a fantastic investment
I bought this lens shortly after purchasing a canon a620 to give me extra range and the 1.7x magnification does make a real difference! The photo's which come out are clear and of exactly the same condition as on the regular 4x zoom, perfect for getting that bit closer to birds etc. I have since upgraded to a canon s2 and have found it to be of less use - at 12x zoom + the adaptor, the contrast in the pictures is too stong. However, in general, I would say that the canon lenses in the cameras themselves are excellent and within the 1-4x zoom range, this extra lens is a fantastic investment. Just make sure you get the right adaptor for it to fit your camera!!23

The focus can be set to 3m to infinity or 1.2m to infinity. The shorter length is very good for close ups of flowers or similar. If its left on 1.2m it may hunt when trying to focus. You can also set to manual focus.
One issue with the lens is back focus, if you are shooting at something when there is a bright, or high-contrast background, you may find the camera has focussed on the background.
I use my 70-200 f4 on an EOS20D, I have taken thousands of shots with that combination, photogrphing; cricket, riding, birds, flowers, people, aircraft and stars. Other than the minor issue of back focus, I have had trouble free shooting. The lens is well worth getting.

Superb lens
The ef 70-200/f4 is a fabulous lens. It’s very sharp, has good depth of field at f4 and is a joy to use.The focus can be set to 3m to infinity or 1.2m to infinity. Great perspective
On standard 35mm SLR cameras this lens is an ultra-wide, which occasionally has its uses. But to my mind the 17-40 f4 really comes into its own when used with the EOS10D, which has a 1.6 magnification when compared to 35mm SLRs. Used on the EOS10D the 17-40 f4 provides a perspective comparable to that of a 27mm lens on 35mm format. In some ways it seems absurd to be noticing a single extra millimetere in the angle of view compared to that of a 28mm lens on 35mm; but the 17-40 offers a truly fabulous perspective when used for street scenes at the wide end and I'm totally impressed with it. I'd also like to be able to speak highly of it's ultrawide, flat field, resolution when used with a standard 35mm SLR but since buying the EOS10D I've only shot three rolls of film, none of them on the 17-40: film suddenly seems so old fashioned.25

Not very good.
I purchased a Canon A80 but also required the wide angle lens. This requires an adaptor but weirdly enough when I used it in conjunction with the wide angle lens (both supplied by Canon), the adaptor is not sufficiently long enough to allow the natural movement of the inbuilt lens on the camera ! Solution - use the Canon adaptor and a Raynox 72mm 0.66x wide angle lens. But beware, using the wide angle on flash will cause you a darkening of the right hand corner of the image (the lens gets in the way a bit!)32

It seems like Sony designed the camera then thought - oh wouldn't it be good if....Tacky after thought, works perfectly well, but a tacky after though all the same. Second reason - it blocks off the built it flash slightly. You get a slight shadow in the bottom left of the photo.
Should both these reasons but you off. I would say not. As long as you aware of the issues, they are easily over come i.e if in a dark situation try to get as much light in the left hand side of the photo etc.
I would say that it is definitely worth the money, and could one day save your life, in that group shot near the edge of a cliff.....

Take a step back
Taking a step back isn't always possible (or safe for that matter, if you near the edge of a cliff). But this little beauty it opens up a whole new world. With its optics designed to give you 30% extra field view in every photo, it is now possible to get everyone in that group shot, near the edge of that cliff.So why only 4 stars? Couple of reasons. First one being the lense adapter for the camera. The wide angle lens allows one to get much closer as well which is really useful indoors or for my purposes of a training dvd.
The quality is superb. It's a weighty lens but that's the quality. The thread is perfect. I've seen another review ranting on about the threads on the sony products camera to lens, it's rubbish. One can't be rough with it but with such fine equipment it can't be treated without care and respect.

brilliant lens - will make a huge difference
I owned a canon camera and had a wide angle on that for my filming of Tai Chi. I found it invaluable. I upgraded to a Sony HDR-SR10 and found the wide screen most useful. However, once I put the wide angle lens on, it really opened up laterally. I found this really useful when alone and the camera is mounted on a tripod, unmanned. It could be my imagination but it seems to me that the combination of the wide screen format of the sony camera coupled with this wide angle lens, brings more panoramic width than my older combination.The wide angle lens allows one to get much closer as well which is really useful indoors or for my purposes of a training dvd.

Superb prime lens
I have owned this lens for 12 months now and take it with me when I'm photographing every time.I use it mainly for portrait shots, which gives ultra sharp shot of the subject and good background blur behind the subject with vibrant colours. This lens is as good as it gets without having the 'L' standard, but remarkably as good.
Every wedding/portrait photographer who owns a Canon camera should have this lens in his or her arsenal.
