Review for Panasonic D29EB-S CD Radio Cassette Player:
Disappointing radio
I chose this top-end model hoping for exceptional performance. The FM radio reception was very poor even when switched to mono - much inferior to a cheap portable radio (showing that the signal strength was good enough). The sound quality playing CDs was reasonably good.108

Review for Roberts RD 14 Personal Stereo:
Firstly price, it is cheaper than the Sony and about the same price as the Pure. Secondly the reception is brilliant even on trains and buses. Thirdly the sound quality is fantastic. Finally it is a little kinder on batteries than most (though beware if you buy a pocket sized DAB radio they are hungry little devils).
Small criticisms would be the finish, it is made of plastic and first impressions may be slightly negative.
That aside this is a great radio I encourage you to buy it.

Awesome
I spent an enormous amount of time researching pocket sized DAB radios and having tried and tested the current Sony and Pure I can confidently say the Roberts RD-14 is the best around.Firstly price, it is cheaper than the Sony and about the same price as the Pure. Brilliant for High Frequency Hearing Loss
Like many with a proudly misspent youth plus a few genetic factors and in my early 50s, I suffer from high frequency hearing loss, meaning that I have to wear digital hearing aids (I find the clunky NHS ones are by far the best, having tried 2 private in-ear ones. The clunkyness is actually good - shows people you've got a problem, so they speak more clearly). When I listen to the radio in bed, however, this is a real problem, because I can't wear the hearing aids when I expect to fall asleep, and yet, without their use, I have to have the radio turned up high and it sounds fuzzy because I get too much bass even with the radio's trebble turned on. The high volume also sometimes disturbs my wife, even though I'm listening through headphones. In addition, as someone who used to love and play music, I've virtually given up on it except with hearing aids in as I miss so much. For several years I've therefore been trying to find an in-line graphic equaliser, and finally I hit on this product. It arrived this morning, and it is amazing. It restores both voice and music so that I can hear them clearly without my hearing aids, and allows me to listen at lower volume (thereby not trashing what remains of my hearing capability). It is lightweight and has a good contoured feel - the only design improvement I'd suggest would be to have a wee LED to show when it's been left turned on. I find it works best for me with the bass turned right down (the opposite to teenage years!) and the medium tones boosted for speech, or the trebble tones for music. I can even make the words out in some of the songs now! It brings the brightness back to music. Amnazing! If I were the manufacturers, I'd be promoting this specially to people who need hearing aids for high frequency hearing loss - there's plenty of us around these days. What this gizmo demonstrates is that it's not our hearing that's wrong ... it's the way the world's pitched (ho hum - wink!).Alastair McIntosh
