New Price: £9.98

Review for Futurama - The Beast with a Billion Backs [2008]:
An great addition to the world of futurama
The Beast With a Billion Backs is an improvement on the already high standards of Bender's Big Score. Its plot and pacing are better suited to the feature-length format, and its romantic theme draws on the most touching elements of the television series. The dynamic between Fry and Leela is what makes Futurama more than a sci-fi spoof and remains an insistent argument for the continuation of the phenomenon.

I would urge all Futurama fans to buy the first two straight to dvd films, as well as the two that are to come. Even if you have reservations about how the show works in this format, Fox will view strong DVD sales will be the single most convincing argument in favour of bringing Futurama back as a full blown TV series. This happened when Family Guy was cancelled (in my opinion a far inferior series which relies heavily on derivative humour and cut-away gags that The Simpsons abandoned after its first few seasons.)

Encourage your friends to buy these DVDs, and indeed the boxsets of the first four series. We all know that Futurama is too special a series for us to let it fade Into the Wild Green Yonder.

Doctor Who - Series 4 Vol.4 [2008]

Our Price: £11.98
New Price: £11.98

Review for Doctor Who - Series 4 Vol.4 [2008]:
Climatic ending to series 4
The final three episodes of Series 4 have got to have been the most dramatic and thrilling yet! Linking the whole bad wolf phenomena into the stories was also a nice little nod back to the first two series, of course you couldn't leave it out with the return of Rose! True the massive cast in the final episodes did lead to the problem of developing everyone's stories equally but it has to be said that it was superb to see Torchwood, Sarah jane and Doctor who converging in one programme. The daleks were once again a brilliant force in the episode and with Davros's return too!, well the writers obviously eren't pulling any punches.
But perhaps the best aspect of these final episodes was the acting of Tennant and Tate. Although many have reacted negatively to Catherine in the series, I feel the opposite, and after perhaps a shaky start, she really manages to develop Donna's character into a blossoming peice of acting in the last episode. For a series that continues to improve, she has brought a fantastic new style to the companion/ Doctor relationship and I can only complement her on her performance especially in this finale! Well Done!
Over all, this would be well worth he buy, with a fabulous mix of good acting and dramatic story lines. Now we wait for the Christmas special with baited breath.

Review for Iron Man (with Free Marvel Iron Man Comic Book, Exclusive to Amazon.co.uk):
The man in the techno mask.
It's reasonably clean family viewing if you're into super heroes and big boy's toys. Well I liked it!
It's worth watching just to see the suit being fitted to Tony Stark (Rob Downey jr).

Iron man is pretty 2d character in the comics (in my opinion), but thanks to the marvels of CGI the best thing about him - his suit - is brought marvelously to life. Add to that some good performances from Downey and Co, plus a half decent plot and you get a pretty good movie.

I saw this at the cinema and loved it! I saw The Dark Knight on the other hand and was disappointed. This is comic book escapism and good clean fun (if memory serves me right) and stands comfortably besides Spiderman and the newer Superman movie.

In short, I recommend it!

Review for Battlestar Galactica: Season 3 [2006] [2004]:
You'll watch this because of the first two series but it's nowhere near as good
It seems that the writers may have taken themselves a bit too seriously in this installment, because the pacing is incredibly slow. The religious and political aspect of the show takes on a far greater role, and as a result the balance of the show is greatly interrupted. There is far less action, and this is replaced with long, drawn out and wordy scenes which in my opinion are very pompous indeed. Also, the plot lines are a lot less strong-there are some episodes where you just think"oh please, this is just ridiculous." One very important episode springs to mind-the whole series could come to a close, but the ending is preposterous, and is just glossed over, then things move on to the next episode (trying not to include spoilers here). You'll watch it because you have to in order to keep up with the series, but it really is pretty poor in comparison to the first 2 series.

Star Wars Episode 3 : Revenge of the Sith (2 Disc Edition) [2005]

Review for Star Wars Episode 3 : Revenge of the Sith (2 Disc Edition) [2005]:
AN EMPIRE RISES!!
Id have to say that this is my favourite of the saga.
Darker & more intense than the other episodes, this is light years beyond the simplistic narrative of the 1977 original.
Main highlight for me is the career defining performance of Ian McDiarmid as the evil Darth Sidious/Emperor Palpatine. Absoluteley OWNS this film!!
Hayden Christiansen is a very average actor but there was major improvement from Attack Of The Clones and the scenes with him & McDiarmid sparkle.
The plot is brilliant and the FX are superb. John Williams's score may just be the finest of all 6 movies!
My favourite scenes are Order 66, where in true Night Of The Long Knives style, Palpatine eliminates the Jedi & consolidates his Empire and the final scenes where Palpatine, Vader and Tarkin oversee the construction of The Death Star from the bridge of an Imperial Star Destroyer. Class!
I absoluteley love the music to this scene too!
And lets not forget the graphic scenes of Vader's immolation & the extreme surgery as Palpatine's medical droids rebuild this tragic character into The Dark Lord...
There's some stunning lightsaber duels that are second only to The Phantom Menace in intensity. And the CGI work is way better than episodes 1 & 2.
2 things id recommend - read the novelisation, it offers some fascinating insights into the relationships of the Sith protagonists, Palpatine/Sidious, Dooku/Tyrannus & Skywalker/Vader that were not as detailed in the movie.
Also, any Metal/Rock fans might enjoy a video that i found on YouTube which is Metallica's Master Of Puppets set to a montage of scenes from Star Wars (mostly episode 3) featuring Palpatine/Sidious. It goes really, really well, the lyrics and all. The True Master Of Puppets!!

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones [2002]

Our Price: £8.48
Used Price: £4.59
New Price: £8.47

Review for Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones [2002]:
not great, not even good...but still better than the Phantom Menace
Hype, or hyperbole to give it its full title, is defined as a figure of speech in which statements are exaggerated, and is used to evoke strong feelings and create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally. Lets be honest here, with that definition I could have described any of the Star Wars movies, and if anything has been associated with so much hype it makes your head spin, it has been these movies, in particular the so called prequels. However, other words are also associated with these films, words such as disappointment and anger, especially after the travesty of a movie that was the Phantom Menace, so it was with some trepidation that I came to the second of the movies.
To briefly sum up, Attack of the Clones deals with the ongoing attempts by the dark lord of the Sith to fracture the federation so that he can step in and sieze power, using a rebel jedi Count Dooku (Christopher Lee) as his cats-paw, whilst the true jedi attempt to hold things together and stave of the inevitable war. Along the way we are treated to several bits of Star Wars history, including the precursor to the infamous storm troopers in the shape of the Clones, a huge army that is being secretly built by agents unknown, and the romance between Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman), and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christenson), a romance that we know will only end in tragedy.
Unfortunately, the film is just such an ungodly mess that it is hard to really give a damn about any of it. The plot rattles along at such a pace that it is sometimes dizzying, with revelations coming on top of revelations as deep dark secrets are exposed and plots uncovered with such ease that it makes you wonder how they have remained secret for this long (apparently, no one in the Star Wars universe understands the concept of security). The cast do their best with some hackneyed dialogue (even Ewan McGregor as Obi-wan does not come out of this looking or sounding good). Samuel Jackson as jedi Mace Windu is pretty good, but the real problem with the film is the love story between Anakin and Padme. Instead of a gradual, believable romance, these two spell their feelings out in long winded conversations, laying everything on the table and spouting some of the most cringe worthy platitudes I have ever heard in a movie. Portman looks great but spends an awful lot of the movie staring wistfully of into the distance or at Anakin, and whilst I have seen Hayden Christenson in Shattered Glass, so I know he can act, in this movie he has all the acting ability of a lump of wood.
Even the special effects grate after a while. The battle between the clone army and the droid army of Dooku never looks anything less than impressive, but this is exactly what we have come to expect, and the speeder chase through the towers of the Coruscant cityscape is annoying in its frivolousness. Even watching a small army of jdei's cut loose cannot lift this film above at best the mundane. On the plus side this film is better than the simply awful Phantom Menace, but once again this is a film that does much to damage the reputation of the cherished originals.

Review for Torchwood: Complete BBC Series 2 Box Set (2008) [2006]:
This review is for the actual dvd content
The second series of Torchwood marks a distinct improvement on the rather patchy first series. I won't go into plot details as other reviewers have already done that. Instead I will concentrate on the dvd set itself. The packaging is rather cheap looking and is made from cardboard with an awful red cover with just the Torchwood logo on it. The main let down for me is there are no audio commentary tracks on any of the episodes. One of the highlights of the first series dvd set was the highly entertaining commentary tracks by cast and crew. Why BBC dvd havn't included them on this release is beyond me. What you do get is some deleated scenes (always welcome), out-takes, a Captain Jack doccumentary and the Torchwood Declassified (regretfully the cut down versions). So all in all a pritty good dvd set episode wise but not the most exciting extras ever. Oh, and don't let the garish packaging put you off either.

This is a brilliant series. It has wonderful acting, writing, directing, special effects and music. It blends horror, comedy, emotion, family drama, action, mystery and suspense perfectly. I would recommend this as it is an excellent drama series which has been missed by a lot of people because of the lack of publicity compared with other shows. This is the best programme on TV!

I Am Legend [2007]

Review for I Am Legend [2007]:
Not quite one star.....
Not quite one star, but I will award this two.

I won't bleat on about CGU which I personally loath in the way it's included in most films these days, but cut to the chase....

(Spoilers)

1: Apparently New York's streets are thin enough to allow vegetation to grow through them in three years... if this is true, so be it, but the depiction in the film looks very poor, and distracting.

2: We are led to believe Smith is a sole survivor of the virus, and he has been broadcasting radio messages for three years to advise others of his presence. Completely unblelievably, at one point in the film, another survivor (and child no less) are introduced. This is by means of the other person saving Smith from certain death.
Where on earth had this person been? Did they tune in to a radio after three years? Had they been tracking Smith over a long period?
Simply, a ridiculous script.
3: New York is abandoned, but, apparently, all the power supplies are in good order (at least for Smith's apartment) as he is able to run industrial quantities of equipment as he seeks a vaccine.
Again, totally incredulous.

and finally, the ending (standard) is just plain ridiculous. It's as if someone said 'That's it' and they just decided to come up with some silly paragraph of speech for the ending.

I give an extra star as Smith does a reasonable enough job in the movie, but, it's no more than a 'wash over the head' flick for me.

The best of the Resident Evil movies, this film has plenty of top action and a good amount of salivating zombies getting creatively hacked up. Review for Doctor Who : Complete BBC Series 4 [2008]:
Entertaining but at times dissapointing
This season of Doctor who was a real mixed bag for me. I'm a massive Dr Who fan and love the show it is by far the best thing on british TV and along with Torchwood the only reason i pay my TV liscence. Lets break it down breifly by episode. Partners in crime (Awful) the worst opener ever!! Catherine Tate at her shouty worst, poor aliens, silly idea and i thought Sarah Lancashire looked pretty evil and was wasted in such a poor story. Fires of Pompeii (in the words of the doctor Brilliant) after such a poor start a cracking second episode, great story/effects, ideas catherine is less shouty and is growing into the role. Planet of the Ood (Good) liked this episode a lot again great ideas and story, i was glad to see the back drop of the Ood expanded upon and a non earth based story (not enough of these in my opinion). The sonatrons(OK) Nice to see another classic character get a re-vamp i don't like the Unit Martha Jones much preferred her as the doctors assitant, felt it dragged a bit over two episodes, some good effects. The doctors daughter (Brilliant) I loved this episode and i get shot down in the forums all the time yes i know it's flawed but great story. Unicorn and the wasp (Poor) I love the historical episodes but this wasn't for me clever writing tying in the agatha Christie disappearance but i thought the effects and alien part of the story were poor. Silence in library/Forest of dead (Brilliant) I'm a big fan of Steven Moffets episodes and these didn't dissapoint scary, edgy mysterious a few story flaws (How did the Vasta Nevada survive 100 years with no food source) but that aside really entertaining if this is what we have to look forward to in two years time can't wait. Midnight (Brilliant) Russell T Davis best episode (there haven't been many) great acting Tennant excels and shows real acting class (needs to stay for series 5 with strong storys will have a real claim as best doctor ever.
Turn left (Really good) i was not looking forward to this episode as Catherine Tate was the lead on her own but was really surprised i think it was this episode where i finally warmed to her as the doctors companion great story idea (two in a row for RTD saving the best til last almost.) Two things let it down poor beetle effects, and lack of real explanation of how Rose knows and why unit trusts her.
The finale (Sometimes brilliant sometimes OK) I good go on all day about the finale, i didn't see the need for all the characters to be in it, in the 1st part at times it felt like the characters were all viaing for equal screen time rather than moving the story along, after all the build up i was dissapointed with the shadow proclimation, bit of a non entity, the supreme dalek had nothing supreme about him other than what looked like additional jewelery, if jack dies in a furnace how comes his clothes aren't burnt, Martha might as well not have been used the whole osterhagan key was nonsense, and the control console in the dalek chamber the three doctors use looks like it was made on blue peter. That all said great cliff hanger, i looked the two doctor's part and the Doctordonna angle, Julian bleach was great as Davros and on the whole the episodes were entertaining.
The Russell T Davis era is now over with the exception of a few specials and i thank him for bringing who back (Absorbaloff and Slithean aside.) But this wasn't the best of Series (2 has been the best in my opinion), i think steven moffat will take the show to next level role on series 5, oh yeah and DAVID PLEASE STAY.

Review for Star Trek - The Film Collection [1979]:
Cant Get Much Better
This is an essential purchase for any self respecting star trek fan, needless to say, and even if u arent a"trekkie" this is still bloody brilliant value! i mean you get the special editions for all ten movies (2 discs for each movie! unbelieveable amount of extras right here). ok, 50 pound is stil a fair amount of money and not all of the movies are here great, but considering exactly what you get here, and the general quality of the movies themselves, not to mention the overall presentation of the set (beautiful, chunky yet somehow still fairly slim generally fantastic looking thing)means that this is a serious bargain for money. Below is my opinion and small review of each individual movie.

The Motion Picture - U - 07/10 - in my opinion betetr than most people think it is: very talky and doesnt make great use of characters, but it has a certain charm about it that still makes it a great watch.

The wrath of Khan - 12 - 10/10 - the daddy of em all. not much to say except that it is a brilliant, intense and seriously thrilling chase movie that, unusually for star trek, gives u some genuine emotional moments as well, as well as humanising the main cast (though mostly only Bones, spock and kirk) than u may be used to.

The search for spock - PG - 09/10 - Great movie as well as being quite dark it carries on the slightly more emotional character based substance of the previous movie and develops on it a bit. overall great movie with brilliant action scenes, and some genuinly intense moments.

The Voyage home - PG - 09/10 - another brilliant movie: very different, little in the way of emotional kicks or intensity, but ENDLESSLY entertaining and as funny as anything. Quite feel good in a lot of parts as well. entertainement doesnt get much more literally entertaining than this.

The final fronteir - PG - 05/10 - def the worst trek movie, it undos all the progress the movies had really amde in humanising the characters, showing them to be at times stunningly stupid and the whole boring, dragging unfunny mess leaves a bad taste in the mouth

The Undiscovered country - 08/10 - ah, this is more like it! not quite as good as movies 2-4, but still great stuff, excellent for its potrayal of kirks racist side, has some great drama in there occasionally: all in all, some emotional bits, an interesting plot and some exciting moments really keep you entertained and thrilled throughout

Generations - 09/10 - i know i will be lambasted for this, but i dont care, i LOVE this movie! a lot of people point to the rather empty story but i dont care! it was the first star trek movie i ever saw and to this day i still find it to be one of the series most intense, entertaining and best acted movies, even if kirks (spoiler) death was unspectacular.

First contact - 09/10 - great stuff here, great stuff. This is defintely an action based movie, but it throws in some nice character moments here and there and some neat comedy, which all adds up to an awesomly entertaining sci-fi action movie.

Insurrection - 07/10 - lot of people dont like this and i can understand that, its plot is seriously thin, and the comedy is frankly weak, but there is just something about this that i like: i can watch it without getting bored: nothing perticularly brilliant about this, but its a good, entertaining sci-fi morality fable.

Nemesis - 05/10 - god, what a crappy note to go out on! it aims to be really dark, and just seems like its trying to be hard, it aims for a realtively complex story and its effect is an uninterested meh. some good scenes, but its a reallt very tried, boring seeming movie that does little to advance any of the characters, who all seem a tad like carictatures (sorry if the spelling is wrong) by this point, for some reason. generally fairly bad movie.

So there u go, hope my review has helped u. all i can say is this is a great bunch (for the most part) of movies available with excellent extras, in an awesome box, for a seriously good price. take advantage of this price, who knows how long it will last.
