Sunglass requiried,
You really need sunglasses to use this monitor, or turn down the brightness to such an extent the contrast suffers badly. It's got lots of adjustments, but no backlight control.Probably good if you watch movies or play games (get a wide screen), but no go for word processing or web browsing.
Look elsewhere.

Physically, the unit is very appealing with a slimline and unfussy frame design. It includes a simple stand that keeps it securely stable and there are a VESA standard screw holes on the back if you want to fit it to some sort of wall bracket.
The brightness of the screen is uniform and strong with no dark areas in the corners like some cheap models. The colour reproduction is good and produces sharp, clear images. Motion is handled well with no noticeable blurring.
I have tried this model on: Movie play back, World of Warcraft, Car Racing games, First Person Shooter games as well as regular desktop stuff like word processing, photo editing and internet browsing. All without any problems.
I have not tried the sound, but I would never use inbuilt monitor speakers. Get a good set of headphones or proper surround speakers instead.
To Sum up: You'd need more money than sense to buy an expensive monitor when you can get a cheap monitor as nice as this.

Good quality monitor, Cheap price
I've had this model monitor now for a little over 3 months and I am very pleased with it.Physically, the unit is very appealing with a slimline and unfussy frame design. What a difference a day made - one day I had an old, bulky CRT screen and the next a fantastic, snazzy, streamlined widescreen LCD wonder! I thought it was all hype about LCD screens - how wrong I was. I really wish I'd gotten one sooner.
I would definitely recommend this Acer to anyone even remotely considering it!

SM206BW and a Macbook
Hi - went and played with one of these SM206BW 20" monitors in John Lewis today. Got the guys there to plug it into a Macbook - have to say it looked fantastic - text was crip - colour was clear and rich. We tried the max resolution and that was best - no sign of any blur on text at all.I am puzzled by the discussions about the different versions of the panel (a-s-c) which is rather off putting -

this monitor is my 2nd purchase of these as i love the quality of the 1st one i brought.that was 5yrs ago and still going good,brill picture and the screen isnt too soft to the touch as little fingers like to touch my screen.[if the tv screen is anything to go by].so its finger proof,great picture,easy to adjust eg;brightness etc.33

We purchased (from ISBUY Ltd) the PL8508 this week (23/04/08)and it arrived within 2 days.
The set is for use in our small camper van (Citreon Relay SWB). The programmes for the set will come via satellite dish (Astra 2D Free to Air.)and set top box.
We are pleased with the performance it delivers (picture and audio) when connected to Satellite dish
Within 2 hours I had the set working via terestrial aerial and Satdish/set top box.
For terestrial via standard lead to loft aerial. The lead connects to the set using Antenna transfer cable which is suplied with set.
For the set top box via audio/video phono lead (red, white and yellow) lead which connect to the MMI cable (AV)which is provided with the set.
The Users manual is poor( something lost in translation) but once you have tuned in one set it is roughly the same procedure.
I did all tuning with the remote control.
So to finish we are pleased with what we have seen so far. Its reliability and durabilty are yet to be established hence only giving it 3 Stars.

quality monitor for hdmi support.
bought this for use with ps3 and it works a charm. the speakers aren't particularly impressive but i use a seperate sound system. supports 1080 hd resolution with HDMI input and VGA its perfect for both a computer and the ps3. swift delivery too.nuff said.35

Great for gaming & watching movies in these proportions though & I'm sure I'll get it how I want it once I've got past these first few days of playing with it, 5 stars from me no problem.
A while on now, sorted out my resolutions 1440 x 900 works great so it's all good in that regard but one thing has become apparent that the viewing angle isn't so good, with that my Sony HDTV wins, If you look at the screen from slight to sharp viewing angles it can give lighter or darker area's, nothing major really but like to be thorough.

Nice monitor, a worthy purchase
bought 1 of these to replace my 19" Sony monitors. Look great, hdmi connection with a seperate sound port too, something lacking on my Sony hdtv, using these at work for design work they give you a 20% stretch on how the image actually looks so a circle looks like an oval unless you switch to native 1920 x 1200 which sorts that out but text in emails & icons are tiny then, I'm still undecided using them for that but probably my ignorance on how to set it up doesn't help, if you keep aspect ratio the screen works out only 20mm taller than my old Sony ones. Warnings about dead pixels on these monitors from sellers, out of 3 monitors I have 1 dead pixel on 1 of the monitors which you really only see when the screen is black.Great for gaming & watching movies in these proportions though & I'm sure I'll get it how I want it once I've got past these first few days of playing with it, 5 stars from me no problem.

Got mine from a competitor but reviewing here, excellent monitor cant fault it in anyway, price, picture - superb!PS, Dont load the drivers - XP does it all for you.
