Somewhat surprised to find that apart from the SATA cable connection all the other connections have to be made to existing external USB/Firewire points, WHY?, there are spare internal USB connections, but not with the standard"plug" Unless there is a technical reason it is a bad design which wastes two external USB's Also the instruction manual has a lot to be desired. What should have taken a few minutes to install ended up taking a couple of hours by the time I realised that if you did not plug the unit into an external USB point there was no power.

Won't read 1gb SD card from Canon A720is, although card reads fine when camera is plugged into PC. LED on reader comes on ok, but when clicking on removable drive icon in 'my computer' I get message 'insert removeable media' - ie card is not detected. Googled the problem - not uncommon, not found solution yet.106

NOT as good as it seems. stay clear
I wanted a good all round cheap card reader so I opted for the G-Tech 19-in-1 memory Card Reader/Writer. UNFORTUNATELY Not plug a play as tried it in 7 different pcs with differnt usb chip sets and 4 different o/S. = Win xp pro, 2000 pro, win me , linux edubuntu. (also tried some tricks of the trade) BUT All the same yellow exclaimation marks in the device manager. All my other usb devices work ok, so this item has major driver problems/issues/incompatibilities. The actual item looks realy nice and would be great if it worked. It comes with no instructions or drivers just a USB lead and the card reader itself.Apparently the manufacturers china/japanese website have drivers for win98 but all other o/s after 98 = Plug and pray! Company not terifically helpful like returning calls but did send out a quick replacement which did exactly the same and an envelope to return the faulty suspect one. As yet waiting for a refund but to no avail as they say they have not recieved it yet ( about 10 days so far????)My opinion is I am staying clear of this brand and may opt for a renowned brand or more likely a PCMCIA reader for the laptop.You have been warned

It is discreetly sized and because it's powered from the USB socket, there's no seperate power supply to cart around. It's fairly light, so would need to be secured in a permanent position with something like a sticky fixer (not included). However it's well built from good quality materials and has rubber feet to help stop it sliding about. I get excellent transfer rates with my 40x CF card: I transferred about 400Mb of images in around 8 minutes using USB 2.0
On the down side, there is no integrated cable storage, so you have to carry that seperately. Also, there are no covers for the slots so dust/dirt/sand/small animals etc could get lodged inside during transportation.
One other thing to be careful of is that you don't remove memory cards while the in-use light is lit or flashing as this can corrupt the cards. This applies to all card readers and is not a fault of this product.
This is definetly a worthwhile device, think about it - if you buy another camera in a couple of years time, you probably won't need to buy a new reader.

It's a card reader. It reads cards.
It does what it promises.For some cards it's nice and easy - for others you need to place them correctly.
Overall, it's a very useful device that I use over and over, due to having purchased devices with every bl00dy combination of media.
Buy smart and you won't need it.
Buy the best, media no issue, and this will help make your life much easier.
