PANTS!

This is the third Morphy Richards light up water filter kettle we have had in the last couple of years.

I bought one when they 1st came out, it was the previous design and it looked so cool, i was thrilled!
But....
It started leaking from the on/off switch after 6 months, so we phoned Morphy Richards who were very pleasant to deal with, and sent a replacement straight away (of the same model) we received it the same week!

6 months later and it sometimes wouldn't switch on as well as again leaking, this time from the plastic/metal seam, on closer inspection we noticed that the element had actually started to burn through the bottom!

So back on the phone to Morphy Richard's, who again were very nice and assured us we would get a replacement, after a couple of months and several phone calls, we did get the next model up, the one shown.
It is extremely heavy, even without water, my mother whom is disabled cant lift it, it is very slow filtering the water, and again after a few months, it has began leaking boiling water, this time when you lift and pour it, at first I thought it might be me not waiting for the water to filter, but even if you havent just put the water in, it still leaks, and it is getting worse.
It is such a shame as I am now looking for another kettle, hopefully one that lights up, as it really brightens the kitchen up at night, but I dont think i will be buying Morphy Richards again.

JK164 filter kettle

I had read some reviews saying that you can't taste the difference and the lid is stiff and is slow to boil. All I can say is I live in a very hard water area in the south of the uk and my coffee wasn't scummy, I didn't have those rings around my mug when you leave a bit of coffee in it, and best of all my teeth didn't have that film over them. Ok I've only just got it, but I'm very impressed, it also only took about a minute to boil instead of the usual 3 or more. The lid is a release button, which may wear, but I got the extra insurance for a tenner for 3 years which replaces it anyway if it breaks.

Nigella Lawson Milk /Cream Jug

I ordered this little milk/cream jug , as I wanted it to go with a duck egg blue, glass dome cake cover from Nigella's Living Kitchen Range.
It is just perfect for the job. The delightful design has no handle,but feels so good and cosy to pick it up with its smooth comforting ceramic surface. I am going to buy the matching sugar bowl and teapot now, as I really like it. The price was surprisingly inexpensive!

Excellent value

Good points - simple design, boils quickly but not too loud, and does not drip when you pour.
Not so good points - when you're filling the kettle, your hand obscures the gauge so you can't tell how much water you have put in, but after a couple of goes you get to know when you have reached the max, and in the daylight it is hard to tell if you have switched it on as the power light is rather dim.
Overall the good points outway the not so good.

I like it!

After having blown up my last kettle I decided I would need a quick replacement whilst I thought of what to get next. So far I feel no need to get another.
The flip up top is genuinely useful for ease of filling.
The kettle lifts off and replaces on the base very easily.
The on/off switch is smooth in action and has a light incorporated in it so you know when its on.
Importantly, the water heats up pretty quickly and the kettle is fairly quiet too.
For the price you can’t really go wrong.

the leaking kettle

looks nice, had mine 2years, it has constantly leaked from the bottom somewhere. i have had enough of work surface being wet when making a cuppa. so i am looking to replace.

So far so good

I think this kettle is great. It looks good, boils water quickly and is very very comfortable to use - even when full. Yes, it is a little pricey but you gets what ye pay for.

Yes, I don't doubt there are other kettles that are quieter, can hold more water, boil faster and are cheaper but this is simply the best kettle I've used. Ever. Period.

Life is too short to buy second best.

Faulty

Not a bad kettle for the money (you get what you pay for I suppose), but this kettle stopped working within a month - the power button became stuck and wouldn't work at all. Design fault or one off? Risk it if you want - I got a different kettle next time.
Incidentally Amazon allowed me to print off a returns label so posting it back was free and they refunded my account with an apology - happy with the service.

Outdated, new ones not as good as the old ones

A design classic? Yes - but obsolete and so it should be too!

Why would you buy it?
* Classic design
* It looks like the kettle your mum had
* It pours well

Why not?
* Element design means you have to have at least 1 pint / 0.5 litre of water in it, otherwise the element will overheat - not energy efficient like a flat base design
* Takes longer to boil than newer designs, partly because you have to put more water in it
* Water level gauge leaks!
* Difficult to de-scale (in hard water areas)
* Lead is prone to breaking at the kettle plug
* Built in China model is not as good as a made in UK one!

Summary:
Don't buy one of these. Buy a modern jug style with a flat base element. That way you can boil just a cup full if you need it and save energy, it will heat up faster and be easier to clean. A design classic that should be consigned to a museum.

Good looking but attracts terrrible scale

Looked great when it arrived but is hard to keep clean and is terrible for attracting scale. Boils fast. It is annoying that it is not easier to fill from the spout.

A bit slow on 110v

Didn't buy this through Amazon, but own the same model purchased elsewhere. We used this in Canada on 110v and it took what seemed like 20 mins to boil a full kettle of water. Tried it at home on 240v and it took a couple of minutes. Fine if you want to use this in UK/Europe. Fine also as a backup option or to make the occasional cup of tea on 110v. Think again if you are planning to use this for more heavy usage in North America.

Funny taste

we also bought this kettle for the design and found that the water tasted distinctly funny - chemical and so strongly that it was undrinkable. Took it back. I don't know what is leaking into the water from the product but it is definitely something and doubtless something harmful.
Would advise strongly not to buy. We took ours back.
