Nothing is perfect...

except for two flaws...everything else is perfect for my needs.
1. the fonts cannot be switched to larger ones.
2. the headphone connector and the flap to cover it...connector should have better designed especially being a sports phone - can easily break and unhooked. The flap is cheap! Audio/Speaker is great!

Not quite a great smartphone, especially if you use Macs

First impressions of the phone were highly disappointing. Within a couple of days I was pretty much wishing I could ditch the thing. Firstly there was this `combination' of screen and keypad usage that is just not intuitive. But what is intuition other than that based on some element of previous expectation? For example, to answer, mute or end a call, you do not use the hard keys, you press 'sensor' buttons on the touchscreen. Then there was the Mac iSync debacle. Oh yes, a half-hearted attempt at allowing Apples to sync with the phone results in no Task syncing or Notes syncing. So evidently this is a WINDOWS phone. Another initial niggle was the way the calendar does not show a nice `week view' that you can get a quick glance at with vertical days. Its more like a grid view of a week, which isn't ideal to see free slots.

Anyway, as time went on, I began to explore the phone more and here is the result from Luxemborg...

Jog Dial : this has made a welcome return to the P-range, and its almost back to its best. Fabulous. Very useful to quickly navigate the various menus.

Keyboard : this continues to be the WORST part of the phone, its just not quick to use. Sure some people will be able to hit the right side of the rocker switch. But I find that I am hitting neighbouring keys which slows down typing.

SMS : pretty much the same as it was on other UIQ3 phones. The only snag is no t9! Yep, you have to use the QWERTY rocker-switches for everything. urgh.

EMAIL : Ok, so this is getting better. Download from any POP server, download just headers, or download emails smaller than a configurable size. Additionally, the scheduled download of emails is back, so you can grab mails at set `intervals' alas not at specific times. Its easy to read and compose, but I do wish it 'saves' emails frequently - just get a call and sometimes it all vanishes :(

WEB : This is getting better. Based on Opera it has configurable cache, and screen behaviour. The bookmarking is OK, allowing for folders, but you cannot delete the silly pre-set bookmarks. Options to not download images is there, to save on GPRS tariffs.

CALENDAR : The key to a smartphone, and the P1i's weakest feature. Firstly, as the earlier gripe suggests, no easy week-vertical view, as pre in outlook. Secondly, get yourself some meetings and you better remember to silence your phone. Unlike windows smartphones, it does not automatically adjust your profile based on appointments. So you could have your embarrassing ringtone go off in the middle of a key meeting. So its not THAT smart.

TASKS : Oh my, what a disaster. If you want to use your phone to help you Get Things Done, forget it. Go get a Palm or a Treo, this device does not let you manage tasks flexibly. Firstly you have no chance of doing this on a non Windows platform, and secondly you might as well drive from Outlook and not the P1i when you are on Windows. A real disappointment. Priorities, due by, overdue, are all there but in a very odd and unusable manner.

EASY VIEW : there is a easy view of the key events on the home screen of the phone. But it doesnt really shrink its font small enough to see the right things on the screen at once. So, its about 70% usable, but a nice touch. Not as good as the new Windows VARIO smartphones though.

UIQ3 : the key to the phone is its OS - based on Symbian UIQ3. Not the fastest OS on the planet, menu launches and application launches take some time. Does this affect usability? Well in a tight business day, not a great thing.

Conclusion: its not great, but it is an improvement on the P900i. The iPhone remains the device of choice for now.

A good phone for a cheap price

When I first got this phone. I was pleased with my choice. It looked cool and it was even cooler when I switched it on. On it,it has:

A load of great games including - Snake 2, Pinball with a choice of 2 different tables, Space Impact, Muniki and 4 in a row.

Quite a few screensavers including pictures of - flowers, football, pandas, the beach e.t.c and also some animated ones of - your name which flies around the screen, an umbrella e.t.c

Many ringtones featuring some such as - merry Christmas, Barn Dance e.t.c

THe phone is easy to use and provides something to do when you are on a train. I would recommend this phone above all others.

Want a brill phone with EVERY possible gadget, (except 3G), then buy this phone NOW! Excellent camera (1.3Mp), 32Mg memeory card with expandable memory, viseo capture and playback, superb audio, the list goes on. Okay, so it's not a pretty flip or slide phone but it does the job better. You won't be sorry you bought it!

Good Phone, lousy PC Suite

I can confirm the previous posters comments'; the phone is great for those of us who want a basic business phone with good battery life. I would recommend it for that. But the PC suite does not work; I have spent an age loading and reloading the software but can not get my PC to recognise the phone. The PC suite was not much good on my previous phone but this one is even worse, so much for progress!
If you want a good, basic phone buy it. If you want to sort and synchronise your contacts and calendars then look elsewhere.

I went back to this after an upgrade

I am so glad I hadn't sold my D900 when I got an upgrade as the phone I got was nowhere near as good as this. I agree about the shutter delay on the camera and the nine buttons to send a text but that is all I think is iffy about it. I found a lovely case on ebay and an adapter that lets you use ordinary earphones for music listening. I am delighted with this phone. If Samsung did something about the amount of buttons to send the text they would have a real winner.

Looks good...that's all

This phone looks great...but since buying it have had problems with texting (friends receiving incomplete texts, I am getting replies sent hours before I actually receive them on my phone) cannot get the mp3 player to work, screen freezing. Then a colleague at work admitted she had also given up on her LG phone and got herself a Nokia. I would not recommend an LG phone to anyone.

wow

Just got my phone today ( a suprise from my partner) and im well pleased. However it started badly, getting the back cover of was really hard, was afraid i was going to crack the screen, once that was done though it was full steam ahead. I have had a few walkman phones, and found them easy to use, this one is a little more complex, but as usual with sony easy to pick up, the stylis built into the side is a nice touch, although a metal one may have been better, the screen is excellent as is the camera, and the sound quality is most impressife, the built in radio will auto tune which is useful. as far as i can see all in all an excellent product. cant wait to carry on using it,

A good business mobile

A good allround phone for the business and personal user alike. Ive had 3 of these now, as key pads are prone to sticking, and unlike other Nokia's this phone is not possible to take apart to clean/replace the key pad. Easy to use functions in typical Nokia style, no camera.

Good

This phone is a phone, it doesn't have 3g, which, having had a Nokia SmartPhone for the last few years, is brilliant. It doesn't always try to connect even if you've told it not to, it doesn't crash as it does not try to carry out too many things with not enough memory. It's a phone with limited features, which make it a good phone. Also... look at it! As far as phones go, it looks pretty damn good
