Buyer Beware!

I ordered this portable TV for use in the car to replace our old hand held TV. It was delivered promptly and looks great.
It was tested on our aerial at home as per the instructions and worked perfectly. However, neither the TV or radio worked with either of the two supplied aerials when tested in the car.
The supplier has advised that it needs to be connected to a main aerial but appears to overlook the fact that it was advertised as PORTABLE.
I will now be charged to return the item and for the postage, despite it being initially posted for free. It is a complete disappointment, especially as the old TV works beautifully in the car.

Budget DVB recorder

What a terrific piece of kit. As small as its 7" screen permits, it has a top access, full size aerial connector & SD card slot. On the left side the earphone & AV sockets are colour coded and easilly accessed. Six buttons on the front panel allow access to common controls, the large, slim RC deals with the rest. Underneath is a standard tripod bush and a USB socket which not only allows updates but can accomodate a flash drive for recordings instead of the SD card.

The screen is wide and very crisp, one of the best I've seen and with the ability to show photos, MP4 films, watch and record analogue or digital TV as well as MP3 compatibility this sleek, matt black TV must rank as one of the very best.

It is designed to work at high speed in cars, holds onto a signal like a limpet and has a"kick" stand which holds the set at the perfect viewing angle. I have not used the internal lithium-ion battery yet but note that it is replaceable and adds no extra bulk.

One last plus point, at least in my eyes, the front is devoid of manufacturers labels and printing.

hy can't Archos, Sony et al make kit as tasty as this?

review of player and ancilleries

aspects of this package are very good, however this is coupled with some very poor parts.

DVD playback - the playback is good, relatively smooth and quiet. it plays well and even managed a scratched dvd my older player struggles with. it does play region 1 and 2 and dvdr's.

Tv reciever - the analogue one is basic and as you would expect. the digital part is quite good, picks up the channels you would expect and managed to locate a few my upstairs set top box couldnt. very pleased with this part though it has to be said the travel aerial is useless and you need to invest in a powered aerial to have some hope of finding channels. I have not tried it in a car but i doubt this would make a difference

Games - the games are basically a selection of old NES (first gen nintendo system) games. Whilst im not planning on replacing my 360 for it it is fun to see the old mario games and similar. i havent had chance to play them all but have no doubt there are easily 300 games. the downside is the controller, it is the cheapest bit of kit i have seen in ages. it broke nearly instantly and id predict any replacement would also break as they are so badly made. im hoping my 360 controller will work (as they are both usb interfaces)

screen - the screen is as it looks and gives a good picture from most angles, the colour is a little poor specifically red/yellow aspects. the adjustments do little to affect this colour and people tend to have a strong yellow/red look. This does let the unit down compared to similar models.

Sound - speakers are fine and produce a loud enough output. they are no worse than other systems i have seen and the earphones are a preffered was of listening to the player.

Other - i havent used any of the card/usb readers so cant comment on how they work, the remote is also ok though not laid out in the most logical manner. the battery is externally mounted and as yet havent used it so cant comment on its life.

build quality - the overall feel of the items are clunky but sturdy. apart from the cheap (and i cant stress that enough) games controller it feels ike it would work.

overall - i only rate this a 3 as the bits that i was interest in (dvd and tv aspect) work well (even through the screen is a little poor). other aspects were a bonus. if you are after a portable system that does everything that is below standard price then this system does the job.

Handy Gadget

Satisfied with the picture quality and battery consumption, but the sound quality from the tiny speaker is very tinny and irritating. Remote control changes channel only, not volume.

I Have Seen The Light via LCD TV

This is a non technical review on what my wife and saw at home. We are both pleased as we think it represents value for money.
We purchased (from ISBUY Ltd) the PL8508 this week (23/04/08)and it arrived within 2 days.
The set is for use in our small camper van (Citreon Relay SWB). The programmes for the set will come via satellite dish (Astra 2D Free to Air.)and set top box.
We are pleased with the performance it delivers (picture and audio) when connected to Satellite dish
Within 2 hours I had the set working via terestrial aerial and Satdish/set top box.
For terestrial via standard lead to loft aerial. The lead connects to the set using Antenna transfer cable which is suplied with set.

For the set top box via audio/video phono lead (red, white and yellow) lead which connect to the MMI cable (AV)which is provided with the set.

The Users manual is poor( something lost in translation) but once you have tuned in one set it is roughly the same procedure.
I did all tuning with the remote control.

So to finish we are pleased with what we have seen so far. Its reliability and durabilty are yet to be established hence only giving it 3 Stars.
