LIFE OF TOSHIBA HD-EP35

Received HD-EP35 on Tues 25 Mar 08. Was a little miffed to see the box had been punctured on the underside of the box. Now I could have swore an made a very rude phone call an got upset over it, However all appeared well albeit couriers need to take it easy with peeps goods.

The unit is a sleek design in piano black finish. The instructions were easy to follow, it took less than 5 minutes register online and check for updates, a further 5 mins to hook up and be on my network for firmware updates there were 2 tho 1 only was required. Once completed an setup finished I finally unwrapped Transformers, I had been waiting a long time to see this in HD, the machine exploded into life with sound (from Pioneer VSX-908RDS THX) an picture (from Samsung LE37M87BDX LCD) and was awsome, it has played flawlessly so far. Standard DVD's on this are absolutely fine upscalng is impressive at 1080p/24. In my opinion this is a nice piece of kit at a very reasonable price (£119 from amazon).


On Thurs I will be adding a Pioneer VSX-1017 (Home Cinema Choice's Best Buy May 2008 issue) which will give me True HD sound. This will complete my HD Setup.

I am fully aware that BluRay v HD DVD war has been settled, I had been getting HD DVDs for nearly 9 months as this IMHO is the better format. I also own a Playstation 3 & 8 BluRay films, I will enjoy comparing both formats.

Great picture, nice looking unit

Very impressed with the picture quality from this player - it looks extremely nice on our current 1080i TV using HDMI and makes DVDs look very nearly HD quality (I assume it'll look even nicer in 1080p on a suitable TV). Picture quality is noticeably better than our previous upscaling DVD player - an Xbox 360 - and we're now enjoying watching DVDs in peace without the 360's fan-assisted soundtrack.

The option to view the picture in various zoomed modes is very handy - particularly with 4:3 DVDs which can be shown correctly with black bars either side, zoomed in to the centre or stretched (which seems to be the default - and only - mode on a lot of other players).

The player itself is solidly built, has a very useful screen and looks very classy with its completely plain black front - I think it's definitely an improvement from the 1080P7. The controls on the front panel are minimal, though, so if you lose the remote then you're going to be stuck with very basic functionality. Boot time isn't the quickest around, but it's not long enough to complain about.

One thing to note is that the unit I received didn't have component outputs (as stated on Amazon's listing at time of writing). It does have digital audio outputs, L+R phonos and a composite output, but if I'd bought it expecting to use component cables then I'd be stuck.

An expensive and average gadget

The number of bad points is equal to that of the good.

Bad points. Poor picture quality (picture has lots of visible 'grid' lines. Picture is either 'stretched' or 'squashed' (whichever aspect you choose). Multiple car reader doesn't seem 'safe' to use (when inserting any type of card). Sound is tinny. USB port has a 'protective' rubber hood that looks easy to pull off.

Good points. Multiple card reader. USB port. 2x headphone jacks (great sound). Jog proof (seems to be holding out). Very portable (for the people 'on the go'). Buttons are logically laid out and with a good range of functions. Love the twistable screen.

Durability. Well this is the next test because it doesn't look to be the most solidly built player I've seen.

ADS DVD Express DX2

I wanted to record 8mm video to DVD. Initially I was quite pleased with the results but as I tried to improve what I was producing the software became very limiting. For instance, I wanted to add different videos to the same DVD with a icon for each but I could not do it. I then found I could do this with free software from when I bought the Dell. However the worst aspect is the juddering of video if the shot is fast moving. This results in an inferior DVD to the original recording.

not that impressed (yet)

I've only had this player 2 days but I must say my first impressions are not that great. On paper this machine seems to do everything, but I took a risk buying it as I couldn't find any reviews for it online. My first comment is that it's so s......l......o.......w. Put in a DVD movie and it takes an age for the menu to appear. Once playing a movie things are not much better. The 1080p upscaling (via HDMI) seems to work - however Iam not sure it's any better than the xbox360 over VGA.

The user interface looks dated and again is very slow to nativate around. I've yet to attempt any recording, but I hope it will score better in that area! So far only 3 stars (for HDMI output and styling).

great product...

Really great product 4 sale here seen a few portable dvd players, and this seems even better than normal.
Havent yet found a disk it wont play and to top it all ya got 300 games on a disk 2 which is great the games are like old nintendo nes games etc brings back alot of memories thanx again great product.
The only draw back as a taxi driver with 1 of these is actually pausing it and ernin money.....cheers guys

Good apart from hdmi

This recorder was fine until I decided to use hdmi. Once I had bought the hdmi cale (not supplied) a few days after using/buying this product I noticed a huge problem. Syncing was well out between lips and sound. This only occurs when using the hdmi cable, which kind of defeats the purpose of paying the premium for having an hdmi connection. It was so bad it's like watching a badly dubbed Chinese Karate film from the 80's. Using the composite was fine, no sync problems whatsoever.

In general it was a decent recorder (I returned mine and bought a different brand) let down badly by the hdmi problem. Like I say it's fine if you dont use this, but you are paying a premium for the advertised hdmi socket, and why bother paying this if you dont intend to use it?

My advice is to buy a different product. A firmware update id not fix the issue.

Quality multi-format player at a good price

HDMI upscaling, 7.1 channel output, SACD, DVD-Audio, DivX, XviD, you name it - this plays it.

Not only that, but with extensive menu features to fit whatever type of setup you have - from a simple 4:3 stereo TV to a widescreen monster with a multi-channel amplifier in-between - practically all configurations are catered for.

And the killer feature? A USB connection so you can transfer .AVI movies straight from your PC to the player. No need to convert or burn to CD anymore.

Oppo have really come up trumps with this one. Don't be concerned if you haven't heard of them before, this is a well built piece of kit. And as formats change (such as DivX) the DV-980H can be firmware upgraded via Oppo's website.

Samsung 2.1 speakers

I bought this speaker system to sit alongside my new Samsung TV.
The system does look amazing and is finished in the same high black gloss finish as the TV set.
The sound it produces is exactly what i wanted, rich deep bass and a well defined clear & sharp treble. It comes with an HD cable so the picture quality/sound quality from the DVD player is superb. All the speaker cables are colour coded so you cant go wrong setting it up. Thankfully the blue LED's can be dimmed so as not to draw your eye away from what your watching-It does flash up new chapters everytime it passes over them.
However if you want to connect your TV to the unit you will have to buy your own leads, either optical or wired.
The coolong fan can be distracting when your in a quite moment of a film, its not loud but is audiable.
It did take me a while to get the unit programmed to my TV hand control, common functions are taken care of, but you will still need to use the units control to move from DVD>Aux to pick up the sound from your TV.
I cant find any sort of equilizer built in, so i have to settle for the sound options from the TV
Overall the sound quality is fantastic, but i'm not sure if its worth the money.
I'm stuck on the star rating:- sound quality would get 5* but the system is let down buy the cooling fan, the size of the DVD palyer, the cheap looking blue LED's and for this sort of money i would have expected and optical cable or at least the wired connections to play your TV throught the system.
My wife has just called me to say 'The TV is making a weired noise' 'Turn off the DVD player, its the cooling fan!'
