original by Roger Corman, with an early appearance by Jack Nicholson - is brought to life by Frank Oz, director of The Dark Crystal and Bowfinger, also starring Steve Martin. The songs are outstanding and are performed with much gusto by the leading actors, particularly Ellen Greene, who reprises the role of Audrey which she played in the stage version. The film was not a huge success when it was first released, but has rightly established a cult following since then. Long may it continue!31
Review for Gaetano Donizetti - La Fille du régiment / Dessay, Florez, Palmer, Corbelli, French, Campanella, Pelly (Royal Opera House 2007):
This is a lyrical tour de force. How does Natalie Dessay manage to control her voice whilst lying down or being thrown around? Juan Diego Flores is a delight and in fine voice and the supporting cast is wonderful.
A not-to-be-missed masterpiece by Donizetti.

Extraordinary and Unique
Saw this last night and I was spellbound. It won't be everyone's cup of tea but I adored it. Cate Blanchet, Ben Whishaw, Christian Bale, and the very young Marcus Carl Franklin (superb) were all outstanding. The impressionistic film portrayed the times and Dylan's world beautifully. What can I say - keep an open mind and try to see this on a large screen with good sound. Otherwise you may not"be there".33
Review for Calamity Jane [1953]:
True, there are some weak points - Howard Keel is under-used, and some of the songs are a little weak ("My heart is higher than a hawk") - To quote Howard himself at one of his concerts,"What was that one about?". And one is left with the feeling that the film wanted to be Annie Get Your Gun, but didn't quite make it.
But this is more than made up for by the shining light of Doris Day, who with the energy and the (often overlooked)comic talent she posessed gives us some memorable moments to treasure. Also her rare gift with a ballad was never shown better on film than with Secret Love, one of her most iconic songs.
Doris Day's best? Probably.
Howard Keel's? Nope - try Seven Brides.
Top Ten Musical? No. But it should still make it into any Musicals collection for the quality of the central performance

Doris hits a high note
This movie can lay claim to be Doris Day's greatest work. And for someone with a career that lasted decades, and saw her be the number one movie, tv and recording star during that time, that is saying something.True, there are some weak points - Howard Keel is under-used, and some of the songs are a little weak ("My heart is higher than a hawk") - To quote Howard himself at one of his concerts,"What was that one about?". Superb production
A very well directed version sung in English. As part of the plot our heroes have to end World War One (makes more sense than the original Mason undertones). It's well sung and the sets are stunning. The World War One battlefields (complete with a version of the Angel of Mons) make far more sense than Branagh's As You Like It in Japan. It's a nice intimate opera, which avoids the proscenium arch view. And there's a cameo performance from Liz Smith as the crone-Papagena. I don't know the opera exhaustively so I don't know if there is anything that would offend the purists, but I found it very entertaining.35

Review for Paint Your Wagon [1970]:
"No Name City" is established right there at the site of the grave as the funeral party spot gold glittering in the dug-over soil. There are lots of opportunities to laugh right through the film. Listen for the appalling"English" accents courtesy of Mad Jack and his friends. They're so bad they're funny. I'd like to list some of my favourite scenes, but there are so many, I'll just mention one. Look out for Ben's insane jealousy rage soon after he marries Elizabeth and the town meeting where the men have to decide what to do about it.
If you haven't watched it yet, it's time you did.

Even though it's a musical
This is a very funny and highly entertaining film about the day to day lives of a group of people who establish a mining town in the time of the American gold rush. The film is excellent despite being a musical rather than because of it. To be fair, one or two of the songs are passingly good, but not being a fan of the musical film genre myself, it's everything else about this film that I like. The humour starts right at the very beginning, when one of the wagons from a party of farmers and settlers travelling west, careers down a steep hill to where the gold prospector, Ben Rumson is leading his mule. There's a shouted conversation with each word separated by a short pause to make themselves understood over the distance. Wagon train spokesman:"IS - THEY - DEAD?" Rumson: "THEY - BETTER - BE --- COS - I'M - GONNA - BURY - 'EM!" The burial is several laughs in quick succession, so it's best to take a deep breath as soon as Ben starts the prayer."No Name City" is established right there at the site of the grave as the funeral party spot gold glittering in the dug-over soil. There are lots of opportunities to laugh right through the film. Listen for the appalling"English" accents courtesy of Mad Jack and his friends. They're so bad they're funny. Review for Company - A Musical Comedy [2007]:
Like the previous reviewer, I can't find the extra features. I am particularly keen to see the 38-minute interview with Sondheim. Reading through the reviews on the U.S. amazon site, I notice some of the reviewers allude to the extras, so they obviously do exist! If anyone could shed some light on this, I'd be extremely grateful. Thanks.

Howard Keel and Co. are as spectacular as ever- The dancing, acrobatics and athleticism all contribute to an overall fun-filled exhibition and a fantastic story.
I must have watched this film about 30 times and it still doesn’t get boring- there is always something new to see in the background or you notice a new dancing step from another brother. It is not very often that you find such a multi-talented cast all in one place!

i LOVE to be in america!!!
As a teenager acting in the show of West Side Story I found that this film is the best of the rest. Watching the film before producing the play was very helpful as the acting was superb and the music was amazing. The play is one of the best around and the script is just magical. I have to say though, the music and songs were the most enjoyable. I will never forget the play and the joy of being in the musical. The best in the business. Buy it.40
