PDF Converter 4 did not work

I had previously installed pdf covertor 2 on my computer two years ago and it worked well. However, pdf Converter 4 would not work on my desktop from installation and although Nuance technical help were quick to respond via e-mail, the final advice included uninstalling the software and deleting registry files. I am not happy to do this and have asked for a refund.

Not impressed

Not impressed. It might be good if it integrated properly with Word, but the integration to MS Word is hopeless, and messes up the toolbars and menus. On my copy of Word when I go to View, Toolbars, there is a list of about fifty PDF create toolbars.

Nuance is aware of the problem - the fix is to take away the integration with Word, which they note, will prevent any bookmarks, comments and hyperlinks being copied into the resulting PDF documents - hopeless!

And if it isn't integrated, you might as well install Open Office for free and it will convert Word documents to PDF.

Problems with Installation of Ink Saver 2

Once installed it is an excellent package and definitely saves 25% ink with no noticeable reduction in quality. I had Ink Saver 1 with an old printer but the new printer was not recognised by the first edition.

On installing it requests that the software is registered. The user name and serial number on the instructions were entered exactly as shown and as requested but the registration code is not recognised - it becomes a trial version for 15 days. I contacted Inksaver direct, completed their on line registration form and then completed a lost registration request. A new registration code and username was sent to me and this allowed the software to be registered for permanent use.

A second copy from Amazon had the same problem.

No benefit to upgrade

Other than an Office 2007 feel about it, strip away the eye candy and there's little new. Save you money and keep the 2002, or even earlier versions.

RIP OFF

They sell this in the US for roughly the same figure BUT in dollars! (Go to amazon.com or the adobe American site).That means that we Europeans are expected to pay a little under double the money the Americans pay. How come?

Painter X is great

Painter X is a fantastic upgrade from painter IX. The only problem is using the line tool outside of an image which crashes it.
Otherwise the ability to turn the canvas and draw as you would do on paper is something truly fantastic. Problems with brush lag etc are removed if
your not working on massive file sizes. I use this program everyday as a professional concept artist and have since stopped drawing on paper.

It really is very good, especially if you take time and discover the brush settings and parameters that can be changed to make it work for you.
Combine this with photoshop CS and you really can do anything. BTW if Photoshop could spin the canvas then it would be the winner of the two by miles.

worthwhile upgrade for MAc users

CS3 is blazingly fast compared with CS2 even on a relatively modest Intel Mac. So far it is rock solid, with none of the problems users are reporting on Windows - Adobe seems to have worked hard on getting it right for the Mac customer base. New features are fairly modest as far as straight forward photography is concerned, but even so it is a worthwhile upgrade.

You get what you pay for

Extremely slow and not very good if you are priting larger image files. I bought this for office use as an experiment but unfortunately it was a waste of money. Alot of time has been spend messing about with print settings to try and get it to work rather than print out a blank pages.

I will stick to Adobe Acrobat in future although it may be okay for home use i.e. word documents etc.

Fugawi UK - Version 4

This package contains the standard ordanance survey maps and covers a good area for the price but it crashed several times when I used it with Vista and I failed to get any response when I contacted Fugawi customer service.

Absolutely brilliant!

Adobe really is the de facto standard for professionals, and with good reasons. I have been using their software for years and it just gets better with every new release. Sure, it's expensive and sure, it has a steep learning curve for many, but it simply is the best suite of software for creative work available.

Just for the record, installation for me was flawless on vista 64-bit. Also, Adobe provided my key within a matter of hours of me sending off my proof of enrolment to them. What a great service!

An excellent collection of images

This is undoubtedly a fantastic collection of clip art and graphics - hundreds of thousands of images in dozens of categories and mostly of a very high quality indeed. As this review is intended to assist other potential buyers, I'll just list the most important points.
1. Every one of the 800,000 images is in the box - no need to download any - and spread across 34 CDs. (Fewer DVDs would have been nice, but I guess not everyone has a DVD drive). However, the collection comes with a 2000-page electronic catalogue on one of the discs, containing of all the clip art in the set, making it easy both to browse for a suitable image and to find the appropriate CD quickly.
2. The collection comprises:
Almost 200,000"vector" images, mostly in colour, in Windows Metafile (WMF) format. These can be resized with no loss of quality.
Over 35,000"raster" images, as 300-DPI TIF files and mostly in colour. These cannot be scaled in the same way as vector images, but can be edited using programs such as Adobe Photoshop.
Over 1,000 works of fine art in TIF format.
About 50,000 classic images from the Dover art library, all in black & white and provided in TIF format.
Over 20,000 traditional images, all in black & white and TIF format.
Over 110,000 colour photographs, as 24-bit 72-DPI jpg files.
Over 11,000 backgrounds, also as 24-bit 72-DPI jpg files, that can be placed behind text.
Some 15,000 high-resolution (240 DPI) colour photographs.
More than 5000 vector-based technical symbols, designed to be used in drawing and CAD applications such as CorelDraw.
Web graphics - buttons, bullets, banners, animated gifs - designed to be used on web pages.
About 1,000 photo clip art images - photographic images in JPG format on a white background so they can be used as clip art.
3. The images are divided into over 500 topics and sub-topics (in corresponding folders), making it easier to find exactly what you're looking for.
And my own impressions:
Most of the images in this collection are of a very high quality indeed, although I do find the photographs rather uninspired and of a poorer quality - a bit like looking through someone's holiday snapshots. Some of the CDs appear not to have been pressed too well, as my CD drives have trouble in reading them (but always do eventually). (If you have about 20GB of available hard disk space then you can copy the entire collection to disk for quicker and easier access). The wallets the CDs come in are made of card, and it's difficult to get the CDs out without scratching them - I would recommend buying a proper CD storage wallet to keep them in good condition. The topics are very much geared towards the American user, with many being subdivided into"United States" and"Rest of World", but that's just a minor gripe.
In summary, an excellent collection of images and definitely worth the money - if you need clip art, this is the only package you'll need.
